Been watching news about the Puget Sound region ice problems. Or "Peugot Sound" according to the closed captions on Channel 4. Here in the rain shadow we've missed it.

Road outside my house is all ice.

Neighbors down the street closed their section as it's a winding hill.

Went from a balmy low 50's with light rain, that abruptly turned into a cyclonic nightmare, then within an hour, snow and a 25 degree temperature drop. Now sunny and icy. Just need a quick round of sunstroke to round out the weather spectrum today.

Looks like it was a pretty nasty storm; reminds me once again how lucky I am to have lived for the last 38 years in Phoenix. Today is a relatively chilly 61 degrees and sunny.

Currently 3F, wind 27 mph, windchill -21F. Guess who decided that a quick trip to Kogers wouldn't be that tough. Just a short step from house to garage. Just a short walk across the parking lot to K's. Just a short push back to the car over the snow w/ a loaded cart. No time at all loading the trunk. A brief recovery period once into the car. Then home again to unload groceries into the house, garage the good ole Ford, and step quickly back indoors. Gasping and dizziness may be disregarded.

Just a touch of frostbite, I think, on the exposed forehead and hands. For a roughtough Wyominger tain't NUTHEN!

Roughtough is a westernism. Closest translation is "brain dead."

Should be fine, just the normal PNW rain which will melt all the ice by morning.

It’s about 10 degrees here, and by degrees, I mean Celsius. Considering going out sun bathing tomorrow.

I found it really odd to see a report on the border crisis in El Paso, Texas, and the migrants were wearing winter clothing.

Dang I didn't have a hard drive until my third computer. Vic 20, an old IBM with 5.25 floppy, then then my first Pentium - 16 megs of RAM baby!

Packard Bell....my roommate way back in the day (obviously) spilled a beer inside his computer while we were playing Descent 2 against each other. Bottle tipped and it poured right on the motherboard through the side vents (horizontal desktop). Zap!

He blew it out with an air compressor and it worked again later.

Fun fact: I use a leaf blower to blow the dust out of my computers. Get that CPU fan hummin! Works awesome just do it outside and be careful.

You need winter clothing in the southern border states in the winter especially at night and at higher elevations.

My poor dog, her paws kept breaking the top layer of ice over the thin layer of snow and it startled her. Seems she wasn't sure if one broke through how far one would fall.

Yes, we are mostly a bunch of Walt Disney heads now. I just went out to walk the dog and she looked at me like I'd lost my mind. The house is still swaying in frigid winds. Sucks the life right out of your lungs. What made our forefathers say "oh hell yeah, this is the kind of weather I'm talking about. Let's have every third family member freeze to death in this Winter Wonderland"?

Although it's the period when it's probably most needed, it's also the most difficult time to foster a new dog. They just find a (temporary) home where it's safe, comfortable, and warm, and then they still have to go outside every few hours, and haven't been trained to do that yet.

You timed your visit to perfection. But stay a few days & it'll be up around 48F. Mich. doesn’t have normal etc.

Bleeagh.

Remains to be seen, but in terms of being able to get into and out of Detroit by air, we actually might have timed it perfectly. We got in Tuesday night, and the storm hit on Thursday. It's supposed to be over by Saturday and we fly out on Sunday.

You know it's bad when Buffalo, NY, a city notorious for it's winter weather, can't cope.....
The Governor has called out the National Guard to help.
For all the jokes, this storm is hitting many parts of the country very hard.

Living "across the lake" from Buffalo we here in TO know all about Lake Effect Snow. Poor Buffalo gets the requisite winds, we much more rarely.

Where I am - west of Toronto - we just got a slight sprinkle of snow from the latest Storm of the Century - however, other areas of Ontario are still digging out.

We had an ice storm yesterday though it's all melted today.

An inch of ice coated every surface, sidewalks, cars, streets, ... you can't walk on it, let alone drive on it.

Edge of the storm under discussion passed over us last night. Lots of rain, and wind gusts to 100 km/hr. Passing over the ocean temporarily bumped local temperature up to 11C. Will be back around 0 tonight. Importantly, we did not lose power. Nor did we die, as near as I can tell. We will get our -20 wind chills and our 300mm snow storms in Jan and Feb just as we always do but for now weather is unremarkable.

Is there anyone else still alive out there?

My sister and her husband a little north of you both ended up sliding down their steep driveway on their butts. Took a while to figure out how to get back up to the house. Not a good thing for people in their mid 60's. Fortunately they are a little bruised but otherwise ok.

Where I live the ocean froze, all the way down to the bottom. So we cut the ice into large chunks and it was like Jello with fruit in it except instead of fruit it was whales and sharks and such. No fruit. There's actually very little fruit in the ocean, that's why sailors used to get scurvy. I feel like this is something you should have been taught in school quite early on. Weren't paying attention, eh? A rebel who didn't value education? Well, those ocean chickens are swimming home to roost upon your lack of vitamin C, buddy, and I for one think you deserve it.

At least 15 people who were obvious wimps and wished they were near edge of storm have died across the US during extreme winter weather

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/win...7f8dbc710c0767

A couple deaths are related to emergency personnel not being able to reach the homes of the people in need. One was homeless, many car crashes.

People die in heatwaves too.

This always cracks me up. I'm typing on a machine with 32 GIG Ram, 1 terabyte internal hard drive for the OS, and two 16 terabyte external hard drives for storing my crap. I do tend to be an electronic hoarder.

It's warm outside: 50F. It's a shock considering the temp over the last week.

Didn't read the links but there was a poor dead homeless guy here somewhere, Seattle I think. Sad. If he'd only made it 24 more hours he might have been OK.

This snowstorm was supposed to be a good time for me as I was supposed to be frolicking in Minnesota instead of getting wet in western Washington. But my truck died on the way to the Seatac airport; get towed home and buy more air tickets to replace the non-refundable ones we could not use.

The next day I come down with covid, again. So now the plans are to wait until the 2nd week of January to fly to Minnesota.

The rain melted all of the snow and ice; I am free to work on the truck now. I'll probably give up trying to figure out why the alternator will not charge the battery then get it towed to a repair shop so I can pay hundreds of bucks to get it fixed. Fork.

We (here in Vermont) got a bit of the same thing Thermal got, except the temperature dropped from 54 to 32 in two hours, and to the single digits by late Friday night. Power and land line phone/internet went off Friday morning and came on in late afternoon today. We're used to losing power, and with both wood stove and generator we hardly noticed the issue except for the dead internet, which is very rare. Surprising how dependent we get.

Oh well, hope everyone else came through OK. It's true that for us, this was no big deal as storms go because we're always prepared, but this really was a killer storm for some, including literally. A woman not far from here was killed by a falling tree in her front yard. The winds hit 70 miles an hour, which is why, although we got only a few inches of snow, it was a terrible struggle to get the power back, and a lot of people had to go to emergency shelters because of the cold snap. When we went to town for groceries yesterday, part of Middlebury was up and running, but part still not, and one supermarket was running on generators, with every cooler and freezer empty. I don't know whether they lost all that stuff, or put it in deeper coolers out back, but I suspect it was a very expensive weekend for them.

Merry Christmas anyway.

It's both. The trend is rising temperature, but the route to it seems to fluctuate more, giving rise to many too many "where's that global warming when we need it" joke variations. So perhaps it's better to use them both at once.
