I've actually spent way too much time watching fe vids on youtube. i find it so insane yet essentially harmless (enough) that it is fascinating.

one possibility that crossed my mind is that many of them all seem to refer to this same camera model (iirc nikon p900? something like that) which makes me wonder if somehow the manufacturer didn't start some sort of viral flat earth marketing campaign (apparently this camera is for some reason particularly great for proving that a boat didn't really disappear over the horizon/curve, but you can't use a telescope from a hot air balloon to view the entire planet...) but i couldn't find any evidence of this from a quick googling.

I think one of the reasons it is so mind-boggling is unlike most conspiracy theories, it actually encompasses EVERYONE. you are either an 'awake' flat earther, a brain-washed 'glober', or a 'globalist shill/conspirator'. It requires virtually everyone on the planet to be involved to an extent, even if involvement is just 'not questioning the dogma/religion of science/gravity'. there is also no clear motivation for the conspiracy...

there's also a guy who trolls them but as far as I can tell, part of his reason is he thinks it draws attention away from real conspiracies and that the flat earth thing is a psyop (I can't quite work out if he's being ironic, I don't think so though). He does troll them reasonably well though.
