Wow. Well done Boebert, you've made Sean Hannity look like the sensible and reasonable person.

We're into the 11th vote of our national nightmare. The world looks at us and laughs. There is no hope. The ship is sinking and there are no lifeboats.

Maybe Kari Lake will rush into the House chamber and scream that this election has been stolen, and declare herself Speaker.

One hopes. But what happens with the vote ... Are the dead congressmen counted as "present" if they can't answer?

A bit off topic but I just read up on this metal detector complaint from Republicans. I hadn't followed it before. They complained because the Democrats wanted them, nothing else. Of course.

Why don't the Dems try and push through a bill saying it is illegal for Republican congress folk to shoot themselves in the head? Worth a try.

If this was a regular occurrence then you might have a point, but it isn't.
If the house is going to make a rule that it takes 218 votes to elect a speaker then anybody with half a brain is going to ask, "What if we can't get 218 votes?".

And it has happened before:
Quote:
The last time the House failed to elect a leader was in December 1923, when it took nine votes over three days to finally pick Republican Frederick Gillett of Massachusetts to a third term as Speaker.

The longest battle ever for House Speaker occurred in 1856. That war lasted two months and took 133 votes before Republican Nathaniel Banks, a Union general from Massachusetts, was chosen Speaker.

Now that the metal detectors are gone, it removes the obstacle of getting the gun into the Capitol.

It's a curiosity surely, but I don't think the world is invested enough in the procedural minutiae of the US House to be laughing about it quite yet.

Sadly, not so. It is headline news here in the antipodes and has been since vote 1. It is sort of stunning and sad in a mix, like watching your friend continuously fail their driving license re-test when their only job is being a taxi driver. After 11 failures, you start to seriously wonder if they really want the job at all.

Who says the metal detectors are gone? I don't think anybody wants that. The dispute was that some Repub members felt they shouldn't have to be screened themselves.

This does.

Annie Oakley could shoot well. Boebert will shoot herself in the ass. Or as a gun enthusiast told me, some punk will pull the pistol out of the holster behind her back and have it pressed in her spine before she knows it has gone.

Open carry tells the bad guy who to shoot first; plus, he then gets a valuable firearm.

GOP poised to go into meltdown mode. From National Review, a conservative news source:
Quote:
“I’m not sure how Lauren Boebert on one hand can demand so much out of Kevin McCarthy, but then demand nothing out of someone else and be willing to vote for them to be speaker,” Marjorie Taylor Greene told CNN. “That’s not serious, I don’t think that’s leadership, and I really see it as more obstruction.”

Representative Dan Crenshaw (R., Texas) on Wednesday slammed the group, saying: “I’m tired of your stupid platitudes that some consultant told you to say on the campaign trail, alright. Behind closed doors tell us what you actually want, or shut the ******* up,” according to the Washington Post’s Dylan Wells. National Review link

If this ever gets resolved (yeah, I know), the ****-stirrers are going to be relegated by their own team to fetching coffee for the coffee-fetchers for the next 2 years. They may THINK they are getting plum committee assignments and other concessions, but the people that are promising them are first-class liars and double-dealers. They will get less than zero; they will get shafted, demoted and de-selected at the next election.

The BBC included it in their 2 minute news summary on Radio 3 this morning, and it's the main headline on the Guardian website, so there seems to be plenty of interest in it here too. Maybe it's just the reassurance that we're not the world's only political **** show.

I don't want to derail this thread, so to bring it back on topic, again I think what we're seeing is, a GOP that is divided against itself. I think there clearly are two factions within the GOP, and have been since Nixon began attracting Dixiecrats in 1968. It's an enemy of my enemy kind of alliance.
Thanks, though if the thread was about this I'd seriously question the assumption that no college education=working class, and vice versa.

Some people just don't know when to shut up:
Quote:
Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) doubled down on Thursday on accusing Democrats of drinking alcohol amid the GOP chaos in trying to get a House Speaker elected.

After Fox News’ The Faulkner Focus played that clip and showed the tweet, anchor Harris Faulkner brought in Cammack.

“Popcorn, blankets, and alcohol,” said Faulkner. “We have Twitter receipts of that.”

Cammack doubled down on what she said on Wednesday:

I like I almost struck a nerve there. If it wasn’t true, why did they get so offended? I just can’t figure that one out. AOC actually did prove my point in grabbing drinks yesterday but that’s beside the point.
Twitter is giving receipts now?

Are any of the Dems under the illusion that whichever Repugnican ultimately gets selected...one might be better than the other? Ultimately whoever is going to get elected is going to go all-in on obstructionism and calling for impeachments on every Dem and their granddad.

If the Dems start voting present, I don't think it will be that bad. Kev will know they won't do it a second time. If the Dems do it, they get Kevin out of the deal to allow one member to call for a vote to remove the speaker. If McCarthy breaks the deal with the Dems, they have the votes to call for a new speaker and the never Kevins will join them.

It is possible to get a consensus candidate as speaker. A few hours north of Washington DC, the Pennsylvania House just elected a consensus speaker backed by a bipartisan coalition. https://www.inquirer.com/politics/pe...-20230103.html

Exactly. The Dems have no motive to help Kevin out because they know Kevin will treat them like crap. It also helps to remember that Jeffries has more votes than McCarthy, so any sort of plurality/present deal would still require Dems to abandon the candidate they want for a less popular candidate they hate.

Kevin would have to give up something significant for Dems to even consider helping out.
