It is interesting that a state visit can be cancelled over something that wasn't even a thing until long after the visit was announced. It's almost as if those around President Trump were getting cold feet about the visit to Denmark and needed to manufacture a reason not to go

Expect repercussions if you tell Trump that one of his absurd ideas is absurd!

I was wrong about this one. I didn't expect the primeminister to call Trump's absurd idea absurd:

A Danish comedian has compiled a list of things in Denmark that Trump can buy, but unfortunately it is written in nonsensical English:

Quote:
1. Høfde 42: a very nice place on the seaside with very nice sundowngangs. And you behøver not to use your selvbrowner anymore, because we have put some very nice kemikaliers in the ground, so your skin will get a nice orange colour if you roll you in the sand.
2. The little havfrue: You might want to get the støbeform to the head as well, just in case.
3. Aarhus Ø: a very nice ny bydel. You behøver not to use kræfter on ******* it up, because it is already ****** up - like the Ørestad, which you can also get very billigt!
4. We can also give you a good tilbud on the københavnske cyklisters if you will? And all the electric løbehjuls!
5. Lars Løkke and the Blue Block is also for sale. It sounds like a rock band but it is a godt brugt statsminister, and a nice politisk sammenrend in totally opløsning. You would really like the kaos!
6. And of kors Roskilde. Goes without saying. You can get that gratis - it’s a træls place to stand off!

For some reason, Tucker Carlson doesn't have much to say about Trump and Greenland:

They also mention financial troubles that Denmark is supposed to have. News to me!

By the way, what was supposed to happen to the Greenlanders? They are all Danish citizens. Were they supposed to be bought as well?

I guess the same thing would have happened to the Greenlanders as happened to the Puerto Ricans, American Virgin Islanders, Guamanians and so on.

Puerto Ricans got citizenship after Puerto Rico became a US Territory.

Quote:
On March 2, 1917, Wilson signed the Jones-Shafroth Act, under which Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans were granted statutory citizenship, meaning that citizenship was granted by an act of Congress and not by the Constitution (thus it was not guaranteed by the Constitution).
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-...for-war-effort

US Virgin Islanders gained citizenship through an act of Congress:

Quote:
Residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands have been citizens since Feb. 25, 1927, when Congress voted to bestow U.S. citizenship on them.
https://weather.com/storms/hurricane...rican-citizens

Guamanians had a much longer (50+ year) process to gain citizenship:

Quote:
On 1 August 1950, the Organic Act of Guam was signed into law by President Truman ending the era of naval rule on the island and granting civil government to Guam. Residents of Guam at the time of the Organic Act’s passage and their descendants were granted congressional US citizenship. Guam’s political status was defined as an “unincorporated territory.”
https://www.guampedia.com/chamorro-d...-civil-rights/

Whether Greenlanders could opt to retain their original citizenship, would be compelled to become US citizens, or would be allowed dual citizenship is a good (but hopefully moot) question IMO

Non of those, as far as I know, were citizens of another country.

The Greenlanders are Danish citizens, which gives them a lot of rights. Even if they retained their Danish citizenship, what would happen to their health care? What would happen to their free education?

But this is all so stupid, anyway. I can't understand what Trump was thinking, or how how advisors didn't talk some sense into him.

The nickname "The Emperor Without Clothes" is used in many Scandinavian newspapers today.

I'm pretty sure they must have been, unless they were stateless.

All good, but hopefully moot, questions.

If they gave up (voluntarily or involuntarily) their Danish citizenship to become US citizens they they would likely simply have the rights (or lack thereof) of US citizens.

If they retain their Danish citizenship then they'd be US Residents with foreign citizenship. Unless Denmark is willing to fund them, I think they would lose any rights above and beyond what US citizens enjoy/endure.

Given that he hasn't managed to build his wall, fix the Korean peninsula or win any trade wards, perhaps he sees this as his legacy for posterity. Then again, maybe he thinks anything is for sale at the right price.

I don't think that President Trump is receptive to having sense talked into him and as he's now surrounded himself with Yes Men and idiots, maybe there isn't anyone to talk sense.

Unfortunately this could result in the US pulling out of NATO, starting a trade war or some other gross over-reaction.

He's stated in the past that this is his primary negotiating tactic. If the other party won't give you everything that you want with no hesitation, walk away and wait for them to beg you to come back to the table. He's probably sitting by the phone, expecting the Prime Minister to call him at any minute to offer to sell Greenland. At a discount.

This morning the BBC reported the suggestion that the reason for cancelling was that Obama is heading to Denmark just before and Trump was concerned that Obama would get a far better reception.

How believable is that? Seriously. Who thinks Trump has a bit of an ego problem.....Oh... I see.

Who knows how serious any of this was or if it was just another lunatic bomb lobbed to distract? But this does make one thing clear: Trump & Co. are fully convinced that the continental glacier sitting atop the mini-continent that is Greenland will be toast in the not-too-distant future. The Texas-sized piece of mineral-rich, strategically-located North Atlantic real estate that is Greenland will coveted by global superpowers and require a strong NATO to defend. The fact that the first salvo has come from somewhere inside the house is just the latest cuckoo-for-Cocoa Puffs moment of the early 21st Century.

The Texas-sized piece of mineral-rich, strategically-located North Atlantic real estate that is Greenland will coveted by global superpowers and require a strong NATO to defend. You do realize you are talking about Trump and his lackeys, right? They are incapable of planning this far ahead.

Yech. Couldn't they have chosen some other figure of speech?

God, I hope I'm centuries off with that estimate.

How believable is that? Seriously. Who thinks Trump has a bit of an ego problem.....Oh... I see.
Well, he could have come up with a less ridiculous excuse, but then again, why bother? Trump fans buy whatever crap he's spouting, and everyone else knows he's a buffoon.

Did they ever solve the mystery of why Greenland's Western Settlement was abandoned? My new theory involves a prophetic vision of an orange monster trying to buy the place. That would send any population scuttling away.

Well, those pussy Danes might scuttle away to cower in their halls. But let a band of hardy Geats make landfall? Then we'll see what's what.

Good God, a horrid thought occurs: you don't suppose he was trying to buy it for himself, personally, like the Belgian Congo? Like he read up on King Leopold and the atrocities and thought "that sounds smart!"
