Time to hide for a month...

It was bad enough after Diana and Brenda's mum, let alone the Corfiot.

Anyway, whilst ‘Really old lady dies’ should not be a news story (at least not for very long) this will be milked for bloody weeks… I’m going to be really grateful for streaming and YouTube…

Radio 3 interrupted its concert mid-flow, so it's official. "Peacefully, this afternoon."

I have now turned off the radio.

She's been a respected international figure for longer than most of us have been alive. Not really a time to sneer.

And latest official announcement refers to "the King and Queen Consort." Sounds like they move fast.

It's instantaneous. The Queen is dead, long live the King. In one breath.

They interrupted all networks. I was on 6Music and got the same thing. There's really nothing more that needs saying after the announcement, but now they have to fill, respectfully, for I don't know how long. Several days I imagine.

96 is a damn good run.

Her coronation was the first to be televised (and it's still the only one, come to that), and the show was hugely popular in the US. One American woman was quoted enthusing over what a wonderful spectacle it was. "And who was that girl who played the Queen?"

Damn, I was expecting BBC1 to cover it, but it is on all BBC channels simultaneously so I have been cut off from the Diamond League athletics finals. (The athletics isn't showing on the red button or the iplayer or the sports website either. You have no choice of live BBC viewing)

I confess to be totally unprepared for this and I am begging for help to cope. I need a good months worth of Netflix and Amazon prime recommendations to avoid the sycophantic royalist tosh on domestic TV.

Considering that this whole bunch of parasites have been taking the piss out of the UK population for donkey's years I look at it more as responding in kind.

And, yes, I could have said this any day of the last 50 years or so...And did, so it would be hypocritical in the extreme to suddenly come over all lovey dovey Royal sycophant.

OK, it can be a sad thing for a family when someone in that family dies. However, it is nothing to do with anyone else. Their grief, assuming that is their response, is theirs and theirs alone.

She's also been a hated symbol of empire for longer than I've been alive. She's been a lot of things to a lot of people, most of them giving her far too much credit.

I'd say "Rest in peace", but we all know it's going to be weeks before anyone lets that happen.

Since I never really cared one way or another about her, I will only say that she had quite the long run doing what she did. Most of us won't be able to say that.

Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles -- kingons, or possibly queons -- that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. Shhhh, we can't talk about all those times the royals have interfered with proposed laws to change things to their benefit, 'cos that would be disrespectful.

There are lots of examples that the Graun, bits of the Scottish press and the likes of Norman Lamb have published...

Do all the current barrister silks have to get new business cards saying "K.C." or do they keep "Q.C." and only the next batch onward are "K.C."?

I'm wondering if someone in the Royal Navy needs to go officially rename all their ships?

These are related, as there will be 'genuine' news stories to go along with it for some time. For example, there will be a state funeral.

Although Charles is declared King automagically, there's going to be a lag in pickup around the colonies. As another example, over here, we're going to probably have a parliamentary declaration for Charles, which will be covered in the news.

Of course, there will be all manner of retrospectives, etc. too...

I probably won't sneer so much. Quite apart from the institution itself, she seemed solid. Whether the monarchy is outdated in the 21st century, well... we all thought a land war in Europe was outdated in the 21st century, too!

Originally Posted by lobosrul5 View Post

That also goes for all the colonies' ships. There's always been a plan in place for the passing of the monarch. I just checked the Canadian Navy's twitter page... not a peep yet.

I mean does anyone really think any country is going to pick now to change their relationship with the Monarchy?
