I've encountered it during my brief and disastrous experiment investing in peer to peer lending. The number of charge offs was astounding to me. The company that does the lending does try to recoup some of it but I'd say settling an unsecured loan of 38K for 12 isn't too uncommon, based on what I got when they settled the charge off.

What really surprised me was that number of charge off loans didn't seem to change based on the credit risk of the loan. The number of charge offs in the top tear was about the same as the high risk, high payoff loans in the bottom tranche.
