We ought not to, but Santos is so bad even a fair number of Republicans find him embarrassing, and in the party of Trump and MTG and Boebert and co. that's saying something.

He's just a different version of Boebert, EmptyG, Jim Jordan and Gaetz. All of then noisy, good-for-nothing grifters.

Certainly, but his lies are more gratuitous and pointless, and picking him out of the crowd creates a nice distraction in which his fellow liars can pretend they're better.

I remember when I was about 6 years old and not feeling very good about myself, I invented an imaginary character who was worse so I could seem better by comparison. It's probably over optimistic to think the great mass of Republicans has reached that level of maturity, but it looks as if Santos is that guy.

I'm going to make the ...very early...prediction that we will have DeSantis and Biden running 2024, and DeSantis wins. Very barely. And the house and senate both go to the Democrats.

Lying, except under oath, is not a crime. It's unethical and often the sign of a mental illness/personality disorder, but not a crime.

Aren't there some sort of rules or laws that say a certified mental patient cannot run for or retain office?

What do you mean by a "certified mental patient"? There are many mental disorders that would not keep someone from performing their duties. OCD, depression, anxiety are all mental disorders that can be treated.

I mean people who belong in a sanitarium for their own good, not out in public.

Being a pathological liar, like Santos, is not grounds for being involuntarily committed to a mental hospital.

Well, here it is really quite hard to commit someone.

https://www.stimmel-law.com/en/artic...ntal%20illness.

Quote:
Adult (patients over 18 years of age): The person's mental condition prevents him/her from being able to provide for food, clothing, and/or shelter, and there is no indication that anyone is willing or able to assist him/her in procuring these needs. This does not necessarily mean homeless, as a homeless person who is able to seek housing (even in a temporary shelter) when weather demands it would not fall under this category.
Note that being a pathologcal liar is not one of the criteria. Not even close. It just makes you a disgusting person one is well to avoid.

There is no such thing, as far as I know, as being "certified" in the USA.

Here in the USA, the vast majority of those people are out. All though whether anyone "belongs" in an institution is arguable.

For the last 50 or more years, involuntary commitment has been pretty rare in the USA and is likely most commonly associated with crimes committed while experiencing mental health episodes.

Santos is not a candidate for involuntary commitment. He may be a candidate for jail, depending on how much violation of campaign finance and other laws he can be convicted of.

In the US you have to be declared a danger to yourself or others to be involuntarily committed. In the short term a licensed mental health professional can order a person detained for 72 hours. After that a court order has to be obtained involving a more thorough evaluation.

A family member or guardian can seek that court ordered involuntary commitment without the initial 3-day hold. The three day hold is when the cops get involved in a acute situation.

Santos' lying appears harmless on its face. The Democrats did a lousy job exposing him during the campaign. There have been a couple reports of him committing financial crimes. He might be charged with those. I have no idea what the status is of those things like check fraud in Brazil, stealing from his roommate and from a charity or his campaign fund or something.

Last Monday Santos announced he will be seeking reelection in 2024.
Quote:
“I’m proud to announce my candidacy to run for re-election and continue to serve the people of NY-3,” Santos said in a statement announcing his candidacy. CNN news link
This provided grist for the late night TV comedy shows, and Bill Maher spoofed Santos with potential campaign posters for his 'run.' Below is the one I liked best.

Apparently we'll find out more tomorrow. The New York Times reports:
Quote:
The specific charges against Mr. Santos, who last month announced he would run for re-election in his district in Long Island and part of Queens [in 2024], are not yet clear. CNN reported that Mr. Santos could appear as soon as Wednesday in federal court. New York Times link
