Missing children, fugitive parents, and drive-by shootings

This is an extremely complicated case. It is a tangled spiderweb the likes of which I can't recall having ever read before. It will take more than one link and a couple of paragraphs of article quotes. So bear with me as I try to put things in a coherent order, but be aware that it will be difficult and despite my best efforts you may have to do some of your own research to make ultimately make sense of the details. There are lots of names to retain and tangential incidents that enter the story in random-seeming ways that can be confusing. With that in mind, let's begin.

The story begins in what ultimately turns out to be the middle of things, on November 26th of 2019 when extended relatives of a seven-year-old boy named JJ Vallow called police in Rexburg, Idaho to ask them to conduct a welfare check on JJ, saying they hadn't heard from him in "several months". At that time, JJ lived in Rexburg with parents Chad and Lori Daybell and older stepsister Tylee Ryan. The welfare check request, however, was specifically for JJ, not the family generally or anyone else at the home.

When police arrived at the home that day, only the parent Daybells were present, and they told the police that JJ was visiting a family friend in Arizona. The police followed up on this statement with authorities in Arizona and learned that it was not true. The next day, Rexburg police returned to the home with a search warrant only to find the house vacant, and phone evidence suggests the Daybells had left "abruptly" and only a short time before police arrived. To date, the locations of Chad and Lori Daybell and of JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan are unknown.

Then it gets complicated.

Relating the developments in the order in which they came to light is too unhelpful and confusing in this case; it is probably better to relate the facts in a more objectively chronological order. But even that would be confusing without some context, so first the cast of characters:

Firstly, neither Chad nor Lori is JJ's biological parent. JJ is Lori's adopted son through her previous marriage to a man named Charles Vallow. Tylee Ryan is Lori's 17-year-old biological daughter, from the marriage prior to that one. Chad Daybell is Lori's latest husband; they married earlier in November, just days before JJ Vallow's relatives called the Rexburg police to check on JJ's welfare.

Lori married her previous husband, Charles Vallow, in 2006. In 2014, the couple adopted JJ, who was the son of one of Charles Vallow's relatives who was unable to take care of him. In 2018, the Vallows lived in Phoenix, Arizona, and it was in December of that year that Lori first became (known to be) associated with Chad Daybell, when they appeared together on a religious podcast talking about the end of the world. Chad Daybell was an author of religious-doomsday novels and was at that time married to a woman named Tammy Daybell; they lived in Salem, Idaho.

In February of 2019, two months after the podcast debuted, Charles Vallow filed for divorce. He complained to the court that Lori viewed herself as "a god" and a "translated being" and was "preparing for the Second Coming", and that she had uttered threats to kill anyone who interfered with those preparations, including Charles himself if things came to that. He also suspected she was having an affair with Chad Daybell. Charles later withdrew the divorce petition saying he wanted to try to work things out with Lori.

A few months later in June, Lori Vallow's niece Melani Boudreaux filed for divorce from her husband Brandon. This will become pertinent. At the time, Brandon Boudreaux says he was surprised by the development because he had been under the impression the marriage was solid and happy, and noted that the bomb dropped after Melani seemed to have joined a "cult" that her aunt belonged to.

One month afterwards on July 11, 2019, Charles Vallow was killed at Lori Vallow's home by Lori's brother, Alex Cox. The couple was still separated at this time, and Charles had come to the house as prearranged to take JJ to school when, according to Cox, he spontaneously began to attack Lori with a baseball bat, whereupon Cox intervened by shooting Charles. At the time, police did not file charges against Alex Cox.

In August, Vallow and her two children, along with her brother Alex and her niece Melani, moved from Arizona to Rexburg, ID, which is adjacent to Salem (where Chad Daybell and his wife lived). JJ attended school there briefly in September, but was withdrawn by Lori a few days after the school year began. That appears to have been the last time JJ was seen by anyone outside the family.

On October 2, Brandon Boudreaux was driving home from his gym in Gilbert, AZ, when he was shot at by an unknown assailant in a Jeep. The bullet struck the edge of the door above Boudreaux's head. The assailant fled, but police confirmed the assailant's vehicle was registered to Charles Vallow, who by this time had been dead for three months.

Two weeks later, on October 19, Chad's wife Tammy Daybell was found dead in her bed at home. The death at that time was not ruled suspicious, though a few days earlier Tammy had reported to police that a masked man had shot at her with a paintball gun for unknown reasons.

