And pseudo-historical nonsense. Read that phrase recently.

Quote:
Andrew Warren is the duly elected State Attorney for Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County/Tampa, FL. Elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, Andrew Warren’s time in office has been defined by common-sense criminal justice reforms that prioritize public safety, fairness, and justice through an evidence-based, problem-solving approach.

On August 4, 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blindsided Andrew Warren and the Tampa Bay community by unilaterally suspending Andrew from office. Claims made by DeSantis include that Andrew declined to prosecute cases related to an unconstitutional abortion ban and gender affirming healthcare laws that do not currently exist in Florida. Andrew has never had a case on these issues come before him. He simply exercised his right to speak out against them.

Ron DeSantis has nullified the votes of Hillsborough County residents by throwing out the results of the two fair and free elections that Andrew won to serve as State Attorney. This is DeSantis’ latest violation of the constitutional rights of Floridians to pursue his obsession with running for president. He has supported punitive measures against Florida businesses that dare speak out against his radical agenda, signed laws limiting free speech in Florida schools, and now is removing elected officials on baseless, political grounds.

Andrew filed suit in federal court to get his job back and to protect the rights of Floridians to have their votes count.
We must fight back now against Ron DeSantis’ abuse of power. If his attempt to overturn an election is not challenged, it would threaten the integrity and outcome of democracy throughout the state. The danger posed cannot be overstated. DeSantis cannot be allowed to throw out election results and nullify the people’s vote.

Be careful trying to make equivalences for US justification to own guns. As I said, there is no constitutional right in Australia to have any gun. None. Access is controlled solely by regulations as provided by law. And our laws are pretty damned strict - we have very firm laws about gun control. We also have a radically different attitude about guns. We consider them necessary but also dangerous tools.

While Wiki shows who can have what type of guns, you can't just rock up to a gun shop, say you are a "landowner", and buy a gun of a type a "landowner" is permitted to own, and then go blithely shooting the thing wherever you want. There's a whole lot of bumph and rigmarole and checking to go through first, and if you don't truly satisfy the requirements, no gun for you. Even when you do own a gun, there's more rules to follow. All the time.

As for handguns, nobody gets those, except police, trained security staff, and the military. Very few exceptions to that rule. So there is also no such thing as "open carry" and "concealed carry" laws. You are highly unlikely to encounter a handgun anywhere in Australia. So nobody is "carrying".

Do we have bad guys with guns? Sure. But few and far between, and they tend to go for internecine rivalry anyway. Not every second thickhead and thug in the street has a gun.

This whole hijack is besides the point.

Other countries manage to not have a school room full of children slaughtered every 7 picoseconds. That's the only difference that matters.

You are right. There are way more loops to jump through in Australia.

Like we have any hoops at all here in the U.S.

Just how do you all survive without a gun stuck in your belt or a rifle in the window of your pickup? How do you protect yourselves from the tyranny of the government and rapists, robbers, and murderers?

Dunno. We usually just laugh at people who behave wave guns about. Big gun, small dick. Two guns, no dick.

Waving guns about, or even just parading with them up the street, is likely to get you stopped and questioned by the police, and the weapon removed. It's actually illegal to brandish a weapon in public.

I don't normally post YouTube but the option is this long article from the Washington Post:

Florida let them vote. Then DeSantisís election police arrested them.

The YouTube version is a it more succinct:

Ron DeSantis' Election Fraud Arrests Are Already Unraveling

Quote:
Florida governor Ron DeSantis recently held a major press conference in a heavily Democratic area of the state to announce the arrests of 20 individuals by his new election fraud police. But it turns out that few, if any, of these cases are actually prosecutable because of the way that the Florida voter fraud law is written. So this big spectacle is already falling apart, and DeSantis looks even dumber than usual.

This reminds me of when the election deniers were shouting about Dem voter fraud and it turned out that the vast majority of election fraud happening was being committed by Republicans.

Republicans in power know that the only way they can win, now or in the future, is to cheat. Disenfranchisement, gerrymandering, voter ID, prohibiting mail-in, closing polling places, electing crooked voting officials, all of it.
It's Soviet Union elections all over again.
