Two weeks after the second shot! I doubt that it will ever get safer than that.
(Well, maybe when you've got your cat vaccinated, too.)

New Twitter thread from David Steadson about the current situation in Sweden

I think the cat can take his chances, as things stand at present! Sweden is not looking good. We're seeing about 10 deaths a week with a population half the size of Sweden. We have about 1250 cases per week and a new case rate of about 23 per rolling 7-day period per 100K population. And we're actually a bit worse than England. Isn't it about time Sweden woke up and smelled the coffee? Those of them who can still smell, that it...

It ought to be easier for those who can't smell to realize the insanity of the Swedish experiment. However, the problem in Sweden is that too many believed in the idea from the start, and having defended it throughout the pandemic, they think that they will look more foolish now if they admit to themselves and others that they were wrong, that they've been had, than if they continue to defend it.
They have also seen that the ones who come to their senses become outcasts. Leaving a cult is never easy, and those who remain tend to be very unforgiving.

I usually dislike the idea of trying scientists for getting the science wrong but at the end of all of this Anders Tegnell, John Edmunds, and others of their ilk, along with politicians such as Trump need to be arrested and tried for Crimes against Humanity for the dead that are so by their hand.

Saturday:
Coronavirus - countries (Worldometers, May 1, 2021)
Deaths per million (Total deaths) New cases Serious/Critical
Sweden: 1,384 (14,048) 5,926* 390 *according to SVT.se No new numbers till Tuesday, May 4.
Denmark: 428 (2,489) 617* 37 *of 173,089 tests (0.36%); Fully vacc. 650,050 (11.14% of pop.), 1st dose: 1,343,579 (23,02%).
Finland: 165 (914) 288 31
Norway: 139 (756) 289 34
Iceland: 85 (29) 6 4
Iceland has 190 active cases
, Faroe Islands 1, New Zealand 24
The Faroe Islands have 1 in quarantine, 0 hospitalized Handball team enjoys historic victory: first ever World Cup qualifier win
I guess this is one of the benefits of having been (almost) Covid-free for most of the pandemic: Sportsteams haven't had their practice interrupted by quarantines and the players don't have long-term Covid.

Engineers are held responsible when their bridges collapse due to their mistakes, but this is so much worse: doubling down and lying about it to make it go on long after it had become obvious to everybody with just a minor insight into the field how wrong they were, and at a point when it would still have been possible to save thousands of lives.
Once a bridge has collapsed, there isn't much more you can do to save anybody.

The plan is now being drawn up to open Sweden

Swedish authoritarianism and the pandemic strategy:
Quote:
Just as Trump denied, denied, denied, so did Tegnell. In November, about the time the polls were reflecting a large decline in popularity, insisted the death toll was exaggerated and was better than it looked. He told Dagens Nyheter, a local paper, “It’s not the case that we are suddenly going up from 20 deaths per day to 40, 50. That’s not how it is at all.” (Please remember Sweden’s population is much smaller than the U.S. and while their numbers seem microscopic on a per capita basis they are significant.)

Tegnell’s assertion was another falsehood from him. In fact, the Folkhälsomyndigheten, Sweden’s own public health agency reports precisely the numbers Tegnell denied. On November 16th it was 44, one day later 50, by the 24th it was 69. Tegnell doubled down saying, “We do not have a sharp increase [in deaths], rather it is an increase that we have seen since mid-October. Then we had four to five deaths a day and now we are up to about 20.” On the day he said it, the public health agency reported 50 deaths not 20. The last time Sweden had just 20 Covid deaths in a day was November 1, it remained above 20 — and often well over 20 — for the next three months.

Tegnell was called out by a journalist and became defensive and refused to say he was “wrong” even while admitting his figures were wrong. He tried to deny being wrong by saying wrong implied “trying to mislead,” but “wrong” doesn’t address motives, just results and his results were not right — in other words: they were wrong!

For the first time since January, the percentage of positive tests in Denmark was more than 0.5 today.
This scene from a bar in Copenhagen does not bode well for the very near future:
Overhaler Vestegnen (EkstraBladet, May 2, 2021)
Crowded, no face masks, a lot of shouting, and the people at the bar look to young to have been vaccinated yet. By the end of May, some of them may have had the first shot. It would have been better to postpone pub crawling till mid-June.

Since people in Copenhagen are younger than people in the rest of the country on average, it has the lowest percentage of vaccinations, and it is the region with the highest population density. A very bad combination, obviously.

That's a very good positivity figure, we've not been there since last summer, though we did get below 1% once or twice last week.

I agree with you about young people in bars, it's nuts. Wait till you're vaccinated. Too many people seem to think infections in young people have no consequences.

Denmark is about to become the world's #1 testing nation. Gibraltar doesn't need to test much anymore after it became the #1 in vaccinations.
This makes it all the more annoying that we stayed with The Hammer and the Dance and didn't go all the way for ZeroCovid. It wouldn't have required much effort to do so.

