They also falsely manipulated the number of cases to appear as a downward trend:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/sethcoh.../#18809ae66009
For the sake of everyone, I would be happy to believe that new cases are of some attenuated strain that does not put the population on a trajectory of huge numbers of people needing ventilators for extended periods.

But I have no rational reason for expecting this. It's just hope that some semblance of herd immunity will emerge from community spread.

They died for democracy. They will be missed, but remember that without their noble sacrifice, those states would have suffered under the yoke of Stalinist communism, and been forced to endure stay-at-home orders, social distancing, and face masks. I believe forcing people to wear certain attire was how the Holocaust got started .

At the moment it's estimated that mid single digits have or have had the virus. Herd immunity requires around ten times that. If herd immunity is achieved, 100,000 fatalities is barely scratching the surface

Exactly right and I am reposting something I've already posted from John Hopkins University of Medicine.
Quote:
We have listened with concern to voices erroneously suggesting that herd immunity may “soon slow the spread” of COVID-19. For example, Rush Limbaugh recently claimed that “herd immunity has occurred in California.” As infectious disease epidemiologists, we wish to state clearly that herd immunity against COVID-19 will not be achieved at a population level in 2020, barring a public health catastrophe...To reach herd immunity for COVID-19, likely 70% or more of the population would need to be immune. Without a vaccine, over 200 million Americans would have to get infected before we reach this threshold. Put another way, even if the current pace of the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the United States – with over 25,000 confirmed cases a day – it will be well into 2021 before we reach herd immunity. If current daily death rates continue, over half a million Americans would be dead from COVID-19 by that time. John Hopkins link
Not to mention, if 200 million Americans DID contract Covid-19, with the current 6% fatality rate, that means twelve million deaths.

Now Mitch McConnell is calling for people to wear masks. We're through the looking glass.

Quote:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday made an extensive pitch for Americans to don face masks as a means to begin returning the country to normalcy while the coronavirus remains a threat.

“There’s no stigma attached to wearing a mask. There’s no stigma attached to staying six feet apart,” the Kentucky Republican said at an event back in his home state, referencing social distancing guidelines recommended to stem the transmission of the coronavirus.

So that means if the actual death toll is less than 12 million, Trump did a wonderful job!

Here's a tweet posted this morning:

Another way to say this is that the Trump administration is still using a drug *pushed by Trump's donors* to treat veterans, even after discovering the drug *kills COVID-19 patients* and has no therapeutic benefit. At any other moment in US history, this would be a major scandal.
Yes, 'at any other time.' But this is trump time so hydroxychloroquine has to get on line with all the other scandals.

I don't know if I dare hope so after four years of disappointments, but it'd be wonderful if it happened.

Although... 538 does indicate that Trump's upward trend in popularity he's enjoyed since October may have peaked. Which is... okay, I would've been happier had his ratings been plummeting, but the fact that this is happening during a kind of crisis that should have made his popularity skyrocket is encouraging.

Dear Leader wants to sever US ties with WHO completely, now. Probably figures Americans aren't dying fast fast enough.

Masks Sold by Former White House Official to Navajo Hospitals Don’t Meet FDA Standards
Quote:
New information from the Indian Health Service calls into question why the agency purchased expensive medical gear that it now cannot use as intended.
The Indian Health Service acknowledged on Wednesday that 1 million respirator masks it purchased from a former Trump White House official do not meet Food and Drug Administration standards for “use in healthcare settings by health care providers.”

The IHS statement calls into question why the agency purchased expensive medical gear that it now cannot use as intended. The masks were purchased as part of a frantic agency push to supply Navajo hospitals with desperately needed protective equipment in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Interesting evidence that half the social network posts pushing to “open America” and opposing government anti-covid-19 rules are bots:

The trend toward lower “r” values over time is starting to be reversed in many states, a sign the epidemic is regaining strength.

AIUI, the idea is that the virus itself is harmless, and the 5G "activates" it within your body. The virus, of course, is made by Bill Gates to reduce the population.

