Enjoying a Memorial Day picnic while black

Franklin Richardson, a National Guard sergeant who just returned from a 9-month deployment to the Middle East, and his wife Jessica decided to take their dog and have a picnic at Oktibbeha County Lake in Mississippi, a site run by Kampgrounds of America. No sooner had they gotten lakeside than a truck pulled up and a white woman emerged from the vehicle with a gun in her hand - finger on the trigger, according to Jessica Richardson. She started yelling at them that she was a campground employee, repeatedly saying that they "didn't belong" and needed to "git!", and that reservations were required to use the lake. Jessica took out her phone and the video has gone viral.

Franklin Richardson at the time was incensed at being threatened with the gun, saying that he had been unaware that reservations were required and the employee would've only had to say as much to move them along, but that preemptively pulling a gun on them - particularly over such a trifle - was utterly out of line.

But it turns out that the employee wasn't even right; as the Richardsons were leaving the campground they came across another employee - the first employee's husband it turned out (the pair manage the campground as a husband-and-wife team) - who immediately told them that they didn't need any reservations to use the lake at all, a fact later confirmed by a statement from KOA proper saying that visitors are merely encouraged to register upon arrival.

The employee who pulled a gun on the Richardsons has been fired by KOA.

This one is a little more egregious than typical LWB stories, because most of those usually just involve acting on a racist presumption that the black person "doesn't belong" or likely hasn't followed the rules or cannot possibly have the appropriate credentials or whatnot. In this case we have a person who is deliberately inventing a nonexistent "reservation" policy to justify forcing the offending black people to move along.

... According to Buzzfeed. Before you draw any interesting conclusions about this event, maybe you should find out what really happened.

According to this article, NBC has also been told by a KOA spokesman that reservations are not required to use the lake.

So far I have not seen any sources quoting a KOA statement claiming that reservations are in fact required.

Doesn't matter if reservations are or are not required. Brandishing a gun and behaving like that is just...wow.

Well, it's not a surprising turn of events these days. A rabid racist with a gun does a bad thing, which is unfortunately expected, and the corporate parent appears to do the right thing, firing the racist, which we've also come to expect of an organization as large and diverse as KOA. News sources note that KOA has stated that, apart from this incident, they don't condone gun toting among management, which is not surprise considering that KOA has long billed itself as family friendly.

Prestige, before your characteristic kneejerk "yes but" sort of response, you might have taken the trouble to Google it, since the news is not just on Buzzfeed, but on many major media.

Rule of so. You immediately leap to the conclusion that the photographers and fishermen were white.

Meh? I think I'll wait to see pics of them, at least.

Yeah but this time she pulled a gun. Also I think I read somewhere that the woman has confederate flags on her facebook page, so definitely racist.

Of course it is a public lake, and the KOA is on land owned by the school district. But facts will never get in the way of minimizing and pretending these events are really the black persons fault.

I think the best part is after yelling at them about the "reservations" they allegedly can't be there without having, she emphasizes that "they won't let you" - "they" meaning the KOA. She wants them gone so badly she's willing to lie, but is consciously aware enough of how absurd the phony policy she made up is that she tries to disown it.

No they were totally the victims here. Zero doubt about that.

If someone doesn't explicitly state that they are a racist, there is simply no way to determine if they are or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if this women is a racist nut, the story is however just as consistent with her being just a nut. Neither would be particularly surprising. I am however more interested in the husband's story, even by the first story, he seems quite reasonable and not especially racist. I'm very curious what this relationship is like.

Also, she's 70, is wouldn't be overly surprised if you she was suffering age related dementia.

Random thoughts, back when I was a security guard you come across a guy every so often who really wanted to carry a gun on the job but unsurprisingly couldn't get a license to be an armed security guard. She reminds of those guys.

Yea she remembered her youth when it was a sundown town and that was the expected response to black people.

I'm reminded here of an incident from childhood. My older sister, usually a top of class sort of student, got some razzing in third grade when she accidentally spelled the state in question "Missippissi." Inadvertently apt.

That's insane.

Am I wrong in thinking that she should be charged with something here? Pointing a gun at someone with her finger on the trigger?
