Under section 122 of the constitution, the parliament may "allow the representation of such* territory in either House of the Parliament to the extent and on the terms which it thinks fit".
* Section 122 also refers to territory as "any territory surrendered by any State to and accepted by the Commonwealth, or of any territory placed by the Queen under the authority of and accepted by the Commonwealth". Note that the constitution doesn't require all territories to be treated equally. For example, Christmas Island and Norfolk Island are Australian territories but neither has any representation in parliament. |

ftfy (or rather, ftfdlm )
Just to continue your education, only the six "original" states are guaranteed equal representation in the Senate. The representation of any new state is subject to the whim of parliament. For example, if the Northern Territory became a state then it would almost certainly not have 12 Senators and 5 MHRs because of its lack of population.

It's not purely academic. There is talk of making the Northern Territory a state by 2018 (http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politi...23-giino4.html).
However, this sort of talk has been going on for a while. In 1998, Northern Territorians voted no in a statehood referendum. At that time, they would have had 3 Senators. If you compare the current populations of the Northern Territory and Tasmania then the Northern Territory would probably be entitled to 5 Senators. |

It looks like there will be more independents in the NT parliament than CLP members.

A sign of things to come?
Day three of the new parliament and Turnbull's majority government loses a vote on the floor of the House. The first time in 55 years.
And probably not the first for this governement? Apparently Labor had spotters at Canberra airport reporting back which of the more arrogant Liberals decided to shoot off early. Those included the Deputy PM, Barnaby Joyce (who made it back). |

This was absolutely hilarious. The desire of MPs to piss off early is shameful. In times when the government had a decent majority, there were MPs who intentionally (or so it seemed) broke the standing orders and were kicked out of the house during Question Time on Thursdays so they could catch an early flight home. These clowns are very well paid. They must stay until stumps.

Fixed your quote.
The spotters must have been good. Able to recognize any of the Liberal / National party MPs on sight. I predict that the Labour party will call for a division just about every Friday PM, especially the last one before a long break. Then if the Government losses, try to suspend standing orders and pass legislation that has already passed the upper house. If that happens what can the Government do? Tell the GG not to sign the legislation into law? That would be unprecedented. Labor would have to be careful, or there will be another election on this issue. |

Not a vote but three votes (divisions). Labor nearly succeeded in getting a Royal Commission into banking passed. (already passed by the Senate).
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politi...01-gr6qph.html Unprecedented or not, that is what Turnbull would probably do. The constitution gives the GG the power to declare that he withholds assent. |

It was a farce yes, but I have to admit, since returning to Oz all I've observed MPs do here is score points or when in opposition, merely block everything Regardless of their actual belief/stance on a matter.
I careen between despair and exasperation whenever I read/hear/see anything about the entire House. Both of them frankly. |

Clover Moore wins record 4th term in Sydney City Council and Mayoral elections.
Clover Moore has sent packing Mike Baird's attempt at a gerrymander to unseat her from the Sydney "Mayorship". Clover presides over a corruption free, fair and people friendly local council. The Liberals with the help of the usual media megaphones, Alan Jones etc have been having a go at Clover for years. They have been spectacularly unsuccessful. So they now have resorted to undemocratic gerrymandering giving business 2 votes to the ordinary citizen 1 vote. This has backfired and "farted" egg in the face of the Liberals. Tony Abbotts sister ran for Mayor as a Liberal and was put to the sword by Clover. In fact the Liberal party has failed spectacularly in all local council elections this weekend. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/with-clove...11-grdmqw.html And here http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/clover-moo...10-grdd8x.html |

I wonder if this was deliberate? The last sentence on an article on Labor and the Greens introducing same-sex marriage bills to parliament, in the Australian Times.
"As recently as just prior to the Federal Election in July, a poll found that 69% of voters supported a plebiscite vote on same-sex marriage as opposed to straight parliamentary vote." |

Pauline Hanson is back
Pauline Hanson wasted little time in going back on her soap box regarding Muslims:

An opinion piece in the Sydney Morning Herald suggests that it was a tactical error for the Greens to walk out on her speech:

What is serious is that such a small minded person holds a position of power in our government.

Pauline Hanson has a long history that started in 1996 when she made a similar maiden speech in parliament about Asians. That speech got her kicked out of the Howard government and the Liberal party. However, this only empowered her since she now represented a voice in parliament that supported racism.
Over the years, her stupidity saw her lose influence and her seat in parliament so you won't find anything about her prior in this thread. With Clive Palmer being exposed as a crook, racists flocked back to One Nation instead. |

The ABC's Promise Tracker, is an interesting tool.
Since the 2013 election, the Coalition has broken 24% of their election promises, 10% are stalled. 38% have been delivered as promised and the remaining 27% are in progress. Labor though, does markedly worse on their 2016 election promises than the Coalition. |
