IIRC there are a "few" moon rocks out there. Also, how was it vetted? Did someone from NASA come over and say that it was a moon rock or did they call up NASA and ask if they really gave a moon rock to PM Drees?

Oldish news. Threads at Apollo Hoax (skeptic site): Fake Apollo rock in Netherlands and Bad Astronomy & Universe Today forum: 'Moon rock' in Dutch museum is just petrified wood.

Short summary: seems to be a poorly tracked gift received in 1969, original recipient is dead; US was not giving out Moon rocks in 1969; and a quick glance by any qualified geologist (or, probably, amateur rock-hound) will identify it as petrified wood. "Nothing to see here, move along."

ETA: gift to government official not from astronauts or other Apollo people.

The article says it was over the phone. I wonder if Mr. Drees decided to keep the genuine rock he was given, perhaps to sell it on the black market? Or maybe he just lost it and wanted to avoid the embarrassment, so he gave the museum a piece of petrified wood that looked similar. Who knows?

The Onion will clear all this up with a single well-written article.
