So it's official 'Third Wave Hits Sweden':

Quote:
The coronavirus situation is rapidly deteriorating again in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

Johan Bratt, director of health in the Stockholm area, said at a news conference on Wednesday that the number of new corona infections detected in the area has doubled in just three weeks. Last week, 6,336 new infections were diagnosed in the area, compared with 3,225 in week 5.

"The third wave of infections is here, it's here now," Bratt confirmed.
I-L

In the meantime new cases have doubled in Finland from yesterday to >700 today, with four deaths.

I have had to cancel my Easter flight - which in turn was a replacement of my Christmas one- yet again. All sorts of emergency measures coming in. Some dude with the SA variant managed to pass it on to 64 others, apparently, on a journey to Savonlinna, in East Finland.

I guess if someone sneezes or coughs in your face, some of the aerosol will end up on the perspex instead of all over one's face.

Bad news, obviously, but it is good to hear somebody tell it like it is unlike Tegnell's nonsense: "about to" or "approaching".

Some of it may be a questions of delayed registration of new cases and deaths due to the weekend, but it doesn't look good.

It is useful against droplets. It doesn't help much against aerosols.

No, it's a real trend. THS, the national health service are claiming it could increase seven- or ten-fold over the next month. ('Could' = if precautions not taken now.)

I bet B.117 appreciates the Swedish let's-wait-and-see approach.

Could be the Estonians. Their infection rate is increasing nigh on 1,000 per week and they only have a population of about 1.3m. They come off the ferries daily and the same ferries go on to Stockholm. There is no testing. With the Easter holidays coming up, the figures will be horrendous. The age group being infected is largely the 20 -49 group. They are getting it from work.

Sweden continues to dabble. Preferably a new "restriction" or some difficult-to-interpret "advice" a day. Meanwhile, the spread of infection and the pressure on health care is increasing. The third corona wave is here, ready to surprise the Public Health Agency and the government again.

Where have all the flowers gone?
Quote:
* The number of confirmed corona cases in Stockholm has risen with 100% in the past three weeks.
* Region Västerbotten has also seen an increase, where the number of cases has tripled within the same time frame.
* The increased flow of new patients at hospitals seem to be more and more young people.

* Region Stockholm states a third wave of coronavirus is here, as the number of cases keep rising.
* The number of coronacases in Västra Götaland is also increasing.
* Johan Bratt, Acting Director of Health and Medical Care in Region Stockholm, says Stockholmers are not good enough at following recommendations.

I don't know how readers of certain Swedish media interpret headlines like these:
Smittskyddstoppen: Situationen i Finland är kritisk (DagensNyheter.se, March 5, 2021)
Peak infection control: The situation in Finland is critical

Danmark överger vaccinmål (DagensNyheter.se, March 5, 2021 – 14:59)
Denmark abandons vaccine targets

This one leaves less doubt, and the article makes actual per-capita comparisons of Denmark and Sweden:
Fyra ganger mere smitta i Sverige (Expressen.se, March 5, 2021)
Four times more infected in Sweden than in Denmark, and Denmark manages to vaccinate 50% more

Probably not. Some of the are anti-vaxxers, and according to the SVT article:
Quote:
Bland plakaten i folksamlingen stod det bland annat att demonstrationen är en aktion för frihet och sanning. Andra skyltar är kritiska till invandring och till Louis Pasteur
Some posters said that the demonstration is a rally for freedom and truth. Other signs criticize immigration and Louis Pasteur.

Somebody should tell them that it is much too late to cancel that guy! They probably think that he is an immigrant!

At least for the time being, Denmark is doing better than Finland, Norway and Sweden:
Quote:
For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, Denmark now have the fewest cases of the Nordic countries below
MartinJuhl on Twitter (March 6, 2021)
The "Nordic countries below" in the graph don't include Iceland, and Iceland is doing better than the other four Nordic countries. So are the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Martin Juhl explains why the level of testing in the four countries means that the difference is probably larger than it seems based on the number of new registered cases only.
Quote:
For week 8, a little more than 26,700 confirmed cases of Covid-19 were reported in Sweden, an increase of 13 percent compared with week 7. A little more than 238,500 individuals were tested in week 8 and the percentage of positives was 11.

Denmark tests more than that in two days. The percentage of positives in Denmark has been below 0.5 for some time.

Whether it is possible to eradicate the coronavirus from the face of the earth I don't know. It's way too early to guess. With better vaccines that are easier to store and administer and which stop transmission dead (and these will come), a concerted operation to get the last pockets in "difficult" countries could do it. But that's for the future.

What is very unpleasant about Tegnell and others is this almost unspoken corollary that if the virus can't be eradicated world-wide, there's no point in trying to eliminate it locally. (This was actually explicitly spoken by - I think - Graham Medley just under a year ago when he was telling us we all had to catch it to save ourselves from it. Or something like that.) Did we throw our hands in the air and say we'll just accept polio, or measles, or even smallpox or rabies, because there will always be a pocket somewhere? Of course not.