Less than a month after his wife's death, Chad married Lori. Police say they went to Hawaii to conduct the marriage, and purported witness statements said that at that time Chad and Lori had claimed to be childless. Within days of their returning to Rexburg, JJ was reported missing by his extended relatives.

So that is where things stand. Development-wise, first it was simply JJ's and Tylee's disappearance and their parents refusal to cooperate with police, and while investigating this police found out about and began looking into Tammy Daybell's death, and in turn looking into Charles Vallow's killing and the divorce situation, and rumors of the "religious cult" connection began to surface. Later the drive-by shooting in Arizona came to be connected. A more concise timeline of relevant events can be found here.

Chad and Lori Daybell released a statement through their lawyer after the first news reports about their missing children, essentially saying that they had no comment, but there has been no communication since then. Tammy Daybell's body was exhumed for a second autopsy in December, but the results have not been released.

Maybe I should point out that there is some speculation at this point that JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan are dead, rather than simply having been hidden somewhere.

Granted, "they're dead" is a very common speculative theory in missing-children cases, and although it is often eventually shown to be true, there's no direct evidence that it is in this case yet. I personally considered that theory rather premature and perhaps alarmist, until I read the detail that while getting married in Hawaii, Chad and Lori had been telling people unfamiliar with the family that they didn't have any non-adult children. More specifically, Lori had acknowledged having had a daughter named Tylee but claimed she had "died years ago".

Of course it's hard to say why the newlywed couple had decided to omit their young children's existence from the lives they presented to other people, and one might even say it was inconsequential; but, honestly, I don't buy that. If they wanted to pretend they didn't have young kids to avoid dealing with that baggage in their social interactions with strangers, they could have simply said "all of our children are grown". But Lori's telling people about Tylee, who would still be a minor child, but claiming that she had died years ago, was unnecessary in the service of that end and in the greater context of the case is frankly ominous.

Seems like the kids are dead, or are alive but hidden captives. Either could happen with an insane cult.

Not...quite sure what to make of this one. All in the Family meets Natural Born Killers?

Basically, lots of bodies piling up and people going poof around Lori and Brother Alex? I think I know how this tale wraps up.

Oh I forgot to add a couple of details - they're in there among the links but they might be easy to miss:

1. Lori's husband before Charles Vallow, Tylee's biological father Joseph Ryan, died in 2018 presumably from a heart attack.

2. Lori's brother Alex Cox, the one who shot and killed Charles Vallow allegedly in self defense, is also dead. He died on December 12, coincidentally the day after Tammy Daybell's body was exhumed for a new autopsy. The details of Cox's death haven't been made public yet.

Yeah, it's crazy how many of the players keep turning up dead as the plot continues to unfold. Not counting the missing kids, what is the body count to date?

Looks like 5 formally in the ground, another who had a bullet inches from his head (unknown assailant driving a car registered to one of the people dead for months), two former husbands of Lori are whereabouts unknown, Lori and Chad are whereabouts unknown, and the two kids are whereabouts unknown.

Not sure the cult has much to do with this, other than being a place psychos gravitate towards to wield power.

My impression is "the cult" is really just Chad and Lori Daybell and the handful of immediate family and friends bought into their shared apocalyptic fever-dream. But I think the religious angle IS a key part of it. Lori's niece bought into it and talked about it enough to give her husband the impression she had joined a cult. Charles Vallow's divorce filing seems to corroborate that Lori's erratic behavior and threats on his life were religiously-centered as well.

My speculation is that the whole business originated with Chad, who after all had been writing novels based on this theme for years. Somehow Lori met him and they decided to do the end-times podcast, and that is where the Manson-family-esque plotting began. Chad's and Lori's actual spouses were killed and they immediately married each other; Lori's niece Melani's husband was obviously meant to be killed in the same way, but at any rate she also joined them. I believe it's likely that Lori's brother helped her with the plot to kill her husband, and he himself has now died of undisclosed causes soon after the authorities began positively investigating the Daybells, so take from that what you will.

Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell located in Hawaii, missing siblings not found

The two children -- Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17, -- were not found with the couple in Kauai, Hawaii, according to authorities. Their mother was ordered to physically produce the two children before a court in Idaho within five days, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.

