How 9/11 led the US to forever wars, eroded rights – and insurrection

Interesting article in The Guardian today relevant to this thread, which in turn quotes this from a US author:

Quote:
Spencer Ackerman, the author of Reign of Terror: How the 9/11 Era Destabilized America and Produced Trump, argues that the amorphous “war on terror” supercharged and institutionalised enduring strands of white supremacism running through US political history.

Ackerman, a former Guardian journalist, contrasts the political response to the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, by the white supremacist Timothy McVeigh, to the al-Qaida plane hijacking attacks six years later.

In the Oklahoma case, Republicans in Congress disputed any suggestion of wider complicity of the far right. To the extent anti-terror legislation was strengthened, it was directed against foreign groups. Patriotism was identified with whiteness.

One of the most important lessons of the war on terror is that a white man with a flag and a gun is told by the culture of the war on terror that he is a counter-terrorist, not a terrorist,” said Ackerman, adding that a direct line can be drawn between the war on terror and the 6 January pro-Trump insurrection in Washington.

“You can see from the iconography of who is in that crowd, who’s storming the Capitol,” Ackerman said. “There are a lot of people in hard-knuckle gloves and tactical gear basically cosplaying as the warriors that the war on terror and its media portrayals convinced them is the mark of valorous American behavior.”
Indeed.

On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, former Presidents Clinton and Bush, the former First Ladies and President Biden, the First Lady, and VP Harris and the First Gentleman all attended memorials to show their respect to those who died. Where are Trump and Melania? Mar a Lago. Donnie is probably playing golf before being so 'presidential' by being a wrestling match commentator tonight.

Trump used the anniversary to blast Biden for his own political benefit which comes as a surprise to no one:

Quote:
“The leader of our country was made to look like a fool, and that can never be allowed to happen. It was caused by bad planning, incredible weakness and leaders who truly didn’t understand what was happening,” Trump argued in a video shared by his Save America PAC.

“This is the 20th year of this war and should have been a year of victory and honor and strength. Instead, Joe Biden and his inept administration surrendered in defeat,” Trump said.
Quote:
While Trump addressed 9/11 and those who died in his video on Saturday, he spent the majority of the recording railing against the Afghan withdrawal, arguing that the U.S. “will struggle to recover from the embarrassment this incompetence has caused.”
The irony of Trump accusing another president of causing embarrassment and being incompetent burns like lye.

UPDATE: Trump caught in another lie:

Quote:
Trump told Fox News Friday he would travel to Manhattan, New York City, Saturday to pay his respects at the site of the World Trade Center.

He was expected to visit Ground Zero at around 1:30pm, local law enforcement officials told the New Jersey Globe, after being informed of the plans by the Secret Service.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...en-leaves.html

It's now 4:15 in NYC and Trump has not been to Ground Zero.

Quote:
Mr. Trump was in New York City, his spokeswoman said, but was not planning to visit ground zero.

“He had the option to attend but decided to honor the day with different stops,” his spokeswoman, Liz Harrington, said.
Quote:
Mr. Trump spoke at the Police Department’s 17th Precinct station house in East Midtown on Saturday, near Trump Tower, where he delivered campaign-style remarks and criticized Mr. Biden’s handling of the pullout from Afghanistan. He was also expected to virtually address Let Us Worship, an evangelical event at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., around 6:50 p.m., Ms. Harrington said. And he was set to provide commentary for a pay-per-view boxing match in Hollywood, Fla.

Especially since he was the "mastermind" of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This is hysterical! Speaking of false news, for the SECOND time, right wing Newsmax was tricked into interviewing a fake Paul Wolfowitz. Tom Basile interviewed "Wolfowitz", a man he claims to know, without realizing he was being punked. "Wolfowitz" spent the entire almost 12 minute interview saying what a waste of time and money was spent on an unwinnable war and that the $2 trillion would have been better spend on infrastructure in the US. He continues to describe how bad our schools, roads, healthcare system, and drug addiction are and that, without Afghanistan to fight, we had nothing to be proud of. Basile didn't seem to realize that he wasn't interviewing the real Wolfowitz for the entire time and some of the looks on his face as "Wolfowitz" basically says the exact opposite of what Basile expected/wanted are priceless. Enjoy!

In the article, Trump boasted that he made the Korean peninsula safer:

Quote:
In his speech, Donald Trump also took the opportunity to take credit for improving the security situation on the Korean peninsula.

“Looking back today, it’s easy to forget how dangerous the situation was when I was elected,” Trump said.

“Missiles are flying, nuclear weapons are being tested, and powerful threats are being released every day.”

