I agree. It was common knowledge his appearance would coincide with protests. Whether poor planning or a poor policy for protest/riot police on campus, it shouldn't have escalated from what was a small portion of the student population causing trouble.

This is just a terrible analogy. Students protesting a controversial figure is equivalent to the KKK in a small town rallying in front of a black family burning crosses? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you just hastily threw together a counter point but honestly, that is not close to a comparable situation.

As to the Feds coming in to make a change, what specific thing are we going to be hoping they do exactly? Squash civil protests as a defense for freedom of speech? No good there. Take over local law enforcement to react to civil unrest in a harsher way? With what authority? Can't have Feds waiting for something to happen at every college in the country.

Seems like something local government should be handling. Whatever damage is done, there will be a cost to someone. Let them have their voices heard if they want any specific changes to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Here's the problem. They don't support or care about you one bit more than that 'other side.'

You are useful to them in terms of having someone to hide behind and take batons to the face for them after they throw the brick and run away like cowards.

If you object to being used like that, they'll say you're not showing solidarity with them. If you refuse to engage in violence with them, they'll say you lack resolve. If you ask them to stop throwing bricks, they'll tell you how dare you oppress them. If you eject them from your march, they'll say you're traitors. If you finger them to the cops for committing crimes and threatening the public goodwill of your movement, they'll call you collaborators.

Are you seeing a pattern here?

Joking aside,I find that some people here think violence is OK to keep someone from speaking to be disgusting. Frankly, they are no better then Trump when it comes to free speech.

a homosexual proto-fascist internet celebrity has the same right to free speech as anybody else.
I find the people who..quite rightly.condemn Trump for his attacks on free speech but then approve the Berkeley actions to be incredible hypocrites.

I like imagining all the hypocrites out there too. Reinforces my beliefs and all, cause typically my imagined hypocrisy in another has a mirror image of no such hypocrisy in my beliefs on the same subject.

I guess I just genuinely see all this stuff as a tempest in a teapot - if people wanna hear milo they still can.

THis is more culture war flashpoint, and this thread demonstrates that quite quickly - than it is a signal event in the eternal fight for the protection of individual rights from adverse rollback.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.... I guess?

Wake me up when there's something interesting happening...

When someone is saying they want to deprive you of the home and life you have built in America would you be polite in your response? It's a question of perspective. You think you're protecting America, they are rightly fearful of their future. I don't agree with their tactics, but I do understand them.

After a bit of digging, they seem to have been posted by last week by Breitbart, who was quoting the San Diego Union-Tribune, who were probably referencing an online survey done by Berkeley in 2015.

I'm providing that simply as information; I am not going to defend the reliability of online surveys or the relevance of a 2015 survey to the current political environment.

I'd say it was only a few individuals who ruined it, but it was not.

Dozens of masked students started fires, stormed barricades, threw bricks, fireworks and "smoking objects" at police, knocked over and vandalized a generator and light that were set up, smashed windows....I forget the rest.
Dozens, you say. How many students are there at Berkeley?

I wonder if they were actually students at all.
And there's that, of course.

I guess Berkeley, along with government officials all over the state, don't care that 74% of Californians are against sanctuary cities.
You guess this from the actions of dozens of anarchists, of whom an unknown number are students.

Ironically, the reason we all hate anarchists is that they are narcissists.

4 years is a lot of time. What the dynamic will be in a year is hard to judge let alone 4. I can't imagine that if the orange turd continues to cause this much turmoil that he will be reelected. He didn't have a majority in this election. But Trump and the Republicans I'm sure will be hard at work to disenfranchise as many voters as possible.

This is why Republicans will pass more laws to make voting inaccessible. For example, in NC, Republicans already passed bills that allow only Republicans to be in the state election committee during election years. Democrats have "equal" access by having the committee during non-election years.

Hell, it doesn't even sound plausible.
I was trying to be nice about it.

Hypocrites.

You might want to start with some reading.

Yiannopoulos' sexuality
Quote:
While Yiannopoulos is gay, he has stated that gay rights are detrimental to humanity, and that gay men should "get back in the closet".[98] He has described being gay as "aberrant" and "a lifestyle choice guaranteed to bring [gay people] pain and unhappiness".[99] He has said that he would love to experiment with conversion therapy, but not because he thinks it'll work.[100]
In September 2015, Yiannopoulos guest-starred on Joe Rogan's YouTube show, The Joe Rogan Experience. During the show, Yiannopoulos claimed to have lost his virginity at age 13 "in an interracial fivesome with a drag queen".[101] Some have accused Yiannopoulos of exaggerating his homosexuality for comic effect, and falling back on homophobic tropes in doing so.[16]

Dangerous Faggot Tour

In late 2015, Yiannopoulos began a campus speaking tour called "The Dangerous Faggot Tour", encompassing universities in the United States and Great Britain. A number of his scheduled speeches in Great Britain were cancelled.[102] Although most of his American speeches were not cancelled, some were met with notable protest ranging from vocal disruptions to cancellation via the heckler's veto. The journalist Audrey Goddard analysed his speech at the University of Pittsburgh. He concludes that Yiannopoulos spends the "majority of the time voicing his opinions with little to no factual statements accompanying them", which he thought was ironic taking in account how Yiannopoulos repeatedly insisted "that he was just stating "facts.""[103]

Oh that explains it! I thought they just didn't want to be mistaken as French.

There are many levels between those two things, and they are each appropriate in different circumstances.
Perhaps one level between a broken window and full-scale war is beating a person to a level of unconsciousness.

People being beaten

This isn't really about the students - of course most did not get violent. I'm hearing that over 100 did, but numbers are all over the place. I wonder how many are cool with it.

It doesn't matter. My first reaction was to knee-jerk hate Berkeley, but were these people paid to do this? Was it sponsored? It's the bigger picture I'm concerned about, not Berkeley.

People are getting attacked - not widespread, but condoning this only adds to that fire.

Your gal lost the election. Deal with it. The racists and KKK handled the first black president better than this. These people are exactly what they are protesting against.

Sure that's reasonable. Your side proves their choice of wearing brown shirts and you blame Trump.
