Welcome KayBur, hope the forum makes your quarantine more endurable. Sorry to say that the first thing that came into my mind when reading your name is a event in the highland games called the caber toss. The caber is basically a telephone pole that one tries to toss such that it flips end over end.

Welcome, everyone. |

Thanks, I find associative thinking helps balance out my tendency for dissociative thinking. I try to do both in moderation.
Having never been able to get through a written work of fiction longer than a short story, though I can read a technical manual or reference book from end to end. For me the associations are generally with quotes, movies, TV, song lyrics and a smattering of poetry. A lot of times things just seem to click together easily for me. A big advantage in my job of working with complex integrated elecro-mechanical systems. |

All have their own characteristics. I have had some kind of inability to watch films lately. So I noticed that even if the film is interesting, I still need to either watch something on my tablet, or urgently get the book I wanted to read. In general, there are a lot of small things. But when it comes to reading, I can read for hours.

I’m doing about the same thing now, but I’m still unhappy that I can’t just sit and watch a movie. This is especially annoying when my wife and I decided to watch a movie, and I am constantly distracted. The wife is offended, thinks that I am not interested in her. And I don't understand how to explain correctly that I can't just sit and look at the screen right now.

Welcome, Timur, while I too look forward to highbrow meaningful discussions, the meaningless lowbrow stuff also has its appeal.
Much of which can be found here. Humor Welcome, everyone. |

A high brow is simply a euphemism for balding.
Not that that's any reason not to want it, of course. But did you come in specifically for the letters-to-prison thing, Timur, or was that happenstance? (From before my time here, not the thread but its subject's posts on here, but it is your resurrection of that thread that brought it to my notice. A ...hair-raising thread, if you ask me.) But either way, welcome, and happy discussing. On that business, and other things as well. |

Chanakya: I love humor as much as the next soi-disant intellectual, and appreciate the Monty Python references in particular; it's hard to do better than good standup, though, imo. I agree that Curly > Shemp, and as to Chanakya's post, I don't mean to intrude on what one might call, in contemporary terms, a safe space. I've met people from many walks of life, some of whom have done morally objectionable things (it's a wide scale) and yet have merits at the same time worthy of recognition, and perhaps even an attempt at compassion/understanding. There was a neo-Nazi guy who rejected that affiliation after his daughter was born, and had a come to Jeebus moment, and goes on speaking tours of synagogues and churches. having found a new and better way. Redemption, second chances, seem meritorious to me, under the right circumstances, instead of the all-too-human tendency (particularly in American society, to my observation) to act as a virtual lynch mob, piling on to someone who's already been judged and sentenced and serving time. Criminal justice reform, anyone?
On that note, here's a joke - not particularly highbrow, though I suspect most who know if it are likely balding. Two Jews in front of a firing squad. The guard asks them if they want blindfolds; they say no. The guard then gets ready to give the order to fire. One asks, "Don't we get a last request?" The other admonishes: "Shh, Murray! Don't make trouble." |

So I see.. hopefully the reasonable/decent/interesting outweighs their opposites enough. Keep hope alive!

Hello everybody. I have been following this site for quite some time and thought I should finally join. I have been a skeptic and follower of science for many decades.