Worldwide eradication of these things starts with the developed countries getting their own houses in order as much as they can, and then there comes a point where the WHO looks at the situation and says, looks like we can maybe do this one chaps. We'd never have got rid of smallpox if we'd waited for the WHO to say "let's eradicate this" before we tried to eliminate it from our own countries. We don't sit back and accept that polio will come back and we can't do anything about it, just because there are still a couple of pockets in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We don't give up against rabies because there are many countries that still have the virus.

Gieseke is a piece of work, and I don't think he can even think straight. That public health officials and epidemioligists aren't promoting disease eradication locally but are instead punting some sort of virus fatalism is very shocking to me.

Martin Juhl explains why the level of testing in the four countries means that the difference is probably larger than it seems based on the number of new registered cases only.

I was amazed to read that something like 54% of vaccinations so far in Finland have been for the younger age groups. I know healthcare workers and police are first in line, together with the >80's. The over-70's can't get Astra Zeneca so have to wait Seems to be a different priority than the UK.

It's a judgement call. Older people are more at risk of morbidity and mortality but the main driver of community spread is younger people. You can argue it either way.

I think that Giesecke is the kind of guy who likes to give the impression that 'it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.' He won't look as heroic in his own delusional way of thinking if some weak people don't have to perish to prove how tough the job is.
Doing something effective to stop the spread at this point would prove how unnecessary the 13,000 Swedish deaths always were. Better help spread it to other countries to prove that Zero Covid was always a pipe dream and measures against the virus don't work.

The police seem to be a fairly long way down the list in Denmark, but many health-care workers got vaccinated very early, and they would be younger than 70, of course. Many of them were vaccinated ahead of schedule rather than waste vaccine doses when it was discovered that you could get more than the expected number of vaccine doses out of the bottles from Pfizer.
Women outnumber men. Many more women than men survive till their 80s and 90s, and more women than men are health-care workers.

Yes, not bad!
When asked what didn't work in Sweden's pandemic response, Giesecke and others still say: protecting the elderly - as if everything else was top-notch and forgetting entirely about the long-haulers and as if they actually did their utmost to protect people at nursing homes from being infected by staff.
They didn't even do what would have occurred to people (like me) without any professional insights: regular testing of staff, PPE for staff as well as for residents. Till this day, you still see photos of old people being vaccinated and neither nurses nor the old people themselves wearing face masks. The first wave didn't even teach them anything.

This, in Glasgow, this afternoon. We have our share of absolute idiots. For some reason they really like to wave the union flag.

When soccer fans could not watch the game at the stadium because of the restrictions, they organized a demonstration, which is allowed in Denmark without any restrictions of the number of participants, on top of a hill overlooking the stadium:
Fodboldfans demonstrerede og undgik både fan-forbud og forsamlingsloft (TV2.dk, March 6, 2021)
It was outdoors, and they didn't seem to be very many, so if it led to any new infections, it would probably have been on the bus going there.
They demonstrated for the right to watch soccer games at the stadium, which I guess will be allowed in 2-3 months when the weather and the vaccinations have made it safe again.

The crowds in Glasgow were so dense, with people hugging each other and talking and laughing and shouting right into each others' faces - virtually no masks in evidence - that it would be a miracle if the virus wasn't transmitted, even though this was out of doors.

As has been demonstrated a couple of times, it can sometimes be difficult to determine how close people are to each other based on photographic evidence alone, but yes, when when you can also see them touching each other, it becomes very obvious.

The new Danish numbers are still pretty good, and so far we haven't seen the expected surge due to B.117. I guess the massive amount of testing must be doing the trick.

Monday:

Finland: 140 (774) 459 37
Norway: 116 (632) 828 14
Iceland: 85 (29) 5 7 - B.117 diagnosed outside quarantine 1,400 tests today
Iceland has 15 active cases, Faroe Islands 2, New Zealand 79
The Faroe Islands have 2 in quarantine, 0 hospitalized.
Two new Covid cases in the Faroes – incoming travellers No plans for further Covid rescue packages

The new Icelandic cases:
Quote:
Þórólfur explains that a passenger arrived in Iceland on 26th February with a negative PCR test certificate, and tested negative at the border. On the fifth day of quarantine after entering the country, he was tested again and this time was found to have the British variant of the coronavirus.
“While he was in quarantine, this person seems to have managed to infect two people who were not in quarantine, but tracing does not show that he broke quarantine rules. This shows how contagious the virus can be,” he says. Those who became infected live in the same building and use the same stairwell as the infected man, though they do not appear to have been in direct contact. The contact tracing team is still working on how the infection spread.
