In other Icelandic news:
Quote:
Despite new craters that opened on the 4th, 5th, and most recently 10th, April, the Geldingadalir/Meradalir volcano remains the smallest eruption in Iceland for many decades, but it is the country’s most “popular” of all time.
Never before have people in the most populous part of the country had such easy access to a volcanic eruption in what could be considered their backyard. All eruptions are dangerous, but this is nevertheless what is sometimes referred to as a ‘tourist eruption’.
New crater at “smallest but most popular” eruption (RUV.is, April 12, 2021)
I prefer no eruptions at all in my backyard, not even small, easy-access ones.
And who needs SARS-CoV-2 when you can have Sickness and cramps from volcanic gases (RUV.is, April 9, 2021)?

This isn't really news. I said so at the time. But it is surprising that Radio Sweden now writes about it:
Quote:
* When the spread of Covid-19 started taking off again after last summer, it was not matched by Public Health Agency statements.
* Swedish Radio's reporters have compared what state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at the time, to data about the spread of the virus and how people followed recommendations.
* Today, Tegnell says: "If we had cried wolf (back then), it may have made a difference, but we don't know that".
Spread of virus last autumn was played down (RadioSweden, April 13, 2021)

Quote:
* More people are being hospitalized for a Covid-19 infection, with 395 now receiving treatment in intensive care wards.
* The National Board of Health and Welfare reports that all 21 regions are expecting the situation for health care to worsen both in the short term and in the coming two weeks.
* State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said on Tuesday that there's "no real hint of a slowdown".
All regions predicting health care strain to worsen in coming days (RadioSweden, April 13, 2021)

Does he even know what "crying wolf" is? (It's when someone calls an alarm when there is no danger, just to get attention, then when there is danger nobody takes him seriously.)

In my region we're down to only 3 new cases for w/e 10th April, which is 2.6 per 100K for 7 days, at a positivity rate of 0.2%. The country as a whole is on 35.5 cases per 100K population per 7 days, and a positivity rate of 1.7%. So we're allowing travel beyond county boundaries from Friday and opening up a lot of stuff from the 26th. While we have negligible vaccine coverage of the under-50s. Way to go, politicians.

No, he has no idea what it means. From the very beginning of the pandemic, he has been playing down what was happening in Sweden while exaggerating what was happening everywhere else. This has given Swedes the impression that there is nothing to worry about, and since restrictions and face masks don't work, according to the state soothsayer, a majority of Swedes don't take it seriously when local infectious disease authorities tell them to wear face masks and stop partying for the time being.

And now, this attitude has become the chief argument against new restrictions in Sweden, ones that actually work: 'Well, since people don't even obey the recommendations that are already in place, there is no point in trying to introduce new ones.'

Tegnell T-shirts seem to be very popular. This one would be more appropriate. It was very fortunate for the Danes that the slogan Hope is not a strategy was introduced as early as February 2020.

The (in)famous Swedish consensus may be about to change:

Editorial:
Quote:
Sanningen hinner alltid ikapp dig (SvD, April 13, 2021)
Untruths are revealed in the end.
Anders Tegnell fails in both high school maths and history.
Yesterday, Radio Sweden's Ekot revealed that the Swedish Public Health Agency misled the Swedish people about the spread of the infection at the beginning of autumn.
The truth always catches up with you

An old one from OurWorldInData, but still relevant:
Quote:
The official data for deaths in Sweden is presented by date of death by Folkhälsomyndigheten, the Swedish Public Health Agency. This matters because it can take many days until all deaths for a particular day are reported in Sweden.

In practice this means that Sweden might today only report 10 deaths for yesterday, but once reporting is complete the death count for that same day might increase to 40.

