UK says 'significant gap' with EU over N.Ireland, ready to use Article 16

LONDON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Britain's Brexit minister said a "significant gap" remained in talks with the European Commission over trade with Northern Ireland, and it was ready to take unilateral action if needed.

"We would still like to find a negotiated solution," David Frost said on Twitter after meeting European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic in London.

"But the gap between our positions is still significant and we are ready to use Article 16 to protect the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement if other solutions cannot be found."

I suggest the RNLI puts them all in a lifeboat (with vests, etc.), tows them into the middle of the Channel on a rainy day, and let's them sit there until passed sunset.
That might change some minds.

Not just a dick move, but a criminal offence to obstruct the emergency services, including the RNLI.

LBC tweeted
@LBC
The RNLI has confirmed a Hastings lifeboat was blocked from rescuing migrants after an LBC caller witnessed fishermen shouting angry abuse.

One of their crews was blocked from going on a call by fishermen who said they did not want any more migrants being rescued.
"There was a group of fisherman pulled up, gutting fish on the shore, and as the boat station opened up we heard the fisherman start shouting things like 'don't bring any more of those home, we're full up', 'that's why we stopped our donations'

"The lifeboat crew pulled the boat out and were going to go into the water and some of the fishermen deliberately came out with their buckets and stood directly in the line of the boat so the boat couldn't be put in the water."

In a statement, Sussex Police said: "Just after 4pm on Saturday, November 20, police were made aware of reports of a disturbance near to the Hastings RNLI Lifeboat Station.
"A police officer attended the scene while also being supported by colleagues monitoring the situation on CCTV.
"No arrests were made."

Replying to @LBC
James O'brian (LBC Presenter) tweeted
#mrjamesob
James O'Brien: It breaks my heart, the idea we've created a country in which someone can think 'I know what I'm going to do, I'm going to start shouting abuse at a lifeboat full of volunteers'.

If Insulate Britain protestors have been jailed for blocking motorways (and therefore blocking ambulances), should anyone blocking the RNLI from call outs also be tried and imprisoned if found guilty?
We are signed up to SOLAS (Int'l Convention Safety of Lives at Sea) treaty, and it's part of our domestic law.

If one of those 'fishermen' put out a mayday the lifeboat would be straight out to rescue them without a second thought.

Ah yes.
Quote:
April 4th, 1984.
Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean.
Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with
laughter when he sank.

Then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in
her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and comforting him although she was blue with fright herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood.
Then there was a wonderful shot of a child's arm going up up up right up into the air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have followed it up and there was a lot of applause from the party seats but a woman down in the prole part of the house suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting they didnt oughter of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles say, typical prole reaction they never----
I'm sure "GBNews" would love to carry such.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has taken down its website after “suspicious activity” and said its staff had been sent threatening emails.

The charity’s website was reduced to a pared-back landing page on Friday afternoon after a suspected hacking attempt.

The charity has come under increasing criticism from anti-migrant groups over its role in saving lives in the Channel, as people continue to attempt to cross from France in small boats.

Far-right party Britain First is among those to have attacked the RNLI, encouraging people to message the charity to tell it to stop saving people who get into difficulty trying to cross to England.
.
An RNLI spokesperson said: “The RNLI’s website has been the subject of suspicious activity today, Friday 3 December 2021. As a precaution, the RNLI has taken the decision to take down its website while investigating the activity. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused and we’re working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“In light of this suspicious activity, and following threatening emails that the charity has received and reported to the police today, the RNLI has taken the opportunity to remind its staff and volunteers to stay vigilant to keep themselves, their colleagues and RNLI systems safe.

Rocco Forte on the radio. Voted for Brexit and now can’t find staff to work in his restaurants & hotels.
Unhappy about how few of his workers are British.

Another Brexit outcome. I am having to pay Customs VAT on my Christmas presents received from England. I pointed out that they were gifts and less than £36 - which I thought they were - but UPS, the couriers, came back to me to say it was over £100 and the limit was €45. On top of the VAT there is also €16 'UPS handling fee', which I paid in order to get the goodies by Christmas.

Moral: if you are sending anything to people in the EU, separate them into small packets of under €45 (£36?) each and mark them clearly as 'GIFT'.

No surprise Lord Frost had to quit before he was sacked. Boris Johnson and Lord Frost were like a couple of used car salesmen whilst 'negotiating' (haha!) Brexit. Underneath the glossy shiny chasis and furry unicorn seat covers, with fluffy dice in the back window, they knew all along they were selling us a rust bucket with the wheels falling off.

One of the EU negotiators said they were shocked to discover the Brits, whom they had admired as probably having a 'Harry Potter's box of tricks', actually had nothing but bluff.

Lord Frost got out in true Del Boy-style before the fun starts in the new year.

Australian trade deal done and dusted, meant to be the blueprint for future trade deals….

Boris Johnson’s post-Brexit trade deal with Australia will damage the UK’s agriculture and food sectors by hundreds of millions of pounds, according to the government’s own impact assessment.

The UK Governments bungling of Brexit, and in particular the situation in Northern Ireland has left science funding a hostage to fortune.

Quote:
Scientific leaders have urged the government not to abandon talks to enable the UK to participate in a €100bn European research programme.

They have told BBC News that being cut out of EU research would "greatly disadvantage" British science.

Agreement in principle was reached, but UK involvement is now a bargaining chip in talks over Northern Ireland.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-59729638

It looks like the usual MO for Boris Johnson and his government, sign up to an agreement but then renege on it as soon as they think there's an advantage to them doing so. Whether it's because they didn't understand the deal in the first place, or whether they did understand it but always intended to break the deal is a point for discussion.

I'm not sure if they're ever going to learn that the Violet Elizabeth Bott statesmanship model simply doesn't cut any ice with the EU. The EU has actual red lines that they're not prepared to break and are happy to call the UK's bluff in order to protect them.

If the right to existence is conceded to new-born children, then they have the right; if it is not conceded to them, as was the case among the Spartans and ancient Romans, then they do not have it. For only society can give or concede it to them; they themselves cannot take it, or give it to themselves.

Colour us surprised.
My degree of sympathy is directly proportional to the number of them who voted for Brexit and based on the comments in the article its probably around the 'karmas a bitch' level.

Last May Michael Gove guaranteed food produced to lower standards would not enter the UK, this week, the government has signed a 3 year deal allowing tariff free imported cane sugar, grown with 20 products I am banned from using in growing sugar beet.

Well hull had a large Brexit vote. Which is odd, as most of my friends voted remain. I only know a few who voted leave.

Bubbles and all that.

I think this is the first time i have posted in this thread (for reasons) but I can't resist this:

One year on, most voters say Brexit has gone badly

All I can add as a personal observation is, "What the **** did you expect to happen?"

What was expected to happen was that the EU would cave in and give the UK everything it wanted with a pink ribbon tied around it and pay for the privilige.
After all, that was what was promised.

And the fact that it did not happen is clearly the fault of the EU, so the UK should be glad to be out of there.

Presumably he was a remainer, sadly this is the Brexit we knew would be delivered.

Indeed.

As Darat points out, pretty much everything which has come to pass was predicted by economists, bankers, business folk, some politicians, observant layfolk and others, but it was routinely dismissed by the likes of ******* Rees ******* Mogg and his ilk as "Project Fear", while the lying arse was shifting his own company to Dublin to stay in the EU...

Anyone now claiming that they didn't vote for this should not be let loose with sharp pencils.
