New nickname: iSKEP?
I used to be able to reference the forum name in 4 letters. I'd like to have better "branding" on the name of the new site. For years now I have been telling people about a site on the Internet where personal attacks are taboo, people are called on their flaws in logic and evidence-based arguments are respected. In my limited experience I can identify 3 kinds of forums:
- those that quickly devolve into personal insults - those with such a benign culture that moderators aren't needed - those so tightly monitored that dissent is instantly quashed My search is by no means exhaustive, but still, a forum with a culture of civility, fairly lightly moderation and a strong bias toward evidence-based argument is such a rare bird that I frequently mention its existence to friends. ISKEP, iSkep, I-SKEP would all be convenient brand names. Googling these I do find unrelated items - INSKEP is a word in Afrikaans, ISKEP is someone's online user name - so I'm not wed to these suggestions. However a short, phonetic nickname would help the new brand, IMO. |

I don't i-anything. The association with Apple is onerous.
ISF has seemed to work for most people here. I'd go with IntSkep, but then we have those folks in the UK and former colonies who insist on the sceptic spelling. ISF by default. Call it what you want and it'll take on legs of its own if people like it. (JREF was/is only a well-known acronym for a very small subset of humanity. I don't think it's that big an issue for us, frankly.) |

I used to be able to tell people to type the old acronym into a search engine. Granted, hardly anyone ever did it but I liked being able to offer a shorthand search term. I write the long form on the board sometimes for students.

It should be something short, sweet and concise.

Here's my issue. If was easy to say JREF. I referred people to it. I don't know if they followed up but it was easy to say it. Also I got used to typing jref into Google. I understand the bookmark thing but typing those 4 letters is just how I did it. So the issue is partly simple inefficiency on my part but having a 4-letter, phonetically simple acronym has value, IMO.

You shouldn't. The easy ways are easy because they're easy. Why on earth would you not do something the easy way?
Look, you don't even have to google. In every modern browser, you can start typing the beginning of the address and it will automatically pop up. Click in the address bar and start typing "int". The full address will pop up, you can arrow down and hit Enter. Easy. |

Somewhat whiny. If I plug ISF in to my search engine this forum doesn't easily come up. The old acronym yielded instant results and actually still does.
So I was able to direct people to the site with 2 syllables instead of 9, 4 letters vs. 25. It was potentially a way to efficiently refer people to the site. |

Does ISF not mean Insufficient Funds to you people?
In any case, I think it would be great to rename this place "Insufficient Funds." |

I have no objections to iSKEP, but I'll probably just end up saving extra typing and write ISF.
I don't need to Google the name, I have the forum saved in Chrome settings as one of my home tabs. Nicknames usually evolve rather than being decided on. Otherwise, I'd suggest Randi's Rejects... rrrrrrrr. |

There are lots of much easier ways to get here than Googling. I just don't understand why someone would choose one of the harder, less convenient methods when there is such a variety of easier ways.

I am almost not joking when I say I add the extra keystrokes to burn calories. An article I once read said that a secretary who switched from a manual to an electric typewriter would gain 2 pounds a year.
That seems too high, but it's occasionally my justification for doing things the inconvenient way. |

I haven't googled anything to get here in years. I have every site that I have a log-in and user name for all put in a separate bookmark folder. Cleverly labeled "log-in pages" Although that doesn't really get much use for here. I also have the site pinned on my Firefox tab bar ( along with 4 or 5 other pages), so it is always there, and opens automagically every time I open Firefox. By an odd coincidence I happened to mention the board to an old friend of mine last night on the phone while catching up on each other's recent past (we hadn't spoken for quite a few years), and he emailed me back today saying he was having a bit of trouble finding it. ISF didn't help and trying JREF got him onto the old JREF site, where he said he couldn't find anything re-directing him here. I sent him the URL for our home page. I think ISF is just fine, but we need to see if there is something we can do to boost it in search result rankings. If that isn't possible then a more unique name might be in order. |

For searching "ISF forum" gets closer (on Bing it is on first page bottom, same goes for Google).
