What will you do the day they take the guns away?
You are a law abiding responsible gun owner who has various rifles and shoots deer when in season and targets with your AR-15 at other times. Sometimes you get rid of the rabbits with your shotgun. You have a couple for handguns for defence and a CCW permit.
The day finally comes that SCOTUS has approved the laws that banned all guns except rifles with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds, shotguns with a maximum of three rounds and hand guns with a maximum capacity of ten rounds. Everything else has to be given up, including CCW permits, for which you will receive compensation. (The precise details are not the issue here) So you face losing half your guns say. What will you do? Proclaim tyranny and prepare for a shoot out with the police/ATF or whoever is coming to get your guns? Hide in the hills joining a militia to fight off the police/ATF? Hide your guns and deny you had any illegal ones? Hand them over and then buy new ones off the black market? Hand then over? Or something else? |

Crime spree! Because the only thing that keeps every single person from criming out all the time on every other person is the terror that they might have a gun. So once guns are forbidden, every single person will do all the crimes to every other person. Simultaneously.

It would mean that the Bill of Rights and property rights in general would no longer be worth squat.
Understand...I DO NOT OWN WEAPONS BECAUSE I WANT TO SHOOT PEOPLE! I target shoot. That's it, and rarely. But a government that says, in a nutshell, that I'm not fit to own something I enjoy safely is not a government I want to be part of anymore. It's the same argument as censorship: you're too stupid to be trusted with this gun/idea. |

Probably, but that's not the point. The point is that if the government on a whim can take legally held property from law abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong with it, then I don't want to live under it. And if I must, I'd rather have a UHC system to make up for it.

So your response to having to hand in your guns to the US government will be to hand them in to Canadian Border Services instead? At least for the rifles, we're more restrictive. Most are limited to only 5 rounds. Pistols are limited to 10 as in the OP. I'm not sure what the limit is for shotguns, but it may be 3 as in the OP. Oh, and handguns require an extra license on top of the one required for any firearms, and are subject to much more severe restrictions on transportation and use. So just driving along with them will be problematic.

I'd protest. I wouldn't hand in my guns because none of them besides the shotgun would be subject and that I'd simply put the restricter in.
It would be a huge departure from case law on the second amendment or another amendment, so public force would have to be hugely for such restrictions. I'd point out that there are many who would resist with force leading to more death, damage, and gang power increase than they were trying to avoid in the first place unless those things had changed at that point. There would be a Waco a week for months. It would politically empower groups that are currently losing support. All around a bad idea for the US. I'd remind them of the failed war on drugs and alcohol. I'd express sadness that they played right into some nutters hands by doing exactly what for years they claimed they weren't going to. |

I disagree.giving up a basic right is not a reasonable course of action.
In reality, ain't gonna happen. We might see a few more restrictions on gun sales...which I would not be against...but that will be about the extent of the new laws. No one except the usual suspects on the far left are talking about a total ban on guns. |

I am assuming somehow the law now says only certain types of gun are legal and all the rest are to be seized/given up, as happened after the massacres at Hungerford and Dumblane in the UK.

I believe the courts have ruled that the right is not absolute.
I've suggested that it could be possible for the SC to ignore precedence and rule that the organized militia clause is important and restrict private firearm ownership without a constitutional amendment. I still don't think it'll happen. |

Fact is that enforcing a Gun Ban in the US would make enforcing Prohibition look easy in comparasion.
