“I think the best term for them is authoritarian,” says historian Robert Paxton, the author of Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, 1940-1944. “It doesn’t act like a fascist regime because traditionally elites have to give way, and in authoritarianism they retain power. But all the foreign Jews were put into camps, they cracked down on dissent, and it was in some ways increasingly a police state.”

Pétain wanted to return to a more conservative mode of life, and to that end there were strong prohibitions against divorce, abortion was made a capital offense, the press was censored, phone calls were monitored and critics of the government were imprisoned.
Sounds much more like Trump's desired view (except for the prohibition against divorce) of the US and DeSantis is a Trump wannabe.

And that paradise would (will???) be extolled by all the little Trumpers as "Great" and "free" because the *right* sort of people have their necks under the heel of the State.

Happened a lot more in the early days of the forum, when there were sometimes a thousand or more members all on here at once.

A Michigan Republican said he tells his daughters to “lie back and enjoy it” if rape is inevitable.

Robert “RJ” Regan, who is running for a state House seat, made the comments on a Sunday Facebook livestream hosted by a conservative group.

The Kent County candidate — who won a four-way special election to snag the Republican nomination for the seat last week — also recently said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a “fake war just like the fake pandemic.”

His comments came a year after he shared a series of anti-Semitic social media posts, according to The Times of Israel.

Well, after all, since the body has a way of preventing pregnancy in a rape, why not?

He sounds like the perfect Republican candidate these days: misogynist, bigot, pro-Putin, Covid-19 denier, Rigged Election promoter, and a liar. After getting criticized for the 'rape' comment he attempted to do damage control by lying:

"Regan told "Your Defending Fathers" the point of his rape comment was to demonstrate the grassroots of the GOP is "sick and tired of the establishment telling us, 'You just have to sit there and take it.'"

"Just lie there and enjoy it," Regan said. "This is the way this is going to be. And I used the example: 'That would be like if I told my three daughters that rape is inevitable and you should just lie back and enjoy it.'"

But that's not what he actually said which was:

"Having three daughters, I tell my daughters, well, 'If rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it. That's not how we roll. That's not how I won this election. We go right at it."

There is no "like if" in that video statement.

Quote:
The condemnation preceded new revelations about Regan, including videos he posted online last year that featured Dr. Anthony Fauci next to a noose, suggesting COVID-19 vaccines were part of a planned government "genocide" and endorsing the widely debunked QAnon conspiracy theory.

The Grand Rapids resident, who scored an upset win last week in a special primary election for the solidly Republican 74th District in west Michigan, has also called the Ukraine war a “fake war just like the fake pandemic” and shared a meme claiming that feminism is “a Jewish program to degrade and subjugate white men.”

In other social media posts, Regan shared conspiracy theories claiming that Jewish people were behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and presidential assassinations [Lincoln and Kennedy] and control the banks as well as the media.

Quote:
Robert Regan, the GOP-backed nominee for a Michigan state House seat, used the right-wing video site Rumble to endorse the killings of President Joe Biden, Prime Ministers Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand and Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, among others.

Regan has also frequently shared right-wing media-fueled conspiracy theories on social media, including advising people to “study” and “apply” QAnon to their lives like they do with the Bible, and falsely claiming that Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman “staged” his famous face down with insurrectionists inside the Capitol on January 6.

Even Robert Regan's own daughter urges people NOT to vote for her father:

Quote:
In the viral tweet, which has racked up more than 159,000 likes in the past two days, Stephanie Regan, the daughter of Republican state House candidate Robert Regan, writes, “If you’re in Michigan and 18+ pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad for state rep. Tell everyone.”

In a pair of tweets the day after, Stephanie wrote that her father was Robert Regan and called on voters to research his campaign, writing: “I don’t feel safe rn sharing further information regarding his beliefs, but please look him up and just read for yourself.”

Keep in mind the crowded field is partially responsible for his victory.

If you had 3 other candidates running and their all three bog standard republicans, the nuttiest candidate has a much better chance. There's other issues too, off course. Only the most motivated voters(read extreme) vote in primaries, etc.

Edit, this race really highlights one of the big problems with US politics.

He got about 33% of the vote from about 8000 people that showed up representing about 90k residents.

And yet you can bet he'll beat the Democrat because a misogynistic, bigoted, antisemitic, lying, Pro-Putin, Covid 19 denying, nut case Republican is better than a sane Democrat. Sad.

Keep in mind, its a district of 90k people, somewhere around 70k of which aren't going to pay any attention to the election until less than a month before it happens.

They won't know he's a misoynistic, bigoted, antisemitic, lying, pro-putin, covid 19 denier. And they won't believe dems because dems have been saying most of that about every Republican that has run for office since the 80s.

Why don't the Dems get smart and put this POS on their ticket? Then he will get next to zero votes. Yes, another GOPer will probably win, but at least it won't be this waste-of-oxygen.

I can not only hope it doesn't happen, it seems to me the cult/army of Dump is not big enough to do anything more than guerrilla war sabotage.

What can happen, unfortunately, if enough people don't come out to vote, is take over Congress.

....

