The Irish cave known as hell's entrance -- and Halloween's birthplace

-

While many folks may find this old news (it was old news last year too) and/or a puff piece, I found it interesting...

The Irish cave known as hell's entrance -- and Halloween's birthplace
Ian Lee (2021-10-31)

Oweynagat, Ireland -- Ireland has long been the land of fairies and fairy tales. It's also the home of Halloween.

There is something spooky hidden among these hills. It's green and lush -- almost heavenly -- but buried here is a portal to another world, another dimension. Some call it a gate to hell.

"They christened it in one medieval text as Ireland's door or entrance onto hell," said Mike McCarthy, a tour guide and author.

It's also the birthplace of Halloween, or as the Irish call it, Samhain...

Sigh.
While it's a good story to separate the tourists from their cash, there is no evidence that either Rathcroghan or Oweynagat are where Samhain began. They and the other sites do have fascinating historical, cultural and mythological links, especially to the Táin's.

That's true (about it being a puff piece), but isn't ALL history old news?

They didn't tell us if the cave in fact leads to hell. Cliffhanger, that.

Well, for one thing I didn't know that, "It's also the birthplace of Halloween, or as the Irish call it, Samhain."

Maybe that info is wrong, but it's still interesting to me.

Now, can you return the favor and tell me why you opened, read, and then posted to this thread?

There are so many people going down there now, that they probably needed another one.

Because I thought you might have a reason for posting? Other than, here is some random link that you "found interesting", of course.

I seem to recall there's a copy of Rodin's Gates of Hell, which includes The Thinker, on the Stanford University campus.

Are you talking about this one (I think this is the one in Paris, but I could be wrong):

I had to reduce the size, because the original photo is huge (2MB+), but it's very detailed and depicts a scene from the Inferno, the first section of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, but if you want to check it out, I downloaded it to my website:

Wikipedia link:

French artist Auguste Rodin's The Gates of Hell (French: La Porte de l'Enfer)

Isn't that a copy of the one in Paris?

The original plaster was restored in 1917 and is displayed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.[8] A series of plaster casts illustrating the development of the work is on view at the Musée Rodin in Meudon. Also in 1917, a model was used to make the original three bronze casts:

The Musée Rodin, Paris.
The Rodin Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno Park, Tokyo.[11]

Subsequent bronzes have been distributed by the Musée Rodin to a number of locations, including:

The Kunsthaus Zürich, Zurich
The Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University
The Plateau, Seoul, Korea
Museo Soumaya, Mexico City

The neat thing about cast-metal sculptures is that forms at different scales can be produced from the same design, and each casting is the art itself in its own right. The one in Palo Alto is not a copy of the one in Paris. They're both castings of the same piece by Rodin. Each of them is equally "The Gates of Hell by Rodin".
