There's allegedly going to be some handwaving masquerading as a speech at 1.30pm.

Carrot Flower King's beloved local Tory MP was on the radio this morning, unable to say Truss would be in charge next week instead saying all are focus on the job of trying to change the national topic of conversation away from Truss's incompetence (bit of paraphrasing on my part). Seems everything they do just highlights it more

Another U-turn. After saying there would be 'no press statement' re the 1922 meeting with Brady and the party chair and Coffey, there is now going to be a press statement in ten minutes time.

Options:
  • Truss resigns - Coffey steps in as Deputy PM
  • Truss and Coffey both resign and 'the gang of four' led by Mordaunt takes over
  • Either of the above plus announcement of General Election (unlikely today)
  • Truss to resign after 31 Oct 2022 and Hunt to stand in
  • Truss driven away, Thatcher-style, face tear stricken and staring ahead
  • A downpour of rain occurs as this happens
  • Larry the cat seen waving goodbye.

Some cack-handed effort at "this lady's not for turning" perhaps?

She's a Poundland politician, and that may be a bit hard on Poundland.

The Grauniad live politics blog is citing Downing Street sources saying Truss will be resigning.

Just call an election and get it over with.

Edit: And it's official, Truss is resigning. Goodness gracious...

quick leadership election, so not even voted by Conservative party members - only Tory MPs.

'mandate' is somehow a distant wish.

Rishi Sunak is still odds-on favourite to be the next PM but I don't see him uniting the party.

To be fair, removing Tory members from the process of picking a PM has to be a system improvement albeit not as good as removing Tory MPs from it as well.

really it's just fun with stats now.

Liz Truss served as PM for a shorter length of time than it took to run the election process that got her there in the first place.

Apparently now is not the time for a General Election according to a Tory MP on Radio 5, it's time to deliver on manifesto promises.

Just in case anyone is in any doubt about exactly how dim Truss is, I have lifted the following from a piece on The Guardian today:

"The current government is widely derided by nature lovers, and sorely lacking environmental credentials. One wildlife ranger has a grim memory of Truss’s visit to their national nature reserve seven years ago, when she was environment secretary. “So tell me truthfully,” she reportedly asked the ranger, surveying marshland filled with rare plants and a sky full of wading birds, “is there more biodiversity in your nature reserve than on a potato field?” Recalling this experience, the ranger is genuinely baffled by her ignorance, exclaiming: “Where do they get these people?” "

OK, I know I'm ahead of the game here what with having an environmental science degree and having worked for conservation groups and local wildlife trusts, but seriously? That is beyond dim...

All this instability has driven the UK to the brink of the abyss. The Tories are going to find a new leader who is not afraid to boldly stride forward from there.

So what do we get now? Rishi Rich or Stolen Valour?

I don't know why journalists are reporting the pound is rising/falling. The important short-term parameter is volatility. An increase of a cent or two for five minutes means absolutely nothing.

If it hadn't been for the queen dying she probably wouldn't have lasted a month.

Spectator is saying:
Tory MPs will choose a new leader next week. Rishi Sunak is the favourite (48%), followed by Penny Mordaunt (25%) and Ben Wallace (10%). Tory members may get an online vote: details remain unclear.

Mortgage interest rates continue to rise....

Quote:
Mortgage rates continued to climb on Thursday, hitting their highest levels in 14 years, figures show.

Average two-and five-year fixed rates jumped to 6.65% and 6.51% respectively as UK borrowing costs remained elevated amid continued economic uncertainty.

One analyst warned mortgages were a "long way" from beginning to come down.

Even with her departure, the markets give Liz Truss yet another vote of confidence.

Quote:
"Overall, the resignation of Truss is a step that needed to happen for the UK government to move further along the path towards restoring credibility in the eyes of the financial markets," said Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63326809

Of course the economic woes aren't down to Liz Truss' policies or more accurately, they're not her policies they're the policies of the ERG - the same folk who brought us the Joys of Brexit,

Liz Truss may have gone, but the ERG and their malign influence on the Conservative Party remain.
