Irrational Fear of This DOLL
Hey guys!
I'm new here and came here solely seeking help against this nonsense. Recently I saw this episode of Deadly Possessions on Travel Channel and it had Robert the Doll on it. Now I'm a MOSTLY rational and skeptic guy like you all but this just bugs me hard. I'm having these dark and screwed up thoughts and the image of Robert the Doll keeps appearing at the same time I do. Things like "ugly", "low value". At the same time, my mind imagines a pictures of Robert the Doll and I'm scared of any possible "curses". Can you help me break through this nonsense with cold-hard logic? I'm afraid of getting cursed by saying bad things about the doll in my head and having bad things happen to me! I know this fear is irrational and illogical but I can't stop getting anxiety and suffering from it. Please help. Thank you. |

The source of the fear
My fear stems from the fact that a person on the show who made fun of the doll got a stroke 3 weeks later. Also that tons of people keep sending in letters asking for apology because they got bad luck. (Although this is probably the nocebo affect and the RAS focusing on bad events).

If you are having severe anxiety, please see a therapist.
There is nothing about a TV show telling a scary story about an old doll in museum that should cause anyone undue fear. The target audience for this show is people who enjoy being scared or creeped out by so-called "unexplained" things. It is 100% entertainment and advertising for the guy's museum. If you are being honest about the level of your irrational fear, then be honest about seeking treatment for it. It is likely that the source of your issue is something other than this doll. |

It appears that deadly dolls are a common occurrence on Deadly Possessions on the Travel Channel.
Here's the one the OP refers to. Dude, if haunted doll were as common as the stories go, someone would have won the MDC by now. |

Finally Peace At Last
Thank you guys who responded!
I've finally found peace! I did some research and found people that had actually personally came into contact with the doll. Needless to say. It's all a marketing ploy to bring in tourism to Key West, Florida. Evidence: 1. There's no sources of where the curse came from and the maid who placed some black magic on the doll is "just theory" without evidence. 2. It's just a mail order toy from Germany and there was IN FACT no servant of the Otto family that put any curse on the doll. The servants and family were close friends too! 3. The owners admit that the media and everything else exaggerates everything that happens with the doll to stir up tourism. 4. The current caretaker of the doll has good luck and no bad luck. <-LOL 5. Employees of the museums the doll is at have seen nothing and have had zero bad luck! |

Yeah the Podcast "Lore" did an episode on this one.
I mean it's all fluff, even the parts of it that might be true, but as this sort of thing goes it's good fluff. |

Who needs a therapist when less than an hour on Google can relieve you of your inner demons and give you inner peace?
The OP posted a photo of the doll that was causing them "dark and screwed up thoughts" (although I don't think that thinking that an ugly low-value doll is in fact ugly and low-value remotely qualifies as "dark and screwed up") and was genuinely afraid that if they thought bad things about the doll they'd "get cursed". 51 minutes they posted again to say that they now knew it was all just a silly TV show with no evidence that it's cursed and their fears have been allayed. |

If someone is genuinely afraid of a "cursed" doll that they saw on television, they need professional help.
"Genuine" is the key word there. |

I don't know, every once in a while something unexpectedly sets off a person's danger detectors for no very good reason. I got the for-real-adrenalin-fears standing at the edge of a spooky, dark patch of woods that I know from the area's layout wasn't actually likely to contain anything more scary than a raccoon, because friends had just been telling scary stories about things they thought they'd seen there. And anyone who gets panic attacks can describe how in the middle of one, it can be hard to believe yourself when you tell yourself it's only a panic attack and you will be fine. More in line with the OP, I've been genuinely spooked from reading clearly fictional scary stories and been unable to relax until the feeling wore off. Rational knowledge can sometimes get trumped for a little while by fear responses; you don't have to be malajusted for this to happen.

my grandma came in contact with a cursed doll when she was 14. The curse eventually caught her, and she died because of it, at the age of 97.

I'm actually diagnosed with a VERY mild form of Pure OCD.
This is where the fear comes from. Regardless, this has been my first "attack" in 3 years. I'm done with TV shows made to entertain people that like scares. |

The thing about Pure OCD. It's 100% preventable but once you have a thought you can't allow. It will keep coming back again and again.
The white bear experiment: Try not to picture a polar bear and it will keep reappearing again and again. Now imagine if a thought caused you small anxiety so you tried to suppress. Obviously what would happen is it would keep coming back. |

Here's the important thing to consider: You're human.
Everybody, I don't care who they are, how educated they are, or intelligent and rational they are - everyone has a blind spot in their thinking. Once a spark gets in there you can spin off the logic rails pretty fast. At least you were aware of it, and did the mental and intellectual work to get over this issue. Keep this experience in mind the next time you run across a smart person who is susceptible to woo, they're not dumb, they just have a blind spot they don't know about. ![]() |

Intrusive thoughts like the ones you describe are a common occurrence in people. They are exacerbated during periods of stress, anxiety, or fatigue.
I suggest going to bed a bit earlier at night. Watch funny movies, or engage in other upbeat activities. If the thoughts persist and continue to be a hindrance to your well-being, consider consulting a doctor. Even a general practitioner may be able to help, or evaluate if you're in need of a specialist. |

Could be, after the doll version was rescued from a fire. Never burn evil dolls, the ensouled demon is then released. I imagine it was snatched from the flames just in time before catastrophe ensued.

Before Chucky, there was Devil Doll from Trilogy of Terror (1979 or so).

It's not hard at all to get caught up in things like that. Even when your mind knows better, sometimes it still gets you. I have gone to alleged haunted places with friends as the skeptic to prove to them such things most likely don't exist, but I have gotten creepy feelings or tiny moments of fear in places for no reason. Those were most likely from the group feelings/suggestions. I remember seeing a show that included that doll's story. It was a creepy story and an ugly doll for sure. Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't this part of the Warrens nonsense? I am thinking it was part of their demon doll collection or something.
Ahhh Karen Black. Now I have images of that little doll and his crazy spear...lol. |

Similar experiences here, though in a less formal capacity. Getting creeped out is common and reasonable. Getting creeped out and using that as evidence or proof of ghosts is also common but definitely not reasonable.

Not familiar with that one. My evil doll movies were Magic and, of course, Poltergeist. Whole generation of kids terrified of clowns because of that one.
