Best thing the US can do is just keep out of it. A lot of people who would be happy to see the current regime go would not be happy it it was replaced by people seen to be in the employ of the US.
There's also an element of this:

Yeah, it's already Somalia. Countries can hang in that failed state for quite some time.

I don't know. Zimbabwe hasn't had one yet. One of the challenges with such kleptocratic mismanagement is that they so devastate the country that people have few resources with which to mount any opposition. The worse things get, the weaker potential opponents of the regime become.

It wouldn't shock me if civil war breaks out, but I'd actually put the odds of that within the next 10 year well below 50%.

Mass emigration works well for this as well. In the case of Zimbabwe 1/3 of population fled. South Africa under ANC carries a solid portion of the blame, because they allowed the emigrees to work in South Africa and send remittances back home as a way to help Mugabe.

Venezuelan population is three times larger than Zimbabwe though. It won't be as easy. On the other hand many already left back in 2003, this is just the second wave.

Unless something is fixed soon - and I don't see how it would be - the country will become (remain?) a failed state.

It's not a failed state. Maduro has his own death squads. Failed states don't get those.

Thanks to stunning inflation, it now takes 1 million bolivars to buy a cup of coffee in a Venezuelan cafe, Bloomberg reports. That's one-fifth of Venezuela's monthly minimum wage, and a 10,000-bill stack of Venezuela's most common bank note, the 100-bolivar bill.

In other words, the glorious Bolivarian revolution has led to a rapid expansion of the millionaire class.

Venezuela’s oil production plunged by another 47,500 barrels per day (bpd) in June, compared to a month earlier. An exodus of workers and field shut downs were reported for the month, pointing to a grim near-term future that could see total production dip below 1 million barrels per day (mb/d) by the end of the year.

According to OPEC’s secondary sources, Venezuela’s output fell to 1.34 mb/d in June, which, aside from a brief interruption of output due to a strike in 2002-2003, puts production at its lowest point in nearly seven decades.

Where are they going to get the money to quadruple their oil production? That would mean massive investment to facilities, but they have neither money nor credit.

Yeah, but the reason they don't have money or credit is because the mean capitalist dogs are freezing them out, so it's not really their fault.

I think Maduro's being too hard on himself and his comrades. It's virtually impossible to run an efficient economy with so much Yankee sabotage and whatnot.

Serious question: if they were to try and “denationalize” the oil production and give it over to oil companies to increase production, would any oil company actually touch them with the potential that they might seize it again when things stabilize? Or would the lure of all that oil be enough to tempt some companies?

If it were me I wouldn't trust that they wouldn't re-nationalize down the road, and Maduro has been prosecuting oil executives for corruption in questionable ways, so it's not just a matter of losing money.

But that's me. Who knows how Exxon thinks? Or whomever.

Massive blackout affects 70% of Venezuela.

Maduro evidently survived a “drone attack” That he blames on far right elements and the president of Colombia. The version of the story in my dead tree newspaper says that firemen claimed it was a gas tank in an apartment that exploded. CNN did not mention this online.

This proves Maduro is a hero of the people being oppressed by outside forces, well that's what he wants people to think anyway.

Have the existence of the alleged drones been proved? There were also stories of gas canisters exploding.

As human right is always something given, it always in reality reduces to the right which men give, "concede," to each other. If the right to existence is conceded to new-born children, then they have the right; if it is not conceded to them, as was the case among the Spartans and ancient Romans, then they do not have it. For only society can give or concede it to them; they themselves cannot take it, or give it to themselves.

Some independent US research group confirmed that the drone and explosion were real and happened close to Maduro, or at least near the parade.

Forget what they are called, I saw it on TV last night.

Obviously, the attack still could have been stage-managed.
