I'm not. I grew up in Country Durham and saw how hard the closure of mining, steel making and other heavy industry hit the region and the huge damage done to individuals, families and communities.
The Nissan factory is a source of highly skilled, relatively highly paid employment in the area and when the supply chain, and the general economic impact is considered is a huge economic boost to the area. If it were to close, the area would be kicked back 40-odd years and another generation could find itself on the scrap heap. I take no joy from that prospect. YMMV. ![]() |

Maybe the good people of Sunderland now realise the consequences of what they voted for. They want out of Europe. They've got it. However, if cars do not have a CE certification they cannot export to EU countries - and Nissan is a big seller - without a great deal of expense and the payment of tariffs. I will not be buying a British car for that reason. Parts might now be difficult to obtain due to the withdrawal from standardisation.
You can't blame Nissan. They have to make a profit if they are to be a going concern. Next time, people of Sunderland: be careful what you wish for! |

Without his scientific advisors, Matt Hancock's half-hour looked more like a party political deathcast on behalf of the trying to save Boris Johnson's arse party.

I've not managed to read it all yet, but the highlights are fun.
https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/und...eals-big-tech/ "‘unprecedented’ transfer of personal health information of millions of NHS users to these private tech firms. " "Significantly, the contracts reveal that the Dominic Cummings-linked firm Faculty is being paid more than Ł1m to provide AI services for the NHS." |

They set up factories in Europe, generally speaking. The EU is a trading blcok. Anything outside the EU is subject to tariffs.
Cars coming into the EU outside the bloc pay substantial tariffs. Off the top of my head €1,200 per car, which is passed on to the customer as increased price. The car market is extremely price sensitive so you'll find the best selling models are often the cheapest, for example, the Dacia Duster. |

Whoa! Are you saying that anyone with a Jewish name is not allowed to be a conservative? Many Jews with German, Polish, Spanish, even Arabic sounding names have been in the UK for generations, even in the case of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain hundreds of years ago.
Likewise, here in Finland, Scottish names such as Finlayson, Fazer, Ramsey and Douglas are surprisingly common because they came over as military centuries ago. There is NOTHING in a name that guarantees nationality. ETA: So this guy's Polish born. So what?

And has been explained many times before, as an EU member we can certify cars etc as being EU compliant. When we leave the transition period we become a 3rd country and can no longer certify so goods have to be inspected as there is no legitimate paperwork to certify them.

Not every item has to be inspected. The product has to be designed, built, and (sometimes depending on the product) samples have to be tested to ensure compliance. After that, only random samples are inspected. Surely you don't think there are a team of EU inspectors checking every single toaster, iPhone, TV, and clock imported to the EU from, say, China.

So according to the papers, Johnson signed this “unfair” deal.
He presented this deal as a a triumph he had managed to squeeze out of the EU. He described this deal as “oven ready” and it was the entire basis of the “Get Brexit Done” election slogan. Now he is going to 'fix' this unfair deal the EU forced on us? |

If Boris Johnson ever finds out that it was Boris Johnson who struck the deal that Boris Johnson says is unfair then Boris Johnson will be in big trouble with Boris Johnson.

Matt Hancock will be telling us later, 'We are ramping things up, straining every sinew and overturning every stone to do the right thing at the right time by following the science.

It's obtaining that CE compliance certificate that is the hard part.
Boris Johnson has already said he does not want to hold the UK to EU standards as he wants things to be open to other standards (for example the USA). Nissan said three years ago that it might move out of the UK as it is not economically viable for them to go through exports aggro. |