The death counts for the last 2 weeks in Sweden should therefore always be interpreted as an incomplete count of what occurred in this period.
Why do COVID-19 deaths in Sweden’s official data always appear to decrease? (OurWorldInData, Nov. 13, 2020)

* Before the second wave of the pandemic, the Public Health Agency believed that measures put in place in elderly homes would reduce the spread of Covid-19 and deaths there.
* But the proportion of deaths at such places was just as big during the second wave as during the first.
* Now, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell tells Swedish Radio News that the measures were not as effective as had been hoped.
Tegnell: ”Measures weren't as effective as we'd hoped” (RadioSweden, April 15, 2021)

In the longer article in Swedish:
"Anders Tegnell tror att åtgärderna inom äldreomsorgen ändå hade en viss effekt särskilt under sommaren och den tidiga hösten."
"Anders Tegnell thinks that the measures in elderly care had some effect in the summer and in early autumn."
- which happened to be when the spread of infection was relatively low in Sweden. In the fall of 2020, the restrictions on visitors to nursing homes were suspended.

Johan Giesecke, May 2, 2020, when Sweden hadn't even started testing people who weren't seriously ill and about to get hospitalized:

Wishful thinking, obviously. Many of those interviews have one year anniversary in the coming weeks. I think Johan Giesecke agreed to be interviewed again in a year in the Unherd interview from April 17, 2021:

* The Public Health Agency's Britta Björkholm said this afternoon that the Covid-19 situation is serious in Sweden.
* Last week, the rate of infection rose again and is also increasing among children and youth, though Björkholm underlined that few people under the age of 20 get seriously ill or die.
* The Agency now recommends even students who don't have symptoms but who have been close to an infected person, to be tested.
High rate of infection - even among children and youth (RadioSweden, April 15, 2021)

It is astonishing that they not only seem to have discovered asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic spread of infection, but also that they now seem to acknowledge that it happens "even among children and youth."

One of the Swedish 'skeptics' still insists that children hardly ever got sick or transmitted the virus until the arrival of the "engelska mutationen", i.e. during the first wave when children, along with everybody else, weren't tested unless they got seriously ill. He gets very offended when asked for data to prove his point.

One year ago, an interview with Professor Johan Giesecke of Sweden began to go viral on YouTube. It was early in the pandemic, and he was the most senior voice (as a former state epidemiologist of Sweden, Chief Scientist at the European Centre of Disease Control and advisor to the Director General of the WHO) to come out forcefully against lockdowns.
He promised to come back in a year to review the evidence — and with typical Swedish punctuality, here he is.
What he got wrong, what he got right, and much besides. Don't miss.

Lena Hallegren, Sweden's minister of social affairs, says that Sweden has a relatively high level of infections, but that this is the case all over Europe:
Quote:
16 april 2021.

But no, not really:

The weekly report from Sweden's Public Health Agency:
Quote:

Approximately 41,000 confirmed cases of covid-19 were reported in Sweden in week 14, which is an increase of 7 percent compared with week 13. Approximately 305,000 individuals were tested in week 14, which is less than week 13, but remained at a high level compared to earlier during the pandemic. The Swedish newspaper Expressen mentions Giesecke's new interview with Unherd:
Johan Giesecke erkänner att han hade fel: ”Stora skillnader” (Expressen.se, April 17, 2021)
Johan Giesecke acknowledges that he was wrong: "Big differences"

He is not nearly as cocky as he was one year ago, but he still doesn't think that lockdowns and restrictions work. The difference between Sweden and its neighbors is one of culture rather than pandemic strategies, in his opinion.

People tend to remain entrenched in their positions, otherwise they would have a lot of apologising and resigning to do.

In the meantime, news from Finland, almost half of new infections are the B1.351 (SA) strain, which is concerning as no-one is sure if the current vaccines protect against it. I think in some trial with a certain vaccine it was only 25% protection as compared to 60- 70% in other first 'shots'.

It seems to be nothing but vanity in many people, not unlike the ISF Republicans when it had become apparent even to them that Trump was a psychopath. Giesecke is 71 (I thought he was much older), so there is no reason to keep him on anymore. I hope that they have managed to sideline him at the UN, so he can't act as an international adviser anymore.

