I guess even covidiots cannot claim these are lockdown deaths?

No, but Swedish authorities recently decided that the more than 10,000 Covid-19 deaths were probably only less than 7,000 corresponding to excess mortality and in line with the idea that the difference of more than 3,000 deaths would then consist of people who would died from something else anyway.

It makes more sense to start the excess deaths count from the day of the year of the first death.

When you do this, you get the following:

In a Tweet, somebody just pointed out that you are more likely to die in a car accident if you are obese, so maybe we should replace the preposition: They die with car accidents!

But that would be the same for every country, so it would not improve the ratio of COVID deaths compared to other countries.

dann, can you tell us something about how the vaccinations proceed in Sweden? Are they on track?

I have noticed that in most countries people complain about vaccination proceedings. In Austria vaccinations have stalled because somebody had forgot to order enough needles!

Meanwhile, because Ivor Patreon Account Cummins has irked me, I've now downloaded *Norway's* weekly death statistics from https://www.ssb.no/en/statbank/list/dode/

This is what other countries should have been aiming for - especially Sweden, with similar advantages of small households and relative wealth.

or cumulative numbers for 2015-2020

I have noticed that in most countries people complain about vaccination proceedings. In Austria vaccinations have stalled because somebody had forgot to order enough needles!

There are problems with delayed reporting in this area, too.
The number 80,000 vaccinations was mentioned a few days ago: Statistik över vaccinerade mot covid-19 (Folkhälsomyndigheten)
Not much in comparison to Denmark's 167,011 vaccinations (2.86% of pop.), but Denmark appears to be #1 in the class of EU countries.

It is impossible to know how Sweden is actually doing when their reporting is such a mess:
- Vi har exakt samma vaccin och volymer i relation till befolkningen. Får vi bara fram vår rapportering kommer vi kunna se att Sverige ligger i topp bland de 10-15 första, säger vaccinsamordnaren Richard Bergström.
- We have the exact same vaccine and volumes in proportion to the population. If only we can get our reporting going, we will be able to see that Sweden is among the 10 to 15 best, says vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been more active in the thread of the Swedish skeptics: Vilka nationella eller regionala åtgärder mot coronavirus är evidensbaserade?
The experience has been much the same as here: The pseudo skeptics have more or less vacated the premises. The first page was all about how Sweden's pandemic response was evidence-based unlike all other countries, in particular Denmark.

More and more Swedes are realizing that Sweden's pandemic strategy may have been exceptional, but not the way they thought. It has been a rude awakening, and many of them are experiencing a cognitive dissonance at the level of U.S. Republicans right now.
There is a TV program tonight at 8 p.m. on Swedish TV: Agenda. PM Löfven, Minister of Social Affairs Hallengren and state epidemiologist Tegnell will be there.

Some countries have had the opposite experience of excess deaths because their coronavirus restrictions also limited the spread of the ordinary flu and other infectious diseases. That might have been the case in Denmark, too, if we had tackled the second wave as soon as it raised its ugly head instead of waiting a couple of weeks. At least, things are starting to look good again, and I don't see any signs of intentions to relax the restrictions for now.

You do know that it has been established as canonical science that Sweden should never be compared with any other country than Belgium, don't you?!

Yes

The numbers are high and they will drop fast because pre flight testing is now mandatory for US and UK and being rolled out for all countries in the next week or so.

* The experts warn that if the mutation gains a foothold in Sweden, it will cause greater strain on the health care system.
* The Public Health Agency will today give new figures on how many cases of this variant have been detected so far.

Hundreds of former medical workers offer help in Västra Götaland (RadioSweden, Jan. 19, 2021)

* A record number of work related incidents and accidents linked to Covid-19 has been reported - an alarming development says Ulrika Scholander at the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
* Last week, there were 484 reports - more than any other week during the pandemic.
* Most reports are from health and social care, but more are coming other sectors like schools and stores.

* Gunnar Enlund, a senior doctor at the Akademiska hospital in Uppsala who works with the preoperative register says he's never seen such a decline.
* "Should we be able to operate and catch up, we should increase our capacity by about 10 percent and then it would take 20 months," he tells Swedish Radio News.
Pandemic halts more than 91,000 medical operations last year (RadioSweden, Jan. 15, 2021)

Tuesday, Jan. 12: 17,395 - deaths 234

It s probably too early for the new restrictions to have impacted the pandemic in Sweden, so the lowered number of new cases may be due to the Xmas holidays.

