Careful Alan, that's actual biology you're quoting there. Don't get science mixed up with your usual ********.

Well, this thread was a fun read.

Alan, did you used to post on the Unexplained Mysteries forums? I distinctly recall your style of posting, yet back then it wasn't giant jet powered dragonflies, you went from hyraxes to dogmen to glowbirds, each of which you shoehorned all sorts of mutually exclusive stories into explaining.

And each time the threads followed the same pattern as this one. Wildly different eyewitness accounts all being shoehorned into the same explanation. For example, any accounts of a strange flying thing was a glowbird. Magical glowbirds that that could fly at tremendous speeds, had paralyzing magnetovision of some sort, were hyperintelligent and thus avoided humans by nesting in hidden caves, flew out over the sea to defecate to avoid leaving evidence, etc. and every second post justified with "IMO" or "IMV" as if posting that some validates the weirdness you're proposing.

Cryptids as being super intelligent and thus knows how to avoid humans seems to be a common trope amongst the cryptozoology crowd as an explanation for the paucity of evidence for whatever monster of the week they're hypothesizing.

Have glowbirds as a crytpid fallen out of favour with you and every eye witness account of flying things is now giant dragonflies?

I've found a connection between the Skinwalker Ranch investigation and the Devils's Footprint by a hypothesized 'dragonfly-common-ancestor-entity'. It's on page 114 of Hunt For The Skinwalker.

Quote:
"A single large print in the snow with two sharp claws protruding from the rear of the mark going a couple inches deeper...we found another one in an area of unmelted snow about twenty feet from the first but nothing else."

This means you've found nothing.

Any chance of answering JesseCuster's questions?

Not a chance. It appears that AL does not do questions and treats this discussion forum as a personal blog. Don't hold your breath on that one.

I laughed when I first saw the image, but who knows, maybe it's the real deal? It could be checked to see whether the image still exists which would exclude the cave-like paradelia explanation given:

Is this a 'bus-sized spider' off the coast of Mexico? UFO hunters claim they've found a giant 'insect' on a remote island using Google Earth

It is, in fact, the last resting place of Henry McSplat, a skydiver who forgot his parachute.

You're spot-on, pretty much everything you said is correct. This is how any believer of nonsense generally peddle's their crap around. Don't expect Alan to address any of this any time soon, for obvious reasons.

Here's another article detailing the fascinating tracheal system recently discovered in the wings of zenithoptera.

Quote:
Living, breathing wings might help explain how South America’s four or five species of morpho dragonflies make such a complicated blue color, says Guillermo Ferreira. (He’s now at the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil.) Blue pigment is rare in nature. And it’s nowhere on these wings. Instead, the wings look blue because a living layer cake of structures plays tricks with light. Perhaps they’re able to grow so complex because they get plenty of oxygen, he says.

One dragonfly that engages in such color trickery is the male Zenithoptera lanei. The tough inner layers of its wings contain nanoscale spheres sandwiched between blankets of black-pigment-filled nanolayers. (Nanoscale structures are those that are on the order of a billionth of a meter in size.) This setup can make blue light bouncing off of wings easy to see. On top are two more light-trick layers. Each of these is made of wax crystals. The uppermost crystals, Guillermo Ferreira finds, are shaped “like little leaves.” At the same time, the structures make other colors get in the way of each other, cancelling each other out.

Better blues might help a male scare off his rivals. And that would give him an advantage in competing for breeding territory around palm tree swamps. Guillermo Ferreira often sees a male dragonfly “rushing toward the rival, grabbing the wings, biting the wings and then sometimes biting the head.”

That leaves the male with a good chance of winning a mate, he says.
