A view of the U.S. from someone who is leaving

The America I give thanks for (as I depart)

A point of view from a BBC North America editor who has lived here for the past eight years and is celebrating his final Thanksgiving before he moves back to the U.K. What he will and won't miss is at the end.

Not exactly an in depth analysis. Some truths and some curious over-generalizations. One man's opinion, i suppose.

First thing he'll miss is "sunshine". He obviously wasn't here in The Other Washington!

He'll miss our quintessentially American things such as fish and chips, the Queen's speech, red telephone booths, and of course Mrs Slocombe's pussy.

Having worked in America at various times, ie extended work trips as opposed to living there, the work ethic is one of the things that I think is misunderstood.

Feeling pressure to never have a sick day or take your entitled leave might result in higher attendance but does not necessarily result in higher productivity.

Is this dish not truly AMERICAN? Is it not found in every state from East to West and North to South? I mean, the US is such a big humongous country that once you have lived in one city for eight years you are wholly qualified to speak about it in its totality.

Silly puff piece.

I don’t think it is fair to make the thread all about Shemp.
