Highest number of new infections ever - 1,156, and other numbers are rising, too, e.g. 34 on ventilators. In Denmark, the current number is 25.
Same here. Turku-Åbo hospital said they had 20 people on ventilator machines on Sunday which rose in one day to 23. Usually there have been only one or two on these machines, before. The other thing they are saying is that people are coming in and going straight onto them.

Today it is 237.1 per 100,000.

At the moment we have 1.2 million Norwegians in the highest level lockdown (category A). That's 25% of the population. The number of cases is stubbornly refusing to go down. It has still not been decided if or when to continue vaccinating with the AZ vaccine, but more Pfizer vaccines have arrived than expected, so the pace of vaccinations is increasing. An article in Aftenposten today suggested sending all the Az vaccines to poor countries, but that was a bit tongue in cheek, I guess!

Report for Week 10, March 8 to 14, 2021 from Sweden's Public Health Agency:

28,500 confirmed cases based on tests of 270,000 people, 11 percent positive. (I guess many Swedes still only get tested if they are symptomatic.)

B.117 in more than half of all analyzed samples. It varies from region to region: 40 to 84 percent. (The percentage of B.117 in Denmark last week was more than 90.)

The son of an elderly man in Sweden has told BBC Panorama his father ‘was left to die’, after he tested positive for COVID-19, in a care home last April.
Thomas Andersson was shocked to find out that his father, Jan, 81, was not receiving medical treatment, but given end of life care instead.
After Thomas alerted local press, Jan was put on a drip and is now alive and well.
In December 2020, a Swedish commission report concluded Sweden’s pandemic strategy had failed to protect the elderly.

Tegnell and his followers are still repeating the mantra: 'We had the most wonderful strategy in the world and then somebody ruined it by not protecting the elderly! Dreadful, innit?!'

And now that actual herd immunity is in sight, they are pretending that this is what the Swedish strategy aimed for the whole time even though guys like Giesecke openly said that vaccinations were so far away that the only way to achieve herd immunity was by letting the virus spread so people could get infected - while the elderly were somehow safe and sound and cared for, of course. In this way, 'herd immunity' was supposed to have been achieved by May ... 2020.

It is infuriating that many Swedish skeptics still pretend that the deaths of several thousand Swedish nursing-home residents had nothing to do with the Swedish strategy: 'But Tegnell said that old people were to be protected, didn't he?!'

I don't know what made the BBC dig up the story now, but it deserves to be remembered. The power elite of Sweden want it to be forgotten, which is probably the reason why MaskUpSweden has been retweeting Auschwitz Memorial tweets alongside FacesOfCovid retweets in recent days.

I don't know why Worldometers has the Danish number of new cases at 1,272 today. The number 772 and the number 272,517 now include the less accurate quicktests.
Notice the bad news from Iceland this weekend.

Narrative: "Sweden thinks it knows best"
Together with the image of Swedish failures, an image is conveyed that there is an unwillingness in Sweden to see problems and admit mistakes. The narrative is based on a picture that Sweden thinks it knows best, and sometimes better than the other Nordic countries. The description is most clearly seen in Denmark, Finland and Norway. *
The narrative appears for instance in the reporting on Sweden's handling of the pandemic, which sometimes has been described as going against most other countries' way of coping, against recommendations from the WHO and against better knowledge. This is also evident in the reporting about the way Sweden has reviewed the pandemic strategies of other countries.

Scotland's numbers have plateaued again, which I suppose is better than the uptick we were seeing ten days ago having continued up. But we're still seeing between 500 and 600 cases per day on average, so it could be better.

My own region is doing well, we've had no new cases at all for the past three days, and the weekly numbers (which are three days in arrears) show a 7-day positivity rate of 6.9 cases per 100K population and a test positivity rate of 0.4%. We're almost at elimination here, but when they allow travel again we're screwed unless they put angels with flaming swords on the county boundary.

Sweden will open its borders for travelers from Denmark and Norway. Denmark and Norway recommend that people don't go:

Rejser til Sverige forbliver 'røde' for danskere - trods svensk grænseåbning (DR.dk, March 24, 2021)
Trips to Sweden remain 'red' for Danes - in spite of Sweden opening its borders

Reiser du til Sverige i påsken må du på karantenehotell (NRK.no, March 24, 2021)
If you go to Sweden for the Easter holidays, you have to go to a quarantine hotel when you return

The Swedish Government has presented a range of different measures to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to mitigate the economic impact of it. The government’s overarching goal is to safeguard people’s lives and health and to secure the health care capacity. The Government’s policy and decisions aim to:

• Limit the spread of infection in the country
• Ensure health care resources are available
• Limit the impact on critical services
• Alleviate the impact on people and companies
• Ease concern, for example by providing information
• Ensure that the right measures are taken at the right time.
The Government’s work in response to the virus responsible for COVID-19 (Government.se)

It sounds good, but in actuality it seems to be mainly about easing concern ... and not by providing information.

I just had an email that our regional health board is sending mobile testing stations this weekend to (of all places) the fire stations in various towns and villages in their patch. The email included information on how to get a test, and the instruction that this was only for people who were feeling well, anyone with symptoms should book a test by a different route. Personally I can't see the point. I'm half vaccinated, I've been mostly isolated for a couple of months, and as far as I know there isn't any virus in the village anyway. (I did have the friend I'm in an occasional extended household with in my house for a coffee yesterday, but she's now fully vaccinated, as is her husband, and - not on purpose, it's just the way the chairs are - we sat over 2 metres apart in my living room which is about 20 feet by 17 feet with a 10-feet high ceiling and isn't going to aerosolise in a hurry. We didn't sing together though. Maybe next time.)

