All the EU countries (and associated countries like Norway and Iceland) will be ramping up vaccinations in this and the coming weeks due to increased deliveries of vaccines, especially Pfizer. I'll be getting my first shot on Sunday.

Some people won't benefit from the vaccines:
Kjent coronafornekter døde med coronasmitte (VG.no, April 9, 2021)
Well-known corona denier died with corona infection
I don't know if they use "with" in his honor ...

He wasn't tested, and he didn't seek medical help. The infection was detected post mortem.

Quote:
According to the media reports, just days before his death, he hosted two illegal gatherings at a barn on his property on March 26 and 27. Several attendees have since tested positive for coronavirus and had passed the virus onto their close contacts.

"We don't know how many or who took part in the arrangements, but ask all participants to take a corona test as soon as possible," police said in a press release, according to newsinenglish.no.
Man who said Covid was a hoax dies from virus after hosting illegal parties (Wion, April 19, 2021)

We've just had our major relaxation of restrictions confirmed for Monday. Most things will be open and there will be no travel restrictions. People will probably just ignore the remaining restrictions like no socialising in private houses. People are being asked to take two antigen tests before travel to the northern and western isles, but I don't see anything about it being enforced. Meanwhile my own region, with virus levels almost as low as in the islands, is simply being opened up to everyone.

We've also been told that more restrictions will be lifted on 17th May and even more on 7th June and there will be a return to normal in July. So much for acting according to the numbers of new cases and not setting out rigid dates. I'll just bet she'll carry right on with this timetable even if we're seeing the start of a new surge in June.

I think they're planning on a relaxed spring and summer come what may and just hoping the third wave isn't too bad when it comes. They may be lucky if they keep the vaccination programme up to speed and we aren't over-run by a vaccine-resistant variant, but it's a hell of a risk. The trouble is we're opening up with just 50% of the population having had a single dose of the vaccine and less than 15% fully vaccinated. Vaccine uptake has been (purposefully) very uneven, with nearly all the over-50s having had one dose and most of the over-60s having had both. This has profound implications for community transmission.

You could practically open up all the social activities partaken of by the elderly without much risk. The herd immunity threshhold will almost certainly be met in these situations. But at the same time social gatherings mainly attended by the under-40s are going to be nowhere near herd immunity. Vaccination % will be negligible. And these are the very sorts of gatherings likely to turn into superspreader events.

I'm nervous.

Excellent Lonni Besançon thread about the disastrous Swedish strategy in three waves:
Quote:
With the third wave in sight, still nothing has changed. FHM sticks to their non-evidence based ideas and still in January/February 2021 was not recommending to wear a mask in crowded place.
Lonni Besançon on Twitter (April 20, 2021)
Since it isn't long and comes with a short introduction, it's a good place to start for people who haven't been following Sweden's pandemic response from the start.

A Canadian Tegnell in the UN:
Quote:
Dr. John Conly says N95 masks cause 'harms,' focus should be on physical distancing
(...)
Dr. John Conly, an infectious diseases physician and professor of medicine at the University of Calgary, not only denied that aerosol transmission is a primary route of transmission, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, but also said that N95 masks can cause "harms" — including acne.
Top Canadian WHO adviser under fire after downplaying airborne threat of COVID-19 (CBC.ca, April 21, 2021)
With both Giesecke and this guy as UN advisers, it is no wonder that it took them so long to recognize aerosol spread of the virus.

One year ago when Stockholm was close to having achieved herd immunity:
Quote:
Half a million people in Stockholm may already have had Covid-19.
According to the county administrative board, there are now "signs of herd immunity" in Stockholm - and in mid-May the spread will be under control, according to former state epidemiologist Johan Giesecke.
- When you reach 60 percent, you can be sure that it is about to decrease, he says
When the corona crisis is over in Stockholm - already signs of herd immunity

Bars, restaurants, museums and malls reopen in Denmark:
Folk stod i kø til fadøl og croissanter: 'Det smager af genåbning' (DR.dk, April 21, 2021)
People were standing in line for draught beer and croissants: 'It tastes like reopening'
It requires coronavirus tests that are no more than 72 hours old but apparently not face masks. I am afraid that this could be the beginning of a third wave since only about 20 percent have had the first shot so far and the spring temperatures aren't as high as last year. Besides, many publicans say that they won't control the test certificates of their regular customers since that would ruin the 'confidence' ...

Same sort of attitude here. It's pathetic. It means that people who would go out if it was possible to do so safely won't, because they can't trust that even the relaxed restrictions will be enforced or obeyed.

