At least 8 dead and no mention of the number of injured which is said to include a cop. Shooter is reported to be a student and a second person is also reported to be in custody. Cops are now sweeping the campus looking for possible explosives.

Just another day in the life of the USA.

Wasn't this the same school that was involved in the Supreme Court case about prayer at high school football games? Obviously, the problem is not too many guns, it's not enough Jesus.

KHOU: By 11 a.m. authorities were at another scene, about two miles from the school, where authorities say they were investigating the possibility of explosive devices inside a mobile home.

(That's probably where he lives.)

Daily Mail: The 17 year old gunman burst into an art class and yelled "Surprise!" He had an assault style rifle, a shotgun and a pistol. Explosives planted as well.

Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Douglas HS, this one. 4 major shootings in about a 7 month span. People, including me, are becoming desensitized.

It does get kind of predictable, doesn't it?

Same old stuff. A bunch of dead kids. An assault rifle, funerals, press conferences. In my youth we didn't have tweets, but now, tweets.

It's kind of tedious, really. It's always the same.

It is a way to cope. Learning to cope and putting such shootings into perspective, it is highly unlikely a school kid will be shot whilst at school compared to other causes of juvenile deaths is the way forward.

“What will it take for Congress to step up and do their jobs to protect innocent children from gun violence? We fervently hope this is the day when our elected officials stand and take action.”

The answer is nothing can or will change until kids find that shooting up their classmates is not a route to infamy. Instead they will be as anonymous as they were prior to the shooting, because such shootings no longer result in much attention.

But thats impossible. So the mainstream media stops reporting? Well his name is still going to get out there. Someone who knew the shooter is going to tweet or facebook about it. Then it will go viral.

ETA: unless you mean because they are just so commonplace that no one even gives a **** anymore. Thats a scary thought.

“We heard, like, five more bangs, and then the kid came out [with] a black, like, trench coat on, a sawed-off shotgun with a pistol grip, and I think something sharp on his chest,” Rabon described. “And then he turned, and instead of looking our way, he just grabbed his backpack and went right back into the art room, so, at that point, we knew it was an active shooter.”

Rabon said that after he saw the shooter, he and his teacher went back into the classroom and closed the door. His teacher reportedly pulled the fire alarm in order to alert authorities, as Rabon said people in the class did not have cell service in order to call 911.

Another student, Avery Garza, told HLN that he also saw the suspect in a black trench coat and with a sawed-off shotgun.

Garza said his friend witnessed the shooter pulling out a pistol and shooting a girl in the head.

“He was in that class, and the shooter came in and started shooting. And he had a sawed-off shotgun and a pistol. And he shot a girl, and then pulled his pistol out and shot her in the head,” Garza said.

“We know who it is, but unfortunately I cannot give the name out. He was wearing a trench coat, I think it said USSR on it,” he added.

I do mean that. A mass shooter = 5 minutes of attention and then nothing. People will hear a name and it means nothing till they google it and find a short sub entry in Wikipedia's list of school shootings (it is not worth its own entry) or a couple of news stories. The reaction will be, oh him anyway what was last nights football score? Or, don't remember that one.

When kids learn their actions mean nothing they may stop the copy catting.

It was probably a semi-automatic chambered in an intermediate power round with a detectable magazine, which are all the important factors for being able to reliably kill a large number of people in large groups quickly.

Not that the combination of shotgun and pistol would be ineffective either.

It's unbelievable. Maybe someone should start one, but you're right about the desensitization. You know who notices these things? Teenagers. I've been pretty surprised at what seems to be genuine fear, even though they know that statistically there's very little chance of it happening at a given school. But they've grown up with lockdown drills. It wears on them. Teachers also are at risk.

Pistol grip 12 gauge shotguns are notoriously hard to control without a lot of practice and a strong grip. An inexperienced shooter can miss badly even from close range.

The guns apparently are his father's.

That seems odd to me but maybe it's too rural. Also was there no regular phone?

Latest report I read said shotgun and pistol. Earlier reports said an additional AR-15.

Some confusion reigns.

I don't know how you kill 10 and wound another bunch without something that has a high capacity magazine or a fast reload capability, but maybe the kid was just very, very good at it. I guess we'll find out sooner or later.

BBC says he wrote in journals on his computer and phone saying he wanted to do the shooting and commit suicide afterwards. When the cops caught him he said he didn't have the courage to kill himself. The bombs are CO2 device and a Molotov cocktail says BBC. These things may not be confirmed.

Weird, it's not that rural of an area. It's not far from I-45 which is built up completely between Houston and Galveston. I've made that drive several times.

CNN: Two school resource officers were on the campus and confronted the shooter "early on in the process," Governor Abbott said. The other guy detained is injured and suspected to be an accomplice but not a shooter. Ten dead and ten injured so far.

Well they're in big time trouble then. Active cell phone blockers are illegal at the federal level. Passive ones are just building really thick walls.

Another student, Avery Garza, told HLN that he also saw the suspect in a black trench coat and with a sawed-off shotgun. Garza said his friend witnessed the shooter pulling out a pistol and shooting a girl in the head. “He was in that class, and the shooter came in and started shooting. And he had a sawed-off shotgun and a pistol. And he shot a girl, and then pulled his pistol out and shot her in the head,” Garza said. “We know who it is, but unfortunately I cannot give the name out. People will hear a name and it means nothing till they google it and find a short sub entry in Wikipedia's list of school shootings (it is not worth its own entry) or a couple of news stories. The reaction will be, oh him anyway what was last nights football score? Or, don't remember that one. When kids learn their actions mean nothing they may stop the copy catting.

I've been pretty surprised at what seems to be genuine fear, even though they know that statistically there's very little chance of it happening at a given school. But they've grown up with lockdown drills. It wears on them. Teachers also are at risk.

An inexperienced shooter can miss badly even from close range. The guns apparently are his father's.

I don't know how you kill 10 and wound another bunch without something that has a high capacity magazine or a fast reload capability, but maybe the kid was just very, very good at it. I guess we'll find out sooner or later.