I guess this is part of Sweden's battle to protect the freedom of school children and teachers to not have mask wearing lunch ladies scare them.
They must have some really scary face masks in that country ...

Ever since Childlike Empress told us about Lukashenko's brilliant pandemic response in Belarus, I have occasionally looked at the numbers from that country, and they are indeed exceptional: Worldometer: Coronavirus: Belarus

Take a look at the graph of Covid-19 deaths, for instance: Unlike all other countries, Belarus didn't have waves! No first, second and third wave, but a smooth, regulated line of Covid-19 deaths from the very beginning. And if you look at the daily number of deaths in April, you will notice that Lukashenko must have ordered a maximum number of deaths: 10 per day! Interrupted by the occasional 9!

It seems to be a very rational way of tackling the pandemic: 10 deaths a day, so the undertakers never get overwhelmed.

Nevertheless, with 270 (official) deaths per million, the country overtook both Norway and Finland several months ago, but is still far below Denmark's 428.

Childlike Empress must be so proud of her Uncle Luka!

And yet we did lock down and we have had more deaths per capita than Sweden. There are complex variables in play here.

Locking down late after giving the virus an opportunity to spread and opening too soon is as effective as mere recommendations, in particular in a country with a population density much higher than Sweden's. That Scotland's population density isn't high doesn't help much when the borders to England are open. Currently, Sweden's even scarcer populated regions have a very high level of infections.

New poll shows: Record-low confidence in Anders Tegnell

52 percent still have confidence in him. 23 percent say that they don't.

His fans think that he is being persecuted by the media, much like the way Trump fans talked about a witch-hunt.

It is estimated that 7 percent of Danes had had the infection in March 2021:

The number of new registered cases on Tuesdays in Sweden (no numbers Saturday, Sunday, Monday) according to SVT.se:
Tuesday, Feb. 9: 8,112 - deaths 73

Tuesday, Feb. 23: 10,933 - deaths 64
Tuesday, March 2: 11,804 - deaths 56
Tuesday, March 9: 11,014 - deaths 39
Tuesday, March 16: 12,762 - deaths 26
Tuesday, March 23: 14,063 - deaths 53
Tuesday, March 30: 16,437 - deaths 28
- - - - -
Tuesday, April 6: 21,802 - deaths 35 NB. The numbers are since Thursday, April 1, not since Friday, April 2.

Tuesday, April 13: 19,105 - deaths 39
Tuesday, April 20: 16,692 - deaths 37
Tuesday, April 27: 14,911 - deaths 45
Tuesday, May 4: 14,950 - deaths 43

The levels of infections and of deaths per day seem to have plateaued at a high level. The number of deaths could be expected to have gone down due to vaccinations, but they haven't. There has been a rise in the number of ICU patients again to 404. It was 390 on Friday, April 30.

Many people in Sweden don't get vaccinated. Some of them apparently because they don't want AZ shots. Considering the level of infection in Sweden, I think I would have accepted both AZ and J&J if I had lived there.

Quote:
* 55%, of people aged 60-64 (phase three of the vaccination plan) have been vaccinated in Stockholm Region.
* Despite many unfilled vaccination slots, vaccination co-ordinator Magnus Thyberg says he is not concerned about the will to get vaccinated.
* Vaccination of phase 4 - all remaining people aged 18-59, who have not yet had the jab - have started in several regions, and could be imminent also in the capital.
Just over half of phase 3 vaccinations done in Stockholm (RadioSweden, May 4, 2021)
Quote:
* Health care staff claimed much less holiday last year, compared to the year before.
* The employer's 'debt' for holiday that staff at 26 A&E hospitals were entitled to, but did not take last year, increased by 30 percent compared to the year before, according to a review by Swedish Radio.
* The president of trade union Vårdförbundet says health care staff are paying for this with their health.

Quote:
* Many vaccination appointment times in the Stockholm Region are going unclaimed.
* The Stockholm region is now open to bringing forward the start of phase 4."It is reasonable to assume that we can start already this week," says vaccine coordinator Magnus Thyberg.
* The Kalmar, Jönköping and Värmland regions are today opening up for phase 4.

I've had the AZ, both doses, second one over two weeks ago. Hasn't done me any harm.

Denmark considers the percentage of people experiencing very serious side effects to be too high: 1 in 40,000.
And the same goes for J&J in spite of the only 1 in 500,000 found in the USA so far. The experts here assume that too many cases of similar side effects in the USA will have gone under the radar and that the actual number is probably close to AZ's.

Denmark has bought more than 8 million doses (for a population of 5.8 million) of J&J! And the decision will delay the vaccination programme by about 4 weeks.