That it would be easier to just engineer a virus that kills people without microwaves doesn't seem to have occurred to anybody.

Wait a sec.

Does this mean that ... that ... Bill Gates is GOD??!!!??!!!

I had my suspicions, but I didn't realize it had been confirmed.

He wants to go further than that. He wants immunity from legal action against the employers if they don't manage to keep up the pitiful protections that do exist.

Trump cannot admit he was wrong, ever. It's part of his narcissism disorder. It's predictable. It has been predictable since he started his term as POTUS. It's an absolute with Trump, not merely a 'usual' trend.

Old joke, updated for the times.

God decides to bring about the End of the World. To get the news out, he summons Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Bill Gates, gives them the low-down, and tells them to distribute the message.

Trump sends out a tweet: "The Awseome God, Jehovah, has told Me he's going to end the World next week. He's a Great friend and ally we can always count on! #MAGA! #OBAMAGATE!"

Xi Jinping writes a communique to be published in China. "We were wrong about the existence of God. He exists and is indeed the master of the universe. He has told me we should prepare for the end of the world next week."

Bill Gates starts typing an email. "Well, God considers me to be important enough to let me know His plans. He has personally assured me the next release of Windows 10 will not not miss its release date."

(It was funnier when it looked like Windows 95 would not ship in 1995.)

Pushed out of the news but let's not forget. From the Google/Wiki tracker. Arizona, Florida, Texas and Wisconsin relaxed the shutdown orders earlier than most other states. They're all on an upward trend. Not a steep one so I guess the state officials have decided they can 'live' with it.

The problem is Trump thinks he has a saucerful of secrets but in reality is that his ignorance shines on like a crazy diamond and his leadership abilities are buried on the dark side of the moon. Fortunately we have an opportunity in November to apply a final cut, as it were.

Keep in mind that Trump's popularity seemed to drop after his Charlottesville response. Of all the dumb things trump has done, it may have harmed him the most. Granted, his base may love them some racism, but not everyone does, and anything that reminds people about "neo-nazis are fine people" may harm him again.

Then again, it bounced back pretty quickly. I guess those "moderate Republicans" found a way to reconcile his racism.

The four states that began reopening early whose new case numbers indicate they do not yet have coronavirus under control have an oddity. They all show a pronounced dip on the same day last week -Tuesday May 26th, (Florida's was actually a day later, May 27th). Then they start climbing again. Not sure what this might mean but it does seem odd.

Below are two charts taken from the Google/Wiki tracker. The one on the left is four states who pushed to reopen faster than public health officals recommended. On the right are four states that have followed public health recommendations and have chosen caution. Notice a difference?

I know some people look to find a way to discredit everything. I've seen it 'argued' that tracking the rise in new cases is misleading. I don't know how it could be and the posters who make that claim never explain why it is misleading. I just take it for what they're worth, a yardstick you can use -- a pretty obvious yardstick -- to get a general idea of where we've been and where we're heading..

I see this said all the time and it just annoys me. Human beings have the ability to follow more than one thing at a time. And these are actually being tied together in coverage I'm seeing, as African-Americans are disproportionately affected by COVID and the economic damage.

Within a month, barring unforeseen developments, I will be back at my office. Also, I have decided to be a bit more risk taking, and will go to a hardware store in the near future. We've ordered take out. Yes, we're throwing caution to the wind, at least as measured in this COVID 19 time.

Of course, I will be wearing a piece of cloth over my face, and yes I mean a piece of cloth. That's it. Homemade mask. Nothing special. The kind that offers me little or no protection, but does protect my colleagues. My colleagues will be doing the same, so we can collectively all have some level of protection compared to what we would have with bare faces.

What the heck is wrong with this country that I can't find an N95 mask or a face shield that would actually offer me some level of real protection? I understand that making hundreds of millions of anything is not something that happens overnight, but it can actually happen. It is a disgrace that it isn't happening.
