You have to love....

Our Missouri legislators.

Today, we learned that one has introduced a bill to create the “Missouri Minutemen”.

This “not a militia” would be composed of armed citizens who could be called up in case of a “civilization threatening emergency”:
https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/po...a-7541cf52744a

Oh, and the list of members would be confidential, not available to the public.

The members would supply their own guns and ammo, but when called up these would become the property of the state, and thus not subject to confiscation by those pesky feds.

I mean, wow. Just... Wow.

In the event of a civilization threatening emergency, what we’ll really need is a bunch of yahoos with guns.
How about a “militia” of doctors, health-care workers, engineers, farmers, and sanitation experts?

I just read the bill. Seems like it would easier to pass a resolution in recognition of Missouri cosplayers and LARPers.

ETA: The bill says minutemen have to buy their own uniforms. ...where do you suppose one buys a Missouri Minuteman uniform?

Seems if there is a "civilization threatening event", no one is going to care about your uniform. Probably just makes a convenient target.

Is the general public going to be aware of what their post-apocalyptic costume is supposed to look like, so they can submissively defer? If so, Amazon and eBay will be rocking knock-offs to wear in Missouri bars. "This shirt? Oh, I am part of the Special Agents of Missouri S.H.I.E.L.D. What'd you say your name was, darlin?"

You know, there's just the ever-so-slight chance that this is actually an attempt to confiscate their guns by the state.

Step 1: Create this "militia"

Step 2: Declare the current GOP Outrage-du-jour a "threat to civilization" so the militia is activated

Step 3: The State now owns all their guns, please place them in the designated receptacles, or faces charges of theft.

Okay, sure, maybe not.....but maybe?

It'd be fun to seed that idea on right-wing extremist social media. Hell, you could use that post almost exactly as is, with a small re-write to Step 2.

During the Civil War (the first one), Missouri was a Mad Max of rebel and union militias, armies, and even contending state governments, with irregular regulators foaming around the edges. (Ever hear of the James brothers?)

I guess old times there is not fergotten. Don't look away, dixieland.

Somehow, I think that would only happen to units like the Ferguson Minutemen.

I have a feeling that these clowns would consider blacks or latinos moving into the neighborhood to be a "civilization threatening emergency."

Or an election you don't like the outcome of. Or a global pandemic. Or a BLM March. Or inappropriate email servers.

I can't access the news report (access from the EU is blocked), but I wonder if this is from the same genie who came up with the McDaniel Militia Act back in 2019? Y'know, the one requiring every male between the ages of 18 and 35 who could legally own a gun, to buy an AR-15.

How is it "not a militia"?

Quote:
militia
/mɪˈlɪʃə/
noun

a military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia

The original Minutemen were considered a militia too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minutemen

Quote:
Minutemen were civilian colonists who independently formed militia companies self-trained in weaponry, tactics, and military strategies, comprising the American colonial partisan militia during the American Revolutionary War. They were known for being ready at a minute's notice, hence the name.[1] Minutemen provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that enabled the colonies to respond immediately to war threats.