“Under my leadership, the United States has adopted a policy of unprecedented force,” Trump said.
Well, he certainly stopped those missiles from flying!

Ballistic Missile Launch Near Japan Pushes Tensions With North Korea
March 25, 2021

Quote:
North Korea claims it successfully test-fired new types of long-range cruise missiles on Sept. 11 and 12, according to the country's state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Quote:
A month before the U.S. presidential election, North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, held a military parade that featured what appeared to be the country’s largest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile. This week, just days before President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s inauguration, the North Korean dictator held another parade, showing off a new submarine-launched ballistic missile
.
Quote:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/15/w...ile-biden.html
The timing of the two flashy exhibitions has drawn attention to the diplomatic freeze between the two countries. In North Korea, Mr. Biden is inheriting a rival whose nuclear ambition is bolder and more dangerous than it was four years ago, when President Barack Obama left office.

The parades underscored that North Korea has been silently ramping up its nuclear capability for years, even as President Trump claimed that his top-down, personality-driven diplomacy with Mr. Kim meant the North was “no longer a nuclear threat.”

“If anything, the North’s nuclear threat has only grown,” said Yun Duk-min, a former chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy in Seoul. “The military parade is evidence.”

Nah. That doesn't make sense in context:

It sounds like he's trying to take credit for what the Moons have one...which, incidentally, is not true. The Moonies are a religious cult and they certainly haven't achieved anything except grift from suckers. No wonder they support Trump. They admire him like he admires Putin.

Simpler explanation was what he was supposed to use was some other word entirely and he just misread it or just used the first word that popped in that cavity between his ears.

I just heard a Trump supporting couple interviewed in DC. They believe those arrested on Jan. 6 are 'political prisoners' , it was all a set up, and that the 'speedy trials' are proof of that. Trouble is, They also claimed that the only person there who was killed was a Republican and that she was 'murdered'. They basically repeated all the right wing lies about Jan. 6 that you hear on such...ahem...'credible' sources as Newsmax, OANN, Tucker C, etc.

As far as I've been able to find, the only people sentenced so far have pleaded guilty and that no one has been tried. These idiots are also unaware or ignoring that one person was trampled to death, didn't mention the officers who died/committed suicide or were seriously injured and needed surgery (sometimes more than one), or that the officer who shot Ashli Babbitt was exonerated of any wrong doing (but I bet they condemn BLM and say they support the police).

I suspect there is enough material after four years of his failed presidency to string enough cuts together to make a feature length movie release. Not sure what one would call it though. 'A Stable Genius' ?

Do you remember when democracy was saved by Pence? How, on January 6 he finally decided to stand up to Trump and say "enough is enough"?

Well, turns out that reality was a little different... Pence (a.k.a. Racist Bannon) was actually thinking of blocking the certification, and the person we have to thank for saving democracy is actually Mr. Potato, former VP Dan Quayle.

From: The Independent
Former vice president Dan Quayle has emerged as an unlikely hero in the saga of the plot to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election....Pence asked Mr Quayle, George HW Bush’s former vice president, if there was any way he could stop the results of the 2020 Presidential election from being certified...Quayle told him: “Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away.”

By the way, according to Trump, America will be destroyed by 2024.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-tr...002940784.html

Donald Trump Predicts America Will End Within 3 Years

How’s this for a paradox? Donald Trump is predicting America will end in three years and is also hinting that he may run for office in 2024 ― three years from now.

...

After Trump said “our country has gone really downhill in the last eight months like nobody’s ever seen before,” he suggested, without offering any proof, that the country will end.

“And you go to these elections coming up in ’22 and ’24 — we’re not going to have a country left,” Trump said. “The election was rigged, and we’re not going to have a country left in three years, I’ll tell you that.”

...

Trump avoided a direct answer but promised Spicer he would be happy with the decision and also claimed America is now “a laughingstock.”

...

1. Does this idiot have any other way of describing things other than "like nobody's ever seen before" or a variation of that?

2. I'd put Biden's first eight months in office up against Trump's first eight any day of the week.
Quote:
Jan. 21, 2017: Women’s March, ‘largest audience’
Largest protest march on record at the time.

Jan. 27, 2017: First travel ban on Muslims.

Jan. 28, 2017: Hanging up on Australia, hiring Bannon

Jan. 30, 2017: Firing Yates, rescinding regulations
Trump fires acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she refuses to defend the travel ban, arguing it is unconstitutional. (It was.)

Feb. 13, 2017: Firing Flynn. But later claiming he's "a great man" and pardoning him.

