California restricts welfare benefits

Welfare recipients are no longer going to be able to use their welfare money on medical marijuana, strip clubs, tattoos, psychics, gun shops, cruises, and casinos. CalWORKS cards were being used to withdraw cash in more than half the casinos in the state.

This is outrageous! I can't see the stripper clearly because of my glaucoma.

Calif. welfare recipients can no longer charge psychic readings to state debit card

http://www.news10.net/news/local/sto...storyid=103747

Quote:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneger said welfare recipients can no longer use state-issued debit cards at medical marijuana shops, psychics and other businesses whose services have been deemed "inconsistent with the intent" of the program.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Schwarzenegger sent a letter to county welfare directors Monday announcing that ATMS and point-of-sale card readers in such businesses will be removed from the network that accepts California's Electronic Benefits Transfer cards.

-more-
Other places on the list include bail bond establishments, bingo halls, cruise ships and tattoo parlors.

.................................................. .....
I bet the psychics didn't see that coming.

Yeah, not a big fan of welfare money going to casinos. Lottery tickets are fine though.

Feel good. Their welfare when used to purchase the "proper" items (such as food) will just free up the money they would have used for food to then go to the casino and spend.

This would only make a difference for the completely destitute.

Also, saying that they have been used at over half of the casinos is a poor metric, which I suspect was chosen because it made it seem more rampant.

Kudos for bashing psychics, though.

All it takes is one card, once, per casino. It could be a negligible problem, especially since one might expect if it were rampant for every casino to have many instances of withdrawal.

Now if over half the cards were used to withdraw cash at casinos, that's another ballgame.

In a similar story, Denver soundly defeated the very silly UFO initiative.