I wish they would say what the objective of the exercise is. Testing asymptomatic people in places that haven't had a case in weeks seems a tad pointless. It could be a survey exercise I suppose.Maybe they're hoping to mop up some stragglers, but since we only had six cases total in the entire region over about the past ten days I wouldn't expect them to find much. It could do wonders for the % positivity number though, which is already standing at 0.3%.

This is the second time we've eliminated the virus. I know we have a relatively easy patch, mostly rural, but there are a number of sizeable towns and they've all been cleared out apart from Galashiels which still has a handful of cases being contact-traced. And this is with the Kent strain dominant too. I just wish the rest of the country could do the same.

Despite what is being written in the UK tabloids*, Finland's corona crisis is not 'under control', so they are now bringing in policing in Southern Finland to stop people in the streets to demand they explain why they are not at home. First time, they will be given 'advice', the second, maybe a fine. They are still considering confining people to their own region in the south. Figures are 255.6 per 100K. Infections increasing from the previous two weeks.

*Too lazy to look up the figures.

As the number of new cases in Sweden is rising ...
Quote:
• Upper secondary schools for students aged 16 to 18 will reopen for in-class instruction after the Easter holiday.
• Education Minister Anna Ekström said the return was good news for many but it wasn't an indication that the pandemic was over.
• Sweden shut down high schools back in mid-December as Covid-19 infections began to rise but kept day-cares and schools for younger students open.

At first, it didn't look too bad or out of control to me. The numbers of new cases in March seem to be pretty stable:

However, the Serious/Critical numbers are disconcerting: Does Finland do too little TeTrIs?

Stopping people in the street seems a little draconian to me. As long as people are outside, I don't see the problem. Is there more to it?
I would describe conditions in Sweden as out of control, but Denmark, Finland and Norway seem to be on top of it. I think they should have gone for ZeroCovid, and they could have: Hundreds of new cases every day is not acceptable. But they still seem to be able to prevent the virus from getting out of hand.

Swedish satire - akin to The Onion:
Swedish professor to co-host the Dr. Oz Show (The Bent Twig Daily on Facebook, March 18, 2021)

The Swedish professor Angst Våld is a parody of bacteriologist Agnes Wold, one of the prominent fans of the Swedish strategy.

Hmm. Could be, the general figures for the whole of Finland, which is a vast country, don't look too bad, but it has been very concerning int he southern regions, with the figures higher than at the beginning and increasing steadily. OK, so this week the increase has decreased slightly, but then it was high before. The main reason is the B117 Brit variant, which is highly infectious and also appears more virulent. There has been a handful of the SA variant but it is the B.1.1.7 that has cause the current spread.

So yes, there is a new Bill on its way

Quote:
Today, the government reports on the restriction of Finns' freedom of movement and close contacts under Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd).

The government has negotiated a bill that would temporarily restrict freedom of movement. The main goal is to reduce people-to-people meetings and close contacts in the event of an accelerating and uncontrolled spread of coronavirus disease in the regions of southern and southwestern Finland.

The police are already preparing to monitor compliance with the restrictions. Surveillance would be carried out mainly by police officers working in surveillance and alerting and traffic control.

Restrictions are estimated to apply to Turku, Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen.

Just when most of the snow has melted and for the first time the daily temperature has been above 1 °C all day and al night. Finns just want to burst out into the sunshine, just like the pussy willows and catkins now springing forth. Nature is stirring and so is the spirit.

Bursting out into the sunshine is a good idea, but stay out of the saunas!
They are super-spreader events waiting to happen.

BREAKING NEWS!

Better late than never, I guess.
The Swedish Public Health Agency finally realizes that asymptomatic transmission is an actual thing!
Quote:
Sweden's test strategy to be changed.
The Swedish Public Health Agency wants to invest in rapid antigen tests to find asymptomatic cases.
Everyone who has been in close contact with an infected person must now be tested.
(...)
For a long time, contact tracing in Sweden focused on people who had had contact with infected people being attentive to symptoms and testing themselves if the disease broke out.
But recently, the Public Health Agency has changed on several points. Among other things, for some time, the agency has wanted everyone who has been in close contact with an infected person to be tested - regardless of whether they have had symptoms or not.
The Public Health Agency changes its test strategy – wants to catch asymptomatic cases

This is rad!
Apparently, you can teach old dogs new tricks!

That has happened in Finland, too. Given high temperatures kill the SARS-CoV-2 dead - most saunas heat up to about 80° - 100°C (or if you really want value for money 120° ) - then the infection will have been from the number of people together at a time, for example, in the dressing rooms and showers. I have my own sauna so it doesn't affect me, although we do have communal ones sometimes, when meeting up for barbeques and what have you in summertime. Probably won't happen this year.

The number of ICU patients in Stockholm has increased by 80 percent in two weeks:
80 procent fler iva-patienter på två veckor (SVT.se, March 26, 2021)

Johan Carlson, General Director of the Swedish Public Health Authority, just told a parliamentary inquiry that you can't compare Sweden's death toll to other countries in the Nordics because they had fewer infections.

Sweden's Public Health Agency currently claims that the Swedish strategy was always about suppressing the spread of the virus as much as possible. Some things just don't age well:
Quote:
Right now, almost 30 people considerably younger than what the Public Health Agency has declared as risk age are in ICUs.
However, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell thinks that you can't draw any conclusions based on the numbers.
– But since young people have a big chance of making it, we may obviously hope that it continues like this.
Tegnell: It is good if more young people are infected here than in other countries
