He was optimistic, I'd heard it's been 30 years away for the last 50 years.

And, based on a now offline IET article from 2008 break even is the easy part.

With the materials technology of 2008, they were estimating the lifetime of a fusion plant of 18 months due to damage from neutron flux, for example.

You get something as hot as the Sun and which needs to be that temperature to work... And you use it to make steam.

You misheard. They're actually building the world's first confusion power plant. Until now, confusion generation has been rather poor as it's done in an ad hoc piecemeal way: a chancellor here or a PM there generating small amounts of confusion. This will allow the government to automate the process and overwhelm the country in massive quantities of industrial grade confusion.
