Some shops are frustrated by the non-compliance of many Swedish shoppers, which again stresses the difference between recommendations and mandatory restrictions:

This is interesting beyond Sweden:
Quote:
* In a Novus poll, more men than women report having Covid-like symptoms for over 10 weeks.
* But more women than men have visited the clinics that were started for patients with long-term symptoms.
* The National Board of Health and Welfare believes that the study provides important information but that we still know too little to get a picture of the full extent of long Covid.
More men than women report Covid-symptoms beyond 10 weeks (RadioSweden, April 5, 2021)

It contradicts the idea that more women than men get long Covid. It may simply be due to the fact that men are less likely to contact the health-care system in general.

In our local news, both the Selkirk and the Eyemouth clusters have been suppressed and there's no sign so far of any other clusters arising. Now that the stats pages have caught up from the holiday delay we have no neighbourhoods with more than two cases in the w/e 3rd April, and in fact only four cases in the entire region in that period. So at least 26 of the 30 neighbourhoods had no cases at all (I suspect Eyemouth at least, if not Selkirk also, still has two on the go, so it could be that the rest of the region is actually clear). By the way I overestimated the population of the area, it's actually given as 115,510 in the data tables.

We did have two new cases reported today but it's hard to say where these will go because there were some late cases entered and in the end they get allocated to the date of sampling not the date of reporting. We're still all walking round each other and putting on masks to go into shops etc, but it's increasingly likely the only danger is from strangers coming in.

Even some long-haulers are Tegnell fans!

Quote:
Tegnell, who is sixty-four and tall, with round glasses, has often said that lockdowns are not supported by science and that the evidence for mask-wearing is “weak.” His stance is a startling departure from the scientific consensus, but he maintains that if other countries were led by experts rather than politicians, more nations would have policies like Sweden’s. The world has been left gawking. American liberals were shocked that the country of Greta Thunberg could seem so scientifically backward. Right-wing activists in Minnesota held up signs during anti-lockdown protests reading “Be Like Sweden.” Within the country, Tegnell has become an icon of Swedish exceptionalism, believed to be excessively reasonable, levelheaded, and rational. Supporters praised him for not giving in to political panic. Wearing a mask in Sweden was sometimes seen as a signifier of being anti-science.
(...)
A healthy person “can’t wear a mask in Sweden,” my mother-in-law told me, in October. “People will look at you like you are a very strange person.” The Swedish health agency communicated to the public that there was insufficient evidence that masks prevent transmissions, that they are often used incorrectly, and that they could be used as an excuse not to distance properly, which would be harmful.

Oh yes. We're still in lockdown, supposedly, so strangers shouldn't be coming in, but there's nothing to stop them. Jeez, I'm just about to cross the county boundary myself to go riding. I'll be in the open air and distanced the whole time, but there's nobody to stop me going into someone's house.

This isn't a catch-up from the holiday weekend, is it? (We had five new deaths and that will be a catch-up to some extent as we've had four days with the registry offices closed.) Also just 289 new cases (no catch-up there), so still going in the right direction.

It is. Wednesday's number of registered deaths tend to be higher than Tuesday's.

It was never about freedom as such, about the people of Sweden simply being too rebellious to be locked down. It was always about the economy, about the employers' unrestricted access to their workforce.

Another Swedish opera outbreak:

Quote:
Operan i total nedstängning (SVT.se, April 8, 2021 - 15:48)
The Royal Opera is empty. No audience will be admitted this spring and the staff will stay at home after 15 of the employees have been diagnosed with covid-19.
Vice director Birgitta Svendén fear that it will not even be fully opened in August.
During the Easter weekend, infection was discovered in several departments. Then the management decided to close down the opera completely.
And now they declare that there will be no performances for audiences this spring.
However, this is not a cluster infection, Svendén informs.
The opera in total lockdown

It is even more scary that this is not a cluster but appears to be the result of general community spread.

Birgitta Svendén? Even I have heard of her, if it's the same one. Very famous singer.

The New York Metropolitan Opera closed its doors rather suddenly in mid-March last year and at present there is no date for re-opening. On about 16th March they began allowing free access to one of their normally paid-for online opera streams every day. I've been watching these since about May, and still do although they're repeating rather a lot now. (Today's offering is Eugene Onegin, filmed in 2017.) How anyone could think that operating a live operahouse under present circumstances is possible, I don't know.

(How the NY Met thinks it can just furlough its orchestra without pay is something else. I heard they had given them one paycheck recently, but I don't know how these musicians are surviving. But opening the opera house is not the answer.)

In local news, the region next to us, Dumfries and Galloway, has now achieved the first stage of elimination, no new cases for a full 7-day period. Good on them, as I thought they had a cluster in Nithsdale which was proving problematic. We're still on four cases for week ending 5th April and we had another case today, but we don't have any local area with more than two new cases in the week so there's no sign of a cluster blowing up.

If we can do it too then there will be a big stripe across southern Scotland which has the virus suppressed, but at three new cases in the past two days, we're not there yet. And it's early days.

I guess opera singers depend more on the full use of their lungs than most people so many may lose their jobs permanently. Lack of free health care for all is particularly bad in a pandemic, obviously, but so is lack of sick leave and unemployment benefits. It makes some people go to work sick and turns them into anti-restriction covidiots because they can't pay their bills.