Many experts here are worried for the same reason: Nu flokkes danskerne på værtshus og restaurant – men det er ikke uden risiko, mener eksperter (TV2.dk, April 21, 2021)
Guests and a publican without face masks and a waitress with a face shield worn as a hat don't inspire confidence in the reopening.

Meanwhile in Finland the medics have been debating whether to offer the remaining 800,000 Astra Zeneca vaccinations to whoever wants it voluntarily (ATM you have to wait until you are called) or whether to donate them to a less fortunate country. (AZ stores well.) They are considering looking at Sputnik V (V as in adenoViral) when it is passed by the EMA regulators but I can't see Finns having much enthusiasm for that.

Other news is that people who have had their vaccination - most of them just the first - have only a 4% chance of getting Covid19. Four of these vaccinated people had it severely enough to be hospitalised. I don't know if this data is based on random testing or people reporting themselves sick.

He may not have been feeling very well, but since Covid-19 is a hoax, there was no reason to cancel, was there?
And since he never even went to see a doctor, he can't be accused of having had double standards. He was suffered from a very bad case of stupid, which is what killed him in the end. (He just happened to die with the hoax.)

The sell-by date of the AZ doses already delivered to Denmark is in June, but Denmark has started lending them to other countries or regions in other countries with more severe outbreaks: Latvia (I think) and Schleswig-Holstein: Denmark loans 55,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to neighbouring German state (EuroNews, April 21, 2021)

There have been several cases in Sweden where staff, vaccinated only once, spread the infection in nursing homes.

Sweden’s Public Health Agency recently said “several among its key figures have been granted police protection”, the site adds, while a member of the public said Tegnell should be “executed by a firing squad on live state television” when asked for his thoughts on the street in Stockholm.
In December, both King Carl XVI Gustaf and Prime Minister Lofven acknowledged that the Swedish approach had failed. “But with the Swedish public more divided than ever, politicians appear to increasingly deny the obvious”, OpenDemocracy reports. With the possibility of more lockdown restrictions not on the agenda, “the handling of the pandemic will inevitably leave Swedish society deeply scarred and divided”, the site adds.
Asked by The New Yorker how he felt about the shift in public mood, Tegnell said the number of deaths in Sweden “weighed on him”, adding: “I think this was a big frustration and feeling of failure for us.”
But he “remains steadfast” about the route Sweden has taken, the magazine adds, maintaining that “if other countries were led by experts rather than politicians, more nations would have policies like Sweden’s”.

The Netherlands also pursued herd immunity by infection at the beginning of the pandemic: Twitter thread.

How can they lend vaccinations? Not much use to anyone once used.

The same way you lend money, I assume, except for the interest!

I guess the idea is that other countries with an urgent need for the AZ vaccines get them faster than they would otherwise. They then owe them to Denmark at some point when the whole thing isn't as urgent anymore and they can then be shipped to other countries that need them, maybe free of charge to poor countries.

It's not so much about where we end up. It's about the people we infected on the way.

We're still seeing one to three deaths a day. Since all the really geriatric and vulnerable people had their vaccines a couple of months ago, I want to know who it is that's still dying and why.

We're down to only two cases in our region for w/e 18th April though. Apart from the islands, we're the best region at the moment.

The number of deaths a day is very similar to the current numbers in Denmark, Finland and Norway. Remember that some people hang on in ICUs for months before they either die or get better, but the average age of people who get hospitalized at this point in both Denmark and Sweden is younger than before the vaccinations started.
It will probably get younger still in the coming weeks.

I'm specifically talking about "deaths within 28 days of a positive test".

The last case in my region was on 17th April, so we're showing one case per week (0.9 per week per 100K people) for week ending 20th April, as these figures are given three days in arrears (to allow for recording by date of sampling rather than by date of reporting though having worked in labs all my life I don't see why that has to be as any LIMS will record date of sampling and these data should be just as easy to rank by as date of reporting). We haven't had any more cases reported since then as far as I remember, so if it stays that way we'll be down to zero in another four days.

If.

At that point, I think that they will start vaccinating children, maybe at the schools when the new schoolyear begins.

Aren't people hospitalized or in ICUs due to Covid-19 counted as Covid-19 deaths? I assumed that was the case. I can see why people outside of hospitals are considered cured (except for long-term effects) after one month, but it doesn't seem to make sense if Covid-19 patients are not considered to have died from the infection just because they live longer than 28 days after a test showed they were infected.

We have two different counts, one daily which is of people who die within 28 days of a positive test, which is the count I was referring to, and one weekly - always a higher number - of people who have had "covid" recorded on their death certificates.