ETA:
Quote:
Cases continue to decline, reflecting I believe the Christmas break and new restrictions. Note that testing is also significantly down, but as testing is primarily demand driven, lower demand likely reflects fewer cases.

Denmark - lowest number of new cases since October:
724 er bekræftet smittet med coronavirus (EB.dk, Jan. 19, 2021)
724 confirmed new coronavirus infections
But:
Rekordmange smittede plejehjemsbeboere døde i sidste uge
A record number of infected nursing-home residents died last week (EB.dk, Jan. 19, 2021)
They should all have been vaccinated more than a week ago, but very few have received the second vaccination yet.

I thought that they had finally started wearing face masks on public transport in rush-hour traffic, but that is still not the case:
Packade bussar i morgonrusningen – men få använder munskydd (SVT.se, Jan. 20, 2021)
Crowded busses during morning rush hour – but few passengers are wearing face masks
And it is still only a recommendation.

And this is how they celebrate being vaccinated in nursing homes:
Quote:
I don't know how you do it in other countries but in Sweden we bunch the elderly together without masks straight after the vaccination to celebrate with champagne.

Sob.

One of the first things I learned to tell clients, as a young vet, was "go on keeping him away from other dogs and places where other dogs might have been for two weeks after his second vaccination." It's not rocket science.

Interesting article by a Swedish anthropologist working at the Oslo University:
Quote:
It should be noted, in any case, that Tegnell has rejected the accusation that the FoHM was indeed pursuing herd immunity. According to the FoHM, herd immunity could be seen rather as “an outcome, not an aim” of the national strategy. In October last year, Tegnell condemned herd immunity without a vaccine as “futile and immoral”, and in November he acknowledged in a press conference that immunity levels were lower than expected.

It is therefore odd that UK newspaper Sunday Times revealed that, in September 2020, Tegnell, together with Oxford epidemiologists professor Sunetra Gupta and professor Carl Heneghan, sat in a meeting with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, to convince Johnson not to impose a national lockdown. Gupta is one of the main signatories of the Great Barrington Declaration, which suggests that governments should allow Covid-19 to run through the majority of the population, who will supposedly have only very minor symptoms, while shielding the most vulnerable members of society.
Covid-19, Nordic trust and collective denial: Sweden and Norway compared (CoronaTimes, Jan. 21, 2021)

Quote:
* Sweden has adjusted its line for upper secondary schools, allowing them to have a mix of remote and in-person learning until the end of March.
* Going forward, some campuses in areas where the spread of the virus remains high may stay closed, but others can reopen.
* At the same time, the government renewed most of its existing measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Government allows mix of remote and in-person learning for high schools (RadioSweden, Jan. 21, 2021)

That first article is fascinating. And the very idea that these fanatics were trying to influence Johnson (who is known for simply seeking some justification for what he wants to do anyway) not to impose a lockdown when England was clearly heading for the rocks is appalling.

Giesecke and Tegnell will do anything to make Sweden look good in comparison, I think. Like when they are offended by other Nordic countries closing their borders to Swedish travelers.

And protecting the elderly in particular while the disease was spreading in the less vulnerable population in order to build herd immunity was supposed to be the Swedish strategy ...

The percentage of Danes who want to get vaccinated has now grown from 76 in December to 87 now. The percentage of skeptics has dropped from 11 to 5.

The percentage of B.1.1.7. of all cases is rising: 7% of positive tests in week 2. In week one, it was 4.1%. But the number of new cases is dropping enough to keep up.

Now I feel cheated! My computer didn't warn me at all! Nothing happened, but still ...

By the way, a Swedish professor of infectious diseases, Anders Björkman, is very fond of comparisons with Norway. He is trying to sell the idea that the obvious difference in death toll had nothing to do with different strategies and everything to do with the R0 being bigger in Sweden, for some reason.

Don't you know... Sweden is utterly different from other Scandinavian countries and should be compared to Belgium, the UK, and... Peru, according to the latest tweet I've seen.

I do wonder if they forget that Denmark has quite a high population density.