If Birgitta Svendén sang Erda on stage at Bayreuth in 1983, then I was in the audience.

I sing and play wind instruments as an amateur. I am absolutely bloody determined not to get this virus, and have been from the very first, because I value my lung function. (I won the "long note competition" on treble recorder at a summer school a few years ago.)

New article about Boris Johnson, Sunetra Gupta, the Great Barrington Declaration and the Swedish strategy:

Quote:
Last September, Gupta gave a private online briefing to prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Before the meeting, which was also attended by Sweden’s state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, Johnson was reportedly on the verge of ordering a short “circuit-breaker” lockdown to stall the rising COVID numbers in line with advice from members of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).

Gupta told the prime minister that lockdown was unnecessary and that herd immunity could be achieved “in the order of three to six months”, according to reports in The Sunday Times.

The weekly report from Sweden's Public Health Agency for week 13 (March 29 to April 4, 2021):
Quote:
In week 13, approximately 38,400 confirmed cases of covid-19 were reported in Sweden, approximately as many as in week 12. Approximately 316,000 individuals were tested in week 13, slightly less than week 12, but remained at a high level compared to earlier in the pandemic. The proportion of positive samples was about 12 percent.

Per capita, the "high level" of testing is still less than the number of people tested in Denmark on a daily basis and the percentage of positives in Sweden remains extremely high.
But there are also countries like Australia:

Quote:
For context of that image for Swedes, the population of Queensland is about 5.2 million, a little over half of Sweden's.
6 deaths. 1502 cases. For the entire pandemic.
At the moment here in Sweden we get around that many cases and deaths about every 6 hours or so.

Yeah, when I had a look they were speaking Swedish.

I've encountered a lot of people who say, well we missed the boat, if we'd gone in at the start we could have eliminated the virus but we let it get out of hand and now it's so widespread we can't possibly do it. They completely fail to get the point. It's now too late for all the people who have died, and who have suffered badly from the virus, of course. We can never roll back all the deaths. But no matter how widespread the virus is, it can be stopped and the earliest you can start is always now.

Of course the more nasty variants you allow to get loose the harder it is, but anything can be stopped if you try hard enough. The problem is that too many politicians think tens or even hundreds of thousands of deaths is preferable to trying hard enough.

Well they're nearly all old people, it doesn't matter. And then one man aged 99 dies, not of covid, and you'd think it was the biggest tragedy since the crucifixion.

In the next couple of months, when all 60+ have been vaccinated, few will die, and long Covid doesn't seem to worry anybody much. In Denmark, the government is under pressure from the opposition to open up even more as if 700 new infections a day aren't more than enough - with 70 new long-haulers every day.

I never understood how people could make themselves cry over dead monarchs. The Diana cult was absurd.

By the way, 1,000 or maybe 2,000 covidiots are walking down my street as I am writing this.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Covid-19, but a former Swedish PM upset a lot of Scandinavians yesterday - Norwegians and Finns (even though Finland wasn't mentioned) more so than Danes, I think. April 9, 1940, was the day when Nazi Germany invaded Denmark and Norway:

Quote:
The defense forces of in 1940 weren’t stellar, but still stronger than and in particular than . Had Hitler decided to invade it would have been a fight.

Hög smittspridning men låga dödstal i Sverige (April 9, 2021 - 22:02)
The Swedish death toll due to covid-19 was among the lowest in Europe during the last 14-day period, according to statistics from the European Infection Control Agency, compiled by DN.

Only Iceland, Liechtenstein, Denmark, Norway and Finland had a lower number of deaths during the period.

On the other hand, Sweden had one of Europe's highest spreads of infection, almost three times as high as the average.

On Friday, Sweden had 625 new confirmed cases of infection per day per one million inhabitants, while the average in Europe is 231 new confirmed cases per day and per one million inhabitants. In the United States, the figure is 205.

Only the micro nations San Marino with 711 and Andorra with 630 had higher averages.
High spread of infections but low death toll in Sweden

I wonder if this is due to Sweden's delayed reporting of deaths. It may also be because the other European countries have knocked down their rate of new infections but still have a high number of ICU patients to contend with from the latest wave.

Sweden’s daily #coronavirus case rate far higher than Brazil or India (CoronaHeadsUp, April 10, 2021)

Denmark just overtook the Faroe Islands in the number of per capita SARS-CoV-2 tests:
Worldometers Tests 1M pop (total)
#1 Gibraltar: 6,525,785 (219,808)
#2 Denmark: 5,071,761 (29,457,120)
#3 Faroes: 5,035,872 (246,793)
Since Gibraltar is leading in vaccinations (and in deaths per million), they will probably be able to abandon large-scale testing soon.

Scotland is getting better. We only had 199 cases reported today and the 7-day rolling mean is on 36.6 cases per 100K population (2,000 cases in 7 days) for the whole country. We have also vaccinated nearly 50% of the country with one dose of vaccine and just over 10% have had both doses.

My own region is still on 4 cases in w/e 9th April, which is 3.5 per 100K population. We are on a positivity rate of 0.2% although the country as a whole is on 1.8%.

However the children are going back to school after the Easter holidays today, and we're removing travel restrictions in two weeks. My guess is stand by for incoming. We'll have groups meeting socially where very few people have yet been vaccinated, so although the chance of them then taking it back home to infect elderly relatives is much reduced, I still expect a surge in cases.