Another Swedish choir, Orphei Drängar: Efter OD-konsert på sista april – alla sångare smittade (SVT.se, May 6, 2021)
All eight singers tested positive a few days after the event. They obviously thought that social distancing was enough to protect them from the virus in an indoor setting. See short video!
Quote:
– We did everything right with space, distance, had different entrances, used face masks. So I have to say I was a little surprised. It is difficult to understand, says Alisa Bosnic, channel manager at P4 Uppland.
With the result in hand - would you have skipped the singing?
– It's easy to be wise after the act. Now in retrospect, I wish it had not happened.

No, you didn't do everything right, and you shouldn't have been surprised because it's not actually difficult to understand.
You shouldn't have listened to the Public Health Agency.

ETA: There is another video in the same link where a guy explains that they used face masks before and after singing!!!

The inventors of herd immunity by infection proudly present

You just couldn't make this stuff up, and it would be funny if it weren't reality:
Quote:
Två sidor av samma mynt.
Hur världen ser det vs Hur Sverige ser det
Ina Hallström on Twitter (May 6, 2021)
Two sides of the same coin.
How the world sees it versus How Sweden sees it

The two pictures are 1) a map of Europe with Sweden as the country with the second highest number of new registered infections - Cyprus is higher but its percentage of positives is lower - and 2) a screen shot from the newspaper Expressen saying, "Breaking News. Huge increase of people with natural antibodies"

Congrats Sweden for surpassing 1,000,000 confirmed cases of COVID since the beginning of the pandemic. With a total population of 10 mil and the third lowest pop density that is quite the achievement. But our leaders maintain we are doing “just fine”.Just don’t compare to 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 🇫🇮
Niklas on Twitter (May 6, 2021)

An article today estimates that many more have actually had the infection: close to one in four Swedes, based on antibody tests of blood from blood donors and people being hospitalized. The group with the highest percentage of positives was 0-19-year-olds.
Kraftig ökning – nära en fjärdedel av befolkningen har antikroppar (SVT.se, May 6, 2021)

The estimate in Denmark is 7 percent: Syv procent af danskerne har nu været smittet (TV2.dk, May 2, 2021)

Did nobody tell them about the Skagit Valley Chorale? I was emailing out choirmaster about that a full year ago and telling him the air space was becoming filled with small-droplet aerosols due to singing. We had already stopped choir practices but I wanted to be sure everyone was aware of the mechanism of spread.

Then there were a whole lot of guidelines about how far apart players of different wind instruments needed to sit and I was saying forget that, if the air space becomes aerosolised it doesn't matter a button how far apart people are.

I mean it was obvious. A year ago.

And yes I'm a bit fed up with Zoom choir practices but that's how it will stay until we can arrange an outdoor venue when the weather is warmer.

SSI Director: Rising infection rates are exactly as expected after reopening and can be managed

B.1.1.7 in Germany, Sweden and Great Britain (England):
Quote:
Excellent graphics, so the comparison of the ways in which the third wave has been handled by the three countries is worth taking a look at even if one does not understand German.

Denmark is now the world's #1 SARS-CoV-2 per-capita testing nation with 7,139,078 tests (total 41,474,152; pop. 5.8 million): Worldometers
Too bad it wasn't used to go for ZeroCovid.
#2 and #3 are Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands. The former has probably achieved herd immunity with more than 90 percent of the population vaccinated.

I don't think it's possible to sing in a face mask, and I don't think it would really prevent aerosolisation or inhaling the aerosol if you did, unless everyone was wearing FFP3 masks. And I'm pretty damn certain you can't sing in one of these!

Swedish authorities have now discovered that aerosol spread of SARS-CoV-2 is a real thing.

Quote:
Nya riktlinjer: Hemtjänstpersonal får bättre skydd mot covid-19 (SVT, May 7, 2021)
Care workers who work in other people's homes where Covid-19 has been established or is suspected must have access to respiratory protection. This has been made clear after the Swedish Working Environment Authority has introduced new guidelines.
(...)
- The background for this decision is that more and more studies indicate that you can actually transmit the infection even at distances longer than two meters, says Fredrik Haux, expert administrator in the indoor environment at the Swedish Working Environment Authority.
Normal ventilation inadequate
Haux refers in particular to studies having found that effective ventilation systems are required to reduce the concentration of small virus particles, so-called aerosols. In many workplaces there are ventilation systems that can handle this.
- The ventilation in ordinary homes, on the other hand, is not intended to disperse aerosols and particles in this way, it does not have the necessary airflow at all.
New guidelines: Home care staff receive better protection against covid-19

Too bad that they haven't also discovered asymptomatic spread so that care workers who work in other people's homes can be told to wear face masks even if Covid-19 has not been established or is suspected - to protect both workers and patients from asymptomatic spread.

Why Did It Take So Long to Accept the Facts about Covid? (NewYorkTimes, May 7, 2021)
In Sweden, I think that the triumvirate of Johan Giesecke and 'his boys' Johan Carlson and Anders Tegnell were too old for the job.