Kauai Police pulled over Lori Vallow, 46, and Chad Daybell, 51, around 3:30 p.m. as they were riding in a black Ford Explorer along the Kuhio Highway, East Idaho News reported. The rental vehicle pulled into the parking lot of the Kauai Beach Resort. They were each put into separate police SUVs as officers executed a search warrant on the vehicle. Their vehicle was then taken away by tow truck. Police also executed a search warrant of their home in Princeville, Hawaii. The couple was detained briefly but not arrested. Federal authorities and eastern Idaho law enforcement aided in carrying out the warrants.

Lori Vallow was served with a child protection order to physically produce the two children to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare in Rexburg, Idaho within five days or risk being subjected to civil or criminal contempt of court, Fox 10 Phoenix reported, citing the Madison County Prosecutor's Office. The couple disappeared in November and have been wanted for questioning about the children's whereabouts. East Idaho News released a video of the couple walking after they were released from custody in Hawaii – giving minimal response to a reporter who insistently asked about the children’s wellbeing...

Really weird that it took so long to find them, if they went to the islands. They were reported to have lived on Kauai for years (chance of recognition high) and rented an Explorer, and presumably flew there (ID issues).

The result of the weird circumstances of this case, I suppose. The relatives who asked for the welfare check don't have the correct legal standing to report the children as missing persons, so there was no AMBER alert, or federal involvement. So the various cases in Arizona and Idaho stayed local. There wouldn't have been any flags if the couple had, say, driven to Denver and bought a plane ticket to Hawaii there. It was known that Lori Vallow once lived in Hawaii, and possibly went there for her marriage to Chad, but without a known current address there couldn't be a search warrant. I tend to think it was the case that they were indeed recognized eventually in Kauai and that's how police were finally able to draft the appropriate search warrants.

I'll be massively disappointed if authorities didn't put surveillance on the couple. Two missing kids is a big deal. For now I'm putting aside all the other chaos and mayhem surrounding this family. The multiple deaths are explainable, the drive-by not so much.

So is Chad trying to pull a David Koresh and get all the women for himself? Seems weird to for the niece's husband to get shot at after the divorce.

It certainly could be; many cults turn out to be all about the women when it comes down to it; but then, many other cults turn out not to be. Chad Daybell may not even be the cult "leader"; that's pure speculation on my part.

It seems important that Chad did not marry Lori until both their original spouses were dead. It might be the case that Lori's niece is also supposed to marry another male cult member but for religious reasons that can't happen as long as she is already married - and perhaps the cult doesn't recognize legal divorce as legitimate, and that explains why members' extant partners wind up dead - it's the only "valid" annulment in God's eyes.

What are you talking about, here? There is no 'correct legal standing' in Idaho to report a missing person, nor is there even a minimum amount of time before reporting. Nor so for the Feds or AMBER system. The relatives could have reported the missing persons in November, and the nationwide alerts would have gone up, instead of relying on home pages and reddit.

I'm talking about this, from that page:

Quote:
A missing person is someone whose whereabouts is unknown to a parent, caretaker or others who have normal contact with the person.
It may be debatable whether out-of-state relatives might have standing to report someone in another state missing because they haven't gotten a phone call from them in a while, but it's a moot question if the child's actual parents - both of them - say they're not missing.

No, it's not really debatable. They have full legal standing to file a missing person report, despite your odd assertion to the contrary.

Wrong again, as evidenced by police checking with Arizona in the OP and returning the next day with a search warrant. What the parents claimed amounted to jack **** to Idaho PD.

The Rexburg police did not ask for and serve a search warrant because they found out that the kid was not with the family friend in Arizona. According to the timeline I linked, they were asked by authorities in Arizona to serve a search warrant on their behalf. That the child could not be found was certainly a point of interest to both parties, but even so, he was not at that time considered a "missing person", which is self-evident by the fact that (again) no AMBER alert was issued, and in fact the Rexburg police did not issue any public statements until December 20th about wanting to find the children, nearly a month after the welfare-check incident, indicating that was likely the earliest time at which the kids were formally considered missing.

It's interesting to note that the Daybells still haven't been charged with anything, and they were never arrested in Hawaii. They were detained long enough for search warrants to be executed on their rental vehicle and their rental house there, and that's it. Since they have been served a court order to produce the children in Idaho by Thursday, though, that could change if they don't show up.