If they manage to keep the general spread of the virus down, which they have so far, it shouldn't be a big problem. The delivery of Pfizer vaccines to EU countries is growing rapidly in the coming weeks.

People have wondered why the leftist party Vänsterpartiet backed up the herd-immunity-by-infection strategy. It turns out that the party's spokesperson on health issues, Karin Rågsjö, is employed by the Public Health Agency.
Twitter thread in Swedish:
Quote:

Twitter thread in Swedish:
Incredible that Tegnell claims the Swedes are led by scientists and not politicians, when he himself is effectively a politician, having been appointed by PM Lofven in that role. The Swedish equivalent of Matthew Hancock. He is not even a virologist. I believe he studied Physics at Imperial College; that's how he knows his network of other herd immunity devotees.

They took a gamble with the 'let it spread' doctrine and it bombed miserably.

It's a paradox. We haven't been following the "let it spread" doctrine since late March 2020. We've been very late in locking down, but there has never, since then, been an official acceptance that "everybody's going to get it". And yet our death rate is worse than Sweden's. I do think there is a big cultural element at work, but I think it has worked in Sweden's favour, not against it.

We're still essentially suppressed in my region, now sitting at only two cases in week ending 16th April (1.7 cases per 100K population per week) but we are getting one-off cases every two or three days so it ain't gone. When I was driving to pick up my groceries on Friday I saw a sign outside the fire station about symptom-free testing, but when I passed again on my bicycle on Saturday on my way to the doctor's surgery to get my second vaccination the sign had gone. I suppose it's surveillance. I just wish they would tell us if they find anything. They never tell us where these odd cases are popping up, "patient confidentiality", as if we could magically figure out who it was in a population of 6,000 people spread over a lot of countryside.

So I'm now fully vaccinated, but I don't like what I'm hearing about the SA variant one tiny little bit.

I don't know how Tegnell was appointed. I doubt that he is appointed by the PM, but I don't know.

At the beginning of the first wave, maybe you could describe it as a gamble. Since then, they have been busy playing the seriousness of situation down, deliberately.

Locking down late is disastrous, as is opening up too soon.

Population density:
UK: 275 per km2
Sweden: 25 per km2

Pub culture may play a role, I guess.
Social distancing comes natural to Scandinavians.
Public transport, maybe. I think rush-hour subways in London are worse than in Stockholm, for instance. Weren't the British (also) slow in starting to use face masks?

Average household size doesn't differ much:
UK: 2.4
Sweden 2.2

He's the 'State Epidemiologist'. I vaguely recall this time last year his being appointed by Lofven as a political post not as an independent scientist, but something might have been lost in the reporting of the story.

The population density of Scotland is a lot nearer that of Sweden though, and it was Scotland I was specifically referring to. I really don't know how we've managed to do so badly, all the while idiots are hailing Nicola Sturgeon as if she's some sort of cross between John Snow, Semmelweiss, Edward Jenner and Florence Nightingale.

It must have been:
Quote:
Since 2013 he is the state epidemiologist of Sweden, a title granted by the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

Scotland's population density is about two-and-a-half times that of Sweden's: 65 per km2, about half of Denmark's. It does seem to make a difference - unless a country consistently pursues ZeroCovid, and no European country did.

Well, that's what nationalism does to people's thinking! Letting go of the idea that national leaders have your best interest at heart can be as scary as giving up the idea that there is a benevolent god and an afterlife. Who is in charge when the outbreak hits a country is in many ways a question of luck. The Danish PM took advice from a civil servant, Barbara Bertelsen, with no degree in medicine. Her education was law. But she was reading the right epidemiological reports (from the UK) and stressed that Hope is not a strategy, i.e. the exact opposite of Tegnell.

With a different PM listening to a different adviser, things might have been very different.
