But the starting claim had NOTHING to do with Birkeland currents, which are field aligned, they had to do with current sheets between two regions of oppositely directed magnetic field, and those currents are perpendicular to the magnetic field.

And then we get some stuff from Scott quoted, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with what is being discussed. Indeed, a force free field, with a field aligned current, will "wind up" the magnetic field like a screw.