See, that's what I'm wondering about. Why didn't the relatives report a missing person after the initial Daybells lying to cops thing? Calling for a welfare check suggests that they had made other attempts and were not answered satisfactorily. Calling the cops on family is usually a declaration of war.

And relatedly, by what authority are the couple demanded to return to Idaho and produce the kids (I don't think it would be a good idea to physically do so now). Academic point, but there it is. I imagine their lawyer will argue along those lines?

eta: I expect them to take a flight out of Kauai tomorrow, and that flight land in Idaho. I expect an Idaho State Trooper to keep them in sight till they show up at court, presumably empty handed. Then what?

Alternatively, they may have wanted their last days to be spent in the islands. Nice view on the way out, providing they don't take anyone else with them.

Chad has a sailboat and they're going to try and make it to Fiji.

Oooohhh, I forgot about those yahoos. It's a bane of having the attention span of a Fijian goldfish. I still blame Greta.

FYI: Lori D gave an FY to the PD.

The hoe pulled a no-show in Idaho. No kids, no dice.

Kauai 5-0 on standby to extradite the psychos at Idaho's request, but the contempt of court charge is a misdemeanor there, $5k and/or 5 days in the pokey, max.

Therein lies the rub, though - taking a contempt penalty doesn't make whatever responsibility the defendant shrugged off (a court order in this case) just evaporate into the aether. At the same time as the judge finds them in contempt of the previous court order, he or she will likely issue a new order to produce the children by a new deadline, which may very possibly be around or exactly the time at which they are expected to finish their custodial sentence, and failure would constitute a new, separate contempt offense for which a new sentence can be imposed. In theory (on rare occasions, in practice) judges can continue to find and re-sentence for contempt indefinitely.

But I don't think it will take too long. Surely eventually the factual lack of contact between the Daybells and the minor children known to be in their custody will be charged as child abandonment, which is good for a lot more than five days.

Lori reportedly believes the End of the World is July 2020. Wonder if she is going to try and stall till then? Doubt it, but maybe. I'm putting money on going out in a blaze of glory, island style. Or maybe more likely, milk out living on Kauai as long as they can before they get their pretty new digs of his and her prison cells.

So what could they claim? The kids are runaways? Plausible for the 17 yr old, not so much for the 7 yr old.

Claim that the grandparents (who initially requested the welfare check) actually have them? Brazen, but plausible, and might cause enough confusion to buy time till Doomsday in July.

Best bet? Do anything to stay out of prison as long as possible. Not many likely happy endings on tap here.

A particularly ominous development...

On October 1st, Lori rented a storage unit. It has been opened by law enforcement executing a warrant for anything related to the kids' whereabouts. You probably can guess where this is heading.

Kid stuff, including clothes, toys, bikes, photo albums. Yes, specifically of JJ and Tylee.

A man who appears to be Dead Brother Alex is recorded loading and unloading the unit with different things on different days. This is not good.

eta: something a little odd: they say she rented a 10 x 10 unit, and show the door to it, approx 10'. But the pic of the interior with the bikes is much smaller, more like 5 x 5

Do you think that bicycle is only 4 feet long? Maybe, but it's more likely they're just wrong about the unit being 10 x 10. I do not think the door they show is 10 feet long.

FWIW, $53 sounds incredibly cheap for a 10 x 10 to me, but that probably depends on the area.

Looking more closely, the police images taken of the blanket draped over the opening, definitely show a smaller opening than the one the newspaper says was rented:

I think the news reporter in the video misidentifies the Daybells' unit.

I agree with you that them stashing the children's things in a storage unit in October is an ominous sign.

No, I'm saying the larger bike against the wall, if a 26", is 6feet +/- long, and the handlebars are turned so it fits in the uniit. If this were a 10'unit, that would be like a 12 foot long bike. Not happening.

At the beginning, they show a door clearly abt 10' long. But as I said, a small oddity, all things considered.

The only remaining hope is that the meager amount of stuff in there couldn't have been all the kids' possessions. Slim outside chance they are still alive somewhere?

Quite likely.

eta: I mean quite likely that the reporter misidentified, and the unit was the cheaper 5x5. As you noted, a 10x10 tends to be more expensive

If you look into the storage room behind the blanket, you can see the bicycle.
