I am completely sick and ******* tired of the weather hyperbole surrounding every storm! We get told that it's going to be a killer, biggest storm in a century, you may die! We also get told to prepare to be stuck in our homes for the next ******* decade or two!

I get kind of a kick out of all of these storm warnings. In North Dakota we're so damn used to the cold and blizzard conditions that I started tuning them out a decade ago or more. Like you said, when everything's an emergency nothing's an emergency.

ETA: That being said, perhaps some of these areas getting aren't used to getting the cold or snow? I wonder how Texas's electrical grid will hold up this time around. Cruz better book some tickets.

There is often great hyperbole around the weather.

But I'll balance that in that I've lived here in Colorado for about 30 of my 50+ years and we've never had such a stretch of below zero temperature.

It has gotten this cold before, but it has not stayed this cold for this long. And I don't remember it ever dropping 40 degrees in a half hour like that for a total of 60 degrees temperature drop over about eight hours. Last night my wife and I spent about 15 minutes just sitting and watching the thermometer readout, dropping about a degree a minute as the front hit.

Then again, there was a wildfire outside town two days ago. We have a new fire season, fall-winter wind driven events. That's new too.

Around 1990, while being a student at the University of Georgia, the world already came close to an end almost. There was a snow fall so bad the university had to be closed, to save countless lives.

This is how it went down:

I had bicycled to university relatively early in the morning, to secure a presonal computer to use all day for an assignement that was due soon (remember 1990? When not nearly everybody owned a personal computer? I sure didn't!). At the time, let's say 8 a.m., I perceived no harbingers of impending doom and probably had failed to listen to any weather news sources for too long.

The PC lab I worked in the next couple of hours was windowless, and as there was no internet, no push-news, we were clueless about the catastrophe that was brewing outside!

So late in the morning, say half past ten, a guy walks in and says we must leave campus immediately, the uni president has closed the university because of dangerous snowfall - it would be imprudent and undefensible if he allowed students, faculty and staff to drive in these conditions to campus and very probably die.

We resieted, arguing that our windowless lab should probably be a safe place to ride out the storm, and it would be reckless to release us to the winter havoc that, it appeared, was obliterating everything in Athens presently that wasn't cast in concrete (and quite a lot in Athens wasn't cast in concrete. Did the president actually mean for, e.g., me to get on my bike, leave campus, only to get stuck in mountains of snow and die of hypothermia? Yes, the unknown guy instisted, that was what was expected of me. Now please everybody leave, we'll power down the computers...

We relented, walked up the stairs, and stepped out the building entrance, into the winter weather that caused the lockdown of an entire state flagship university:

It was still an estimated 48 °F, but cold-looking clouds cast over us, and here and there, quite surprisingly giving the mild temps, a single snowflake showed up. Most melted 6 to 10 feet above ground, a handful made it to the gound, only to melt there immediately.
It never got colder than 42 °F, and no snow at all accumulated, that day, or week, or month.

I made a safe bike ride home. And missed the deadline for my assignement...

All that cold air is expected to squeeze warm air (from somewhere) into coastal New England so we'll get a brief warm-up with heavy rain. I expect the rain therapy to be really effective on my lingering Covid symptoms when I go do some non-contact errands.

March 13th, my oldest sons 4th birthday. Storm of the Century’ it’s called now. We were stationed at Frostburg State University and got about 45 inches of snow in 24 hours.

It was a hurricane, with snow, and every airport from Miami to Novia Scotia was closed during it.

I don't remember which year it was, but it was around that time, I was in the Air Force and Stationed in New Jersey. One morning I rode to work on my bike over a thin layer of snow I barely noticed, and found out when I got to work that it was essential personnel only because the base was closed and I could go home. The snow had melted by that afternoon.

I found it especially funny because I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and remember having to make my way through knee deep snow to a school I don't recall ever closing because of snow.

I went to college in Bozeman, MT. Elevation about 5000ft.
The winter of 1969? or thereabouts it never got above 0F for the entire month of February and not above -20F for a whole week. What a bunch of pussies you guys are.
Meanwhile, here in the Puget Regions 50 years later it's about 20F and Damn, that's cold!!!

I'm in my mid-70's and grew up in Montana. If they had closed the schools like they do here I'd be in about the 4th grade by now.

We have school closings almost every year, probably 2 or 3 days, but it has to be really bad. Right now in Grand Forks, ND they're suggesting no one go outside because of the temperature and the city is still operating like normal.

I've found it's much more pleasant to be out on a bright, sunny, clear day with snow-covered ground at 10 degrees (F), than cloud cover (even dry) and a mild/moderate breeze at 30F. When there's any kind of air movement, it takes away that warmth bubble that your body creates.

People are driving on the main streets for the most part, but the traffic cams all have icicles dripping off them.

It's supposed to thaw when the temp goes from 29F now to 52F tomorrow! Yep, spring is on its way.

We relented, walked up the stairs, and stepped out the building entrance, into the winter weather that caused the lockdown of an entire state flagship university: It was still an estimated 48 °F, but cold-looking clouds cast over us, and here and there, quite surprisingly giving the mild temps, a single snowflake showed up. Most melted 6 to 10 feet above ground, a handful made it to the gound, only to melt there immediately. It never got colder than 42 °F, and no snow at all accumulated, that day, or week, or month. I made a safe bike ride home. And missed the deadline for my assignement... I don't remember which year it was, but it was around that time, I was in the Air Force and Stationed in New Jersey. One morning I rode to work on my bike over a thin layer of snow I barely noticed, and found out when I got to work that it was essential personnel only because the base was closed and I could go home. The snow had melted by that afternoon. I found it especially funny because I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and remember having to make my way through knee deep snow to a school I don't recall ever closing because of snow.

Before you post about how that’s an average winter day where you are……I’m in eastern NORTH CAROLINA! I predict the garage golf simulator will be crowded the next few days. First computer was a Packard Smell 486SX25 with 2MB ram (with an M, not a B), 130MB HD. Saved up and upgraded the processor to a 33dx and added 2MB ram and a 2400baud modem
