Unlike Australian culture generally, resisting authority does not come "naturally" nor is it accepted with equanimity. Nor does imposing authority when one is not used to doing so. So expecting someone from a usually subjugated strata to effectively impose authority might be a mistake.

Perhaps the outcome would have been different if the jobs had been given to ex-policemen or even ex-school-teachers.
Yes, I was using ethnicity and culture interchangeably, which was awkward of me. Again, and at the expense of being labelled a bigot again, I saw an interview on the news where an Indian security guard working at one of the hotels complained about lack of training and supervision, which is a problem across the board and then said that some quarantined people went to McDonalds and so. My only thought was “it was your job to stop that”.

Okay it just may be that the set of Indian guards (a huge set) and the set of unassertive guards (another huge set, at least in Melbourne) are completely seperate. I don’t believe that, but let’s just go with it.

The problem in Melbourne is unassertive guards, which is why correctional staff are now in these hotels.

And yes ex-Police or school teachers would have worked better. Or, of course, the military.

Despite what others may think, my bile is directed at the decision makers, so it is at Andrew’s feet, which is disappointing as he has handled everything well. The bottom line is that because of the botched hotel security people have died and will continue to die.

It's claimed some of the security guards were bonking the people in isolation: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/new...ectid=12344915

Wouldn't be unheard of.

Yes, that's why it's a dumb strategic decision, and the money should be spent on social programs instead.

No, they are very good at running scare campaigns too. They need to learn how to present a decent policy without reference to other political parties. And be able to stand on their record of achievements.

BTW, Labor took Eden-Monaro. We'll see whether it regains its bellweather status.
