Just for fun.
I just ran a simple computer model of three core columns, one damaged one holding load, and one on the other side undamaged, failure occurs at the weld joint of an unprotected Column at 431.5 C, and the no jolt is possible because the welds fail.
Using the correct weld strength provided to me by another member and structural details of the core, weld failure would lead to core failure and guess what, the theory is easily falsified, can you guess how? |

With just 3 columns, the situation that you're setting up may over-state the stresses in the undamaged columns. This is similar to the very real example of how damage to N columns disables approximately 2N columns. For each damaged column, the mirror image column on the symmetrically opposite side of the column array also has its load greatly reduced, thereby causing the other columns to pick up a much greater load to maintain force equilibrium & moment equilibrium.
When you sum the moments, as required for static equilibrium for 3 columns in a line, if you take out the left-most one, then the right-most one carries no load, and the center one carries 100% of the load. Can you give a better description of your model (inner columns, external columns, floor, spandrels & beams? You might want to try the same analysis using 5, then 7 beams, and look at the trend of the solutions. Just a thought... |

what column welds?
Are you referring to the ends of one column welded to the one above? This was rarely done if I am not mistaken. Columns tend to get smaller and so there is no direct alignment of the faces often. The method used in the twin towers.... I believe was to bolt on plates or perhaps weld them with shim stock... mostly for alignment purposes in fabrication. The column ends were not restrained. If the top column tipped it would more than likely fail the plate or the bolts and or welds. I suspect maybe the same if one column was pushed laterally... the splice would yield before the columns bend. |

Actually the columns were designed to be fillet welded, pre V, and I believe welded with deep penetrating, 6011 welding rods and then x rayed before further work was allowed.
I watched a movie of the towers construction most have never seen, and do not believe a copy of it now exists. I was a failed experiment, during the Carter presidency. |
