I'm not posting this as a way to advertise for the humane society, but because it's nice to know that some people are thinking of the animals. They suffer just as much as humans do during wars...

By George Packer The country the Russians came to destroy, in fighting for its life, has become one that extends solidarity and love beyond its human citizens. It’s striking how many stories and pictures from the war in Ukraine involve animals. One of the first Ukrainian civilian victims was a woman killed by Russian shelling as she tried to bring shelter dogs to safety near Kyiv. During the evacuation of the city, railway platforms and trains were crowded with pets of all kinds. A woman carried her infirm German shepherd a dozen miles on foot to cross the Polish border. A Ukrainian soldier took time to bandage the head injuries of a stray dog wounded by shelling. Every Ukrainian platoon seems to have a pet dog, some of them actually serving in the military. A man risked his life to rescue a vanload of kangaroos from the Kharkiv zoo; then he returned for the tapirs. A girl in the back seat of a passenger car was shot by Russian troops because the pet carrier in her lap, with her wounded cat inside, kept her from bending over when her mother yelled “Get down!” (The girl, her mother, and their cat survived; the fate of the volunteer driver is unknown.) Ukraine reminds us that animals suffer during wartime, too
By Pamela Constable (2022-03-29) During a conflict, those who love and care for animals must make agonizing decisions As I write this, sipping coffee and listening to Miles Davis at home in Virginia, a toothless tabby named Scar is curled up next to me and a frail ginger cat named Pancake is napping upstairs. Ten years ago, Scar was starving in a garbage dump in Kabul. Five years ago, Pancake survived a suicide bombing there that blew out the window in my office where she always sat in the sun. Scar and Pancake are the lucky ones, plucked by chance from harsh and dangerous conditions in a foreign war zone, long ago. I think about that every morning when I read the latest horrific news from Ukraine, where thousands of desperate people are making extraordinary efforts to save their pets — cats, dogs, rabbits, goats, even turtles — as they flee from Russian guns and missiles. The military assault on Ukraine, in addition to destroying bridges and roads, theaters and schools and hospitals, is also destroying something less tangible. It has shattered the small pleasures and habits of a peaceful, democratic, upwardly mobile society, one characterized in part by its compassion for animals... (SNIP) Despite the danger, some Ukrainians have decided to remain at home to care for animals — and have found a redeeming sense of purpose and fulfillment in doing so. Staff members at the city zoo in Kyiv moved into the facility last month to help reassure captive creatures terrified by air raid sirens, shelling and gunfire. For weeks, a keeper slept near a nervous, 17-year-old Asian elephant named Horace. In Kharkiv, a woman whose neighbors fled the besieged city said her life now revolves around feeding the dogs and cats they had to leave behind. In the city’s subway, now being used as an underground shelter, some families have set up camp with their pets. They say it helps distract their children during the day, comforts them at night, and keeps a sense of humanity alive in a dark and frightening time... However, the other two were still quite stuck, and didn’t seem like they were going anywhere soon. (SNIP) Based on the fact that their tails were frozen down below the ice was a good indicator that the sweet, innocent felines had been stuck there overnight. The temperatures were absolutely freezing at this time, and he didn’t want these poor baby balls of love to have to suffer even another second of this cold, harsh winter weather.  (SNIP) Without hesitation, Kendall grabbed what he needed from his vehicle and calmly made his way back to the kittens. After all, he didn’t want to scare them even more than they already were. They were still crying their little hearts out with their tiny meows, and struggling to make it out of the ice. So, what exactly was it that Kendall grabbed from his car? The knight in windchill-proof armor decided to bring out his big mug of coffee to battle out the war against the ice!  (SNIP) Kendall poured his delicious hot cup ‘o Joe on the ice, and waited for the heat from his beverage to melt the ice. But as the ice was melting, the little kitties weren’t trying to escape the area. At first, the poor shivering kitties sniffed around this pool of mocha liquid that surrounded them—which didn’t seem to be that unusual since cats are known to be curious. But then the little dehydrated and hungry kittens started to lick it. How hilariously heart-melting and precious!  (SNIP) His plan was a success and the freezing, fuzzy felines were finally set free! Kendall quickly scooped them up so they couldn’t run away, and take them straight into his car to warm them up. But this was still just the beginning of the rescue mission...  (SNIP) |

In the days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dima Naumovich (27), Mariia “Masha” Kryvenko (27), and Anastasiia Trishkina (25) volunteered to help evacuate civilians and animals. During that period, Dima travelled 50 kilometers from Kyiv to Irpin every day to assist with evacuations – until he was hit by a sniper. Fortunately, the sniper missed, only grazing his temple. Today, Irpin’s residents are clearing the streets after Ukrainian forces re-took control of the city. I like to focus on animals and the Ukrainian war, but it's also about cats!
Pusha the cat had just given birth to her own four kittens at the park in Bakhchisaray, Crimea, where she lives when her human friends asked for her help. Four baby squirrels had lost their own mother and needed someone to care for them. With the help of the humans, the baby squirrels got over their fear of their new mom, and Pusha now nurses, bathes and plays with them alongside her own kittens. The kittens were found when an employee was on their way to work, and they noticed the brown bag and little meows coming out of the bag. When the kittens were discovered, they were messy and instantly taken to get cleaned up. In just the two hours that they were there, a foster home was found for them. Their foster mom reports that the kittens are doing much better. In a few weeks, these cute little kittens will be available for adoption through San Antonio Pets Alive... Mannequins might be easy to find in Kharkiv, which has endured a heavy shelling by Russian forces since the war began in February. His shift indicates how unpopular the invasion is even among Ukrainians who were previously sympathetic to Russia. Trukhanov defended his pivot in a Tuesday interview with the English-language Independent. He explained that when he became mayor of Odesa, Ukraine's third-largest city, he "took an oath of allegiance" to the Ukrainian people, which he said is important to him. Animal welfare efforts are widespread across the country, with many shelters working with neighboring countries to transport pets and animals across borders. Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer is on the board of directors for Big Dog Ranch Rescue based in Palm Beach County, Fla. “These are pets that were simply left behind, not by fault of the owners who are in the midst of a war. All they’ve been hearing is bombs and shaking. Their whole world has been turned upside down,” Ziegelbauer said. Ziegelbauer and the founder and CEO of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Lauree Simmons, rescued 20 dogs near the Ukrainian border, many of them from a bomb shelter. “There were two -- that one had his leg blown off by a bomb and one had severe burns on his back -- and we had trouble getting them across the border. It really traumatized not only the people but all of the dogs left behind, and those were some of the lucky ones,” Simmons explained. “When that van pulled into our shelter in Poznan, Poland, and that door opened up and you saw those dogs in the crates, your heart just sank. It was a miracle venture, and I feel very fortunate that I was able to do this,” Ziegelbauer said...  (SNIP)