That is what the writer is predicting, not a repeat of the Civil War. But a guerrilla war can do plenty of damage for a long time, especially with the support of a substantial percentage of the population, as seems likely.
Quote:
What we’re heading toward is an insurgency, which is a form of a civil war. That is the 21st-century version of a civil war, especially in countries with powerful governments and powerful militaries, which is what the United States is. And it makes sense. An insurgency tends to be much more decentralized, often fought by multiple groups. Sometimes they’re actually competing with each other. Sometimes they coordinate their behavior. They use unconventional tactics. They target infrastructure. They target civilians. They use domestic terror and guerrilla warfare. Hit-and-run raids and bombs. We’ve already seen this in other countries with powerful militaries, right? The IRA took on the British government. Hamas has taken on the Israeli government. These are two of the most powerful militaries in the world. And they fought for decades. And in the case of Hamas I think we could see a third intifada. And they pursue a similar strategy.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/magaz...-this-country/

ETA: There's also this:
Quote:
REDDING, Calif. — The far right is rising in the ranchland of Northern California, using special elections and veiled intimidation to spread political influence across a historically conservative region of this deeply liberal state.

The movement is rooted here in Shasta County and includes the support of a roughly decade-old militia. The gains it has achieved have come at the expense of moderate Republicans, who for generations fit the small-government, light-regulation ethic that guided political life here.

No longer.

The combination of California’s pandemic-prompted mask regulations and President Donald Trump’s reelection loss have fused together a conservative group of angry mothers, militia leaders and disaffected Republicans adrift in a blue state. Trumpists are voting out Trumpists. Veteran Republican politicians are seeing their terms cut short.

In the latest idiocy emanating from Donnie T:

Quote:
In an email sent to supporters Thursday, Trump said the inflation "mess" in the United States would not be happening if Republican leadership took action on alleged election fraud in the presidential race in that state and elsewhere. The email was in response to the ongoing Wisconsin investigation into the state's results in the 2020 election.

"Our country would not be in the mess it's in if Republicans had the courage to act," Trump wrote, referring to decertification of the election results in Wisconsin and other states. "We would be energy independent, no inflation, the Ukraine desecration would not be happening, our economy would be strong, there would have been no surrender in Afghanistan, and so much else."
And everyone would have a magical, flying unicorn if Trump were president!

This might be somewhat relevant for this thread -

Revealed: Texas threw out abnormally high number of votes in March primary

Quote:
Texas threw out mail votes at an abnormally high rate during the US’s first primary election of 2022, rejecting nearly 23,000 ballots outright under tougher voting rules that are part of a broad campaign by Republicans to reshape American elections, according to an analysis by the Associated Press.

Roughly 13% of mail ballots returned in the 1 March primary were discarded and uncounted across 187 counties in Texas. While historical primary comparisons are lacking, the double-digit rejection rate would be far beyond what is typical in a general election, when experts say anything above 2% is usually cause for attention.

<snip>

In Texas, a state Donald Trump easily won although by a smaller margin than 2016, the trouble of navigating new rules was felt in counties big and small, red and blue. But the rejection rate was higher in counties that lean Democratic (15.1%) than Republican (9.1%).
I'd say that that's waaaay more blatant than usual, but sadly unsurprising for the current GOP.

it seems that dialing back on your "bat-**** crazy" is grounds for losing Trump's support. I think that someday soon this might be a good thing even for the alt-right.

Of course it is. Trump demands unwavering and sycophantic loyalty from his cultist followers. But he gives none in return. Trump's a snake and everyone else is just the frog.

Note: This link is not verified news reporting, just what seems to be a sigh of relief.

Iowa's "Let's make being a librarian illegal" bill dies during funnel week.

This seems like it could have some relevance...

Republican Senator calls for the Supreme Court to re-allow bans on interracial marriage

The headline sums it up fairly well, really. Indiana Republican Sen. Mike Braun, for reference, and State's Rights!

If these "States' Rigbts" advocates would have their way, it would be even more of a Dis-United States of America that it already is.

America really needs the kind of shock Ukraine is now enduring in order to make the "United" in its name have meaning again.

What was amusing was to see Braun's attempts to back peddle on his statement.

Paul Manafort must be really stupid:

Of course one might consider anyone who advised Trump do do anything but jump off a high building to be stupid by definition, but one does wonder at this. I mean, this wasn't an expired passport, it was a revoked one, and although I've never experienced that, I am guessing that when your passport is revoked someone tells you. Then again, maybe it just never occurred to him that some people in government positions (such as the TSA Guy who checks your passport) actually do their jobs right.

Even desperate and scared, though, you have to admit trying to get on an international flight with a bum passport is pretty damned stupid.

I hear there are a few superyachts and the like not going much of anywhere special these days, and I'd have thought of all people Mr. Manafort would know whom to call for a ride.

my guess is that those people "had Manafort contacted", demanding that he use whatever connections he still has to Trump-GOP to get their money to safety - or else. Russian oligarchs lost a lot of money to Manafort with little ROI - and now they have even more to lose.
Manafort knows better than to accept an invitation to a Russian's yacht.