Feb. 14, 2017: Comey meeting
In a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office, Trump asks FBI Director James Comey to shut down an investigation into Flynn, saying “I hope you can let this go.”

March 4, 2017: Wiretap tweet
Trump accuses former President Obama of tapping his phones during the election, calling him a “bad (or sick) guy.” The Justice Department later says there is no evidence of this.

May 4, 2017: Rose Garden
Trump brings House Republicans to the Rose Garden to celebrate passage of a bill repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act. (later defeated)

May 8, 2017: Two scoops
Trump hosts TIME correspondents at a private dinner in the White House in which he is served two scoops of ice cream, while everyone else gets one. This becomes a meme.

May 9, 2017: Firing Comey
Trump fires Comey, arguing that he mishandled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server and alleging that he told Trump he was not under investigation.

May 10, 2017: Russia meeting
Trump meets with the Russian Foreign Minister Ambassador to the U.S. in the Oval Office, reportedly revealing highly classified information, calling Comey “a real nut job” and criticizing the FBI investigation. “I faced great pressure because of Russia,” he says. “That’s taken off.”

May 12, 2017: Comey tapes
Trump tweets that Comey “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations” before leaking to the press. “Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” Comey later tells a Senate committee. More than a month later, Trump admits he does not have any tapes.

May 25, 2017: The brush-off
During a meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels, Trump appears to brush aside the Montenegrin prime minister for a group photo. Video of the moment goes viral.

May 31, 2017: Covfefe
Shortly after midnight, Trump tweets: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” to the world’s bewilderment. He deletes the tweet in the morning.

June 1, 2017: Paris climate deal
In a speech from the Rose Garden, Trump says he will withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate deal: “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

July 8, 2017: Russian adoption
On board Air Force One, Trump personally dictates a misleading statement in which Donald Trump Jr. claimed a 2016 meeting with a Kremlin-connected lawyer was about adoption.

Aug. 15, 2017: ‘Some very fine people’
During an event on infrastructure in the lobby of Trump Tower, Trump argues that white nationalists who marched in Charlottesville, Va., included “some very fine people.”

Aug. 25, 2017: Arpaio pardon
Trump pardons controversial former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had been convicted of criminal contempt over his hard-line tactics on undocumented immigrants.

Fascism creeps on, and too many people are unwilling to face the reality of what might be necessary to stop it.

Republicans, most especially Trump supporters, are more likely than Democrats to believe that "democracy is under attack". The irony in this burns more than a 5 alarm fire. But the majority of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, believe that it is being tested at the very least. This is according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

Quote:
A majority of Americans -- 56% -- think American democracy is under attack.

That revelation from a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS reflects the views of three-quarters of Republicans, half of independents and a little fewer than half of Democrats.
Perhaps even more troubling than those numbers is how much confidence in the US system has fallen since earlier this year.

A narrow majority -- 52% -- say they lack confidence that American elections reflect the will of the people, up from 40% who felt that way in January. That's true even among Democrats, 90% of whom were confident in January that elections reflected the will of the people. Now it's a little more than two-thirds.
And large portions of Americans across the political spectrum think it's very or somewhat likely that elected officials in the next few years will overturn the results of a US election their party did not not win -- 49% of Democrats, 48% of independents and 57% of Republicans.

Why is this happening?

Concern about the state of US democracy is, in fact, coming from a number of different places tied to the aftermath of 2020, with many of former President Donald Trump's supporters falsely believing the election was stolen, and many of his opponents alarmed by the attempts to overturn legitimate results.

The most obvious reason for concern that a politician will overturn election results is that Trump tried very hard to do it himself.

The constant metronomic beat from Republican lawmakers, particularly at the state level, is that elections need to be secured, despite a lack of evidence of fraud, and that Democratic efforts to make it easier to vote are a power grab.
This is the true legacy of Donald Trump and the cowardly and lying GOP. This, and his mishandling of Covid, will be what he will be remembered for in the history books. He's come closer to destroying this country than anyone since the Civil War. He makes Nixon look like a choir boy.

They have become VERY familiar with it from 2015 to 2020. So familiar that it has become the norm for them. So any competent person sounds...different.

Gunz & creeps ensure no innocent can sleep

Funny how this fascist murderer hasn't made much of a news splash. Imagine if a Trump supporter were, say, refused a lollipop for wearing a MAGA hat, let alone killed for it. Check out his appropriate American Taliban vibe:

Reading that report indicates that in a normal society he would have been dealt with LONG before anything like that happened.

Obviously he doesn't stand out from the crowd in Texas. Took them a year to arrest him...
