If you keep in mind "it's all about the headlines" than it all makes sense. If Truss's sorry his u-turn gets good headlines then all is fine. The only sin is bad headlines.

Amazing coincidence that the reverse ferrett only happened after all his mates and former work colleagues stopped shorting the pound. It's almost like they agreed a strategy at their super secret meeting ahead of time.

My bingo card didn't have Nadine Dorries calling for a general election

Every year since 1990 the US Public healthcare spending has been greater than the UK as a proportion of GDP. More US Tax goes to healthcare than the UK

5% of our gas comes from Russia. Replacing that from green sources has to be a big vote winner. Why would you not take that option rather than fossil fuels?

Stinks of another dodgy deal to enrich Tory donors and minister's mates.

Notts is going to have the world's first, operational, fusion power plant. Jacob Rees-Mogg announced it, so it must be true

This is your Captain of the ship, Liz Truss speaking. Hi-di-hi-di-hi! Can't hear you! HI-DI-HI-DI-HI!!! What a day. What a week! I’m determined to get us through the tempest. Gale force winds are bellowing. Twenty foot waves are bashing the timbers. My message today is Growth, growth growth! See what I did there? Three word sound bite! <sfx sounds of disruptions> Couple of Greenpeace protesters just lobbed a couple of bombs. I was going to joke about these shipwreckers later! Yes, just like the pound, the ship is sinking, the gilt markets are crashing like the waves, the Petty Officer Kwarteng has thrown the treasure chests over the side to the pirates, the first-class passengers are filling up the life boats - please await your turn and form an orderly queue - peers first, then party members, benefit claimants last and please show two utility bills, your last three months bank statement and last six wage slips - whooooops! Whoops, the ship's just listed way to the left - ah it's OK, Midshipman Mogg has just rebalanced it to starboard. Ship is sinking fast. The waves are restless. The traders biddst the mighty markets deep. It's own appointed limits keep. Do not panic!!! Liz is steering the ship to terra firma. I hope you have a pleasant journey. Please make your way to the upper deck and enjoy the violin concerto now playing 'Nearer my God'... <sfx sound of Truss diving headfirst into the tumultuous brine, hi-viz jacket strapped firmly on>

In the very early 1980s I'd often chat with a pal about his PhD work - researching fusion power funded by the (then) West German government. It was 20 years away, it continues to be 20 years away. I'm not saying it always will be 20 years away but it's certainly too early for this.

He was optimistic, I'd heard it's been 30 years away for the last 50 years.

And, based on a now offline IET article from 2008 break even is the easy part.

With the materials technology of 2008, they were estimating the lifetime of a fusion plant of 18 months due to damage from neutron flux, for example.

Government Growth Plan:
https://assets.publishing.service.go...Accessible.pdf
40 pages of things like this:
Quote:
However, average UK real wage growth has been broadly stagnant for 15 years,2
due in
large part to poor productivity growth. In the twenty years up to the Global Financial Crisis, the
UK’s average annual growth rate was 2.5%; whereas from 2011 to 2019 – the years between
the recessions brought about by the Global Financial Crisis and COVID-19 pandemic – average
growth was just 2%.3
The size of the state has also increased, as people’s reliance on state
support has grown and the population has aged.
3.3 Against this challenging backdrop, our policy priority must be to unleash growth across the
UK: the only sustainable way to raise living standards and fund vital public services.
3.4 The government has successfully boosted growth in the past. Privatisation and liberalisation
of financial services and labour markets in the 70s and 80s, and the increased openness and
reforms to competition in the 90s and early 00s, contributed towards faster growth. Through
bold supply-side reforms, government can facilitate dynamic markets and allow the private
sector to generate long-term prosperity.
3.5 Economic growth is the government’s central mission. The government’s aim is to achieve
a trend growth rate of 2.5%. This will not be easy: it will take a concentrated effort, using every
tool at government’s disposal and requiring each policy and initiative to be measured against a
defining test of whether it helps or hinders growth.
3.6 To do this, the government must cut taxes, streamline the public sector, and liberate the
private sector, by making Britain the place for:
• investment: creating the right conditions and removing barriers to the flow of private capital – whether taxes or regulation
• skilled employment: helping the unemployed into work and those in jobs secure
better paid work
• infrastructure: accelerating the construction of vital infrastructure projects by liberalising the
planning system and streamlining consultation and approval requirements
• home ownership: getting the housing market moving
• enterprise: cutting red tape and freeing business to grow and invest
So screw the environment, and social care, lets have the growth rate of a developing country.

You misheard. They're actually building the world's first confusion power plant. Until now, confusion generation has been rather poor as it's done in an ad hoc piecemeal way: a chancellor here or a PM there generating small amounts of confusion. This will allow the government to automate the process and overwhelm the country in massive quantities of industrial grade confusion.

And before you say "but what about Twitter and Facebook", this is Jacob Rees Mogg. He's never heard of the Internet, never mind social media.

Well at least it's happening during a time of year when we don't need to use the heating and old people aren't especially vulnerable.

Wait...

As a psychiatrist, I am often asked, "Doctor, is there a cure for confusion?"

The simple answer is, it depends on whether it is caused by one of two factors.

The symptoms of the first type include a belief that sovereignty has been 'stolen from us by Brussels' and that 'immigrants are the cause of unemployment, bad housing and the rundown health service'. In advanced cases there may be hallucinations of unicorns and sunlit uplands. This is known as Post-Brexit Bipolar Syndrome, or to give it the medical term: Mogg-Johnson Gammonitis-Brexititis. On no account should the patient drink the Braverman Cool Aid, which is known to cause a fevered imagination and visions of flying machines to Rwanda full of black people and Albanians.

The other syndrome causing confusion is the Kwasi-Growth Syndrome. It presents as a delirious outpouring of Trussonomics, a robotic catatonic state in which the patient utters, 'growth, growth, growth', or alternatively, 'deliver, deliver, deliver'. It is caused by a belief by the deprived working classes that voting Conservative makes you posh and that you, too, can enjoy a middle-class life style if you vote Tory. The only cure is to STOP voting Conservative and vote for a party that represents your own interests.

Confusion will be my epitaph
As we walked a cracked, and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow, we'll be crying.
Crying!
CRY-IIIIIII-IIIIIII- IIIING !!!
Yes, I fear tomorrow we'll be crying.[coda'

Yeah I saw that. When Nadine Dorries is saying you're too far right something has gone horribly wrong.

Not with the Fire Service in its precarious underfunded state with its drivers earning better wages driving HGVs in post-Brexit Britain.

Safer to get a rechargeable LED lantern instead.

Joking aside, when I heard about the possible blackouts, I mentally added a fire extinguisher to my shopping list. We have one, but is rather old now, so may not work.

The house is full of stuff, but we also have a large stash of fire wood.

Transport minister, Conor Burns sacked for serious misconduct. Perhaps he forgot to spit on an RMT worker.

I picked up six this week, trade show giveaways.
Really bright and long lived, USB-C.
Also a bunch of 90Wh power banks.

If the right to existence is conceded to new-born children, then they have the right; if it is not conceded to them, as was the case among the Spartans and ancient Romans, then they do not have it. For only society can give or concede it to them; they themselves cannot take it, or give it to themselves.
