Reading some other articles, it appears that the organizers had created an app that was supposed to be used by Yuppies to book bands:

Sounds like they collected $12,000 average per ticket, hoping that they would raise enough money to hold the festival and figure out how to do it in the meantime I guess.

Up to $12,000? That's pretty ambitious; more so even than your more-established celebrations of yuppie mostly-white privilege like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Burning Man, and the like. Although in fairness, had this "Fyre Festival" actually been planned and implemented as advertised I suppose the remote location and related logistics would've justified the premium.

Well, that puts a bit of a smile on my face, I must admit.

From the article:

“I grossly underestimated the resources that would be necessary to hold an event of this magnitude,” he said.

And:

“In an attempt to raise what I thought were needed funds, I lied to investors about various aspects of Fyre Media and my personal finances. Those lies included false documents and information.”

Using other people's money to finance your own get rich quick scheme always seems like such a brilliant idea on paper.

You have to hand it to this guy McFarland. It takes some cahones to start another scam while waiting to resolve the Fyre Festival case.

I'm clearly never going to understand judge logic. He's a fraud his whole life and he perpetrates another ticket scam while out on bail, so...the judge sentences him to half the time requested by the prosecution? I wonder what would happen to a crack dealer caught dealing again while on bail.

I saw one of the videos about the Fyre Festival. This guy was moving on to new grifting schemes even while he was on trial, and then still moving on them awaiting sentencing, then again while in jail. And even seeking journalists to embed with him as he worked on the new grifts. Calling journalists from jail with a cell phone - even though such phones were prohibited in that jail and he was calling - you know - journalists. The very people who make buck by exposing such things.

And it seemed to be working. This guy is one of those people who seems to have an almost infinite ability to get other people to excuse his actions. Like "Oh, sure it was a terrible thing to do! But that's just Billy! We all love him anyway!"

So he'll get investors, and scam them. And then get more investors. He struck me as the sort of person who can spend a lifetime undergoing perpetual legal prosecution and perpetual bankruptcy, while also living an intermittently luxurious lifestyle as he'll never be able to not find someone willing to fall for his schtick.

This guy was moving on to new grifting schemes even while he was on trial, and then still moving on them awaiting sentencing, then again while in jail. And even seeking journalists to embed with him as he worked on the new grifts. Calling journalists from jail with a cell phone - even though such phones were prohibited in that jail and he was calling - you know - journalists. The very people who make buck by exposing such things. And it seemed to be working. This guy is one of those people who seems to have an almost infinite ability to get other people to excuse his actions. Like "Oh, sure it was a terrible thing to do! But that's just Billy! We all love him anyway!" So he'll get investors, and scam them. And then get more investors. He struck me as the sort of person who can spend a lifetime undergoing perpetual legal prosecution and perpetual bankruptcy, while also living an intermittently luxurious lifestyle as he'll never be able to not find someone willing to fall for his schtick.
