Dragon Con 2020 with SkepTrack

This is a thread for all things Dragon Con 2020 related, especially if they apply to the SkepTrack, which is the Skeptic's content track at Dragon Con, organized by Derek and April Colanduno.

You can think of SkepTrack as a "mini-TAM" or "mini-CSICON" or "mini-NECSS" or "mini-QED" or mini-whatever-your-local-skeptical-convention-is-these-days.

It takes place Thursday, September 3rd to Monday, September 7.

If you haven't heard of Dragon Con before: It's like "Mardi Gras for Geeks". It's MORE than a mere sci-fi/fantasy convention! It is a celebration of all things nerdy and geeky, and it's got more live entertainment than any other such con (I think), and it' got 24-hour programming in case you wanted that.

Oh yes, it also has STEM-related tracks, for science, space, robotics and other DIY projects, and of course... SkepTrack for skepticism.

Anyway, for this parent post, it's too early to declare who or what is going to be there, for certain. But, I will keep you updated as I know more.

If you haven't gotten your hotel room, yet, it might not be too late; although I could be wrong about that. Hotel rooms go fast in that area. I managed to book a hotel near the center of the con, but NOT one of its host hotels, this time. It's cheaper (even with the discount), and getting into your room is probably easier.

Last time I went to Dragon Con (2018), I booked too late, and had to get a room at a hotel a few miles away.

Anyone else going?

Anyone want to help me choose my costumes? I will likely have two of them: One that will be insanely complicated in some manner. The other will be much easier to wear, for when I don't feel like dealing with the complications of the other. This strategy has worked well for the past couple of years.

These are the ideas I have so far:
  • Rufus from Bill & Ted (reuse of 2019 NYCC, CSICon and Halloween costume)
  • An MST3K Jumpsuit (probably reused from my 2020 birthday party, which is aiming to be MST3K themed)
  • MitChell, a male victim of Aperture Science (A play on the fact that my real name is Mitchell)
  • Doctor Octopus (This will be insanely complicated, but I have creative ideas for the extra arms, that I don't see often. And, my nephew will love it.)

I like both the MST3k and the MitChell ideas. I am not fond of complicated stuff but as long as it does not involve velcro, go for it if you enjoy the challenge.

Another costume idea I thought of: Cal Kestis, the main character from Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. He's a character that finds all sorts of ponchos to wear in various crates throughout the game. My twist on the character, is that my poncho will be based on the Dragon Con Marriott Carpet pattern!

I hope that, if I do go along with that idea, that no one else does the same thing.

Also, it might cost a bit to get a nice-looking 3D-printed BD-1 droid to go along with it.

And, another quirk about Jedi Fallen Order, relevant to my proposed Dragon Con costume, is that the game allows you to customize the look of your saber. As it happens, many of the components for doing so, in the game, happen to match with components available in Savi's Workshop in Galaxy's Edge, in Disney Parks.

And guess who happens to have a saber from Galaxy's Edge that just happens to match one of the possible sabers you can build inside Jedi Fallen Order?! I do, I do!!

Too bad the million dollar challenge no longer exists, you might have a real shot at it.

As of today, June 3rd, 2020, Dragon Con's site shows no signs of the event abating. They're still acting as though they are going to actually be able to run the thing!

If they do, I will probably join them. It will be different, yes, and perhaps quite lower key. But, I am betting it will still be fun!

So, now I need some creative ideas for adding a face mask to these costumes, and/or making a costume that would already have a face covering as part of it.
  • Rufus from Bill & Ted: This is such a good year for such a costume, since there is a new B&T movie coming out this year (even if Rufus isn't in it). It would be a shame to waste this opportunity. I'm thinking maybe instead of growing my own beard out, I could wear a mask that has a beard either glued to or drawn out on it.
  • An MST3K Jumpsuit: I see there are people making Gizmonic logo masks and riffing silhouette logos on masks. But, I would prefer something more creative. I can't remember any specific sketch where the host of the show (Joel, Mike, or Jonah) ever wore a face mask. But, if anyone thinks of anything, let me know!
  • MitChell, a male victim of Aperture Science: I'm thinking I could actually wear a breathing mask from Half-Life Alyx, and pretend I am being hunted down by the "Jeff" monster from that game. They take place in the same universe, so why not?!
  • Cal Kestis: I don't think he ever wore a mask, but I might be able to put something Star-Warsy together.

My more elaborate Doc Oc costume idea might have to wait until next year.

Welp, it's officially cancelled, now, and going Virtual this year.

So, that takes care of this thread, for now!
