I’m getting really peeved of by being told how I am feeling. And being told even those not in agreement with monarchy think she was a saint… No I don’t.

Darat, pro tip. Stop listening to the bloody BBC. Or at least turn on a radio station where they won't bother mentioning it. (Radio 3 hasn't said a word in my hearing yet today, though I expect the upcoming news bulletin might mention it.)

When someone who was reverenced dies, it really brings out the true nature of those who opposed their views. May she rest in peace, after a long life of being an inspiration to many.

Inspiration in what way? Were people being inspired to get themselves born into immense wealth and privilege?

They could have injected some youth into the Royal line by naming William.
However, perhaps Charles will rule for a year and step aside.

I need to go to the Co-op for some bread and milk. Can't put it off any longer. If I see a book of condolence or any flowers that aren't actually on sale, I may vomit.

The word you are struggling for is "revered".

And, no, not everyone revered her nor found her an inspiration. We did not fall for the hype and we know the history of our country and how the aristocracy obtained and maintained their positions of power and privilege. And it would be hypocritical to suddenly pretend otherwise now.

FFS, all the women in my immediate family did more for the folk of this country than Brenda: teachers, nurses, physios and the like, who actually worked for a living, rather than having dinner a lot.

I'd love someone to explain all the "work" Brenda did and what exactly is "inspirational" about having 3 months off every summer to doss around Balmoral, shooting grouse, then wearing floral cretone frocks.

As I said earlier, any grief is for her family and her family alone. It doesn't need to be shoved in the face of everyone else. It's all this nonsense which really gives the lie to the British stiff upper lip and not showing emotion.

Private Eye started to use it as a joke, don’t know when but must have been many decades ago and it caught on.

ETA:Apparently it was following that documentary that showed them being an ordinary family back in the 1960s, it was taking the piss making it sound like they were a working class family. (Lets not cringe at how the elite of PE thought about “the” working class at the time.)

I think it was after the documentary in .. late 60s/early 70s? that showed the Royals in their 'daily life' (all carefuly scripted of course), and the Eye sort of gave them 'normal' nicknames, like they were just a family on Emmerdale or soemthing.

Pity. What a great opportunity for Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May to reunite for one last* epic drive.

Personally I blame your lack of understanding of the term “head of state” and the responsibilities it entails.

Tell you what.

- Explain it to me like I'm 5.

- The explanation has to be functionally and objectively different from "meaningless figurehead."

- The explanation can't use the term/concept "Continuity of government."

A mummy head of state and a daddy love each other a lot and have special cuddles and a new head of state is delivered by the stork. That little child will grow up happily after ever.

My Aunt passed away recently and it was very sudden. We had been visiting with her every week on a Zoom call, and there was no sign whatsoever on our last call with her that she was in anything but fine health. However, she was 85. Her son found her in her chair, apparently doing some scrapbooking when she died. No autopsy was performed, but the most likely causes would be either heart failure or a stroke I think. Nobody knows for sure because like I said, there was no autopsy.

So it doesn't surprise me that she might have been just fine on Tuesday and dead on Thursday. These things can happen quite suddenly to people of advanced age, with little or no warning.

I thought Head of State was that thing a Mummy of State only did for a Daddy of State on his birthday of if she wanted new jewelry.

Depending on if your 5 year condition allows it you should google “Westminster system” and read until it’s your bedtime.

Always been surprised when people say of very elderly folk, “What did they die of?” As if “being very old” isn’t enough.

Can't remember the comedian in question but I heard a bit that was to the effect of:

"My 102 year old grandmother died."
"Oh I'm so sorry, what did she die of?"
"She was a 102 what do you think? A tragic skateboard accident at the X-Games?"

He was 92, and his heart had basically just run out of beats. Two days from frail but functional to dead doesn't seem the least implausible to me.

That's not a bad way to go.

There is usually something. But when the death is unsuspicious and the person is of such an age that "something" isn't unexpected, holding a full post mortem is in nobody's interests.

Dammit I knew I should have spent the last week of my life writing a treatise on the Westminster system suitable for a 5 year old……can you ever forgive me?

Tell you what….if you can give me your question in the form of a Socratic essay understandable by an alcoholic I’ll consider it

My great-grandfather was only 94 when he died from being struck by lightning.
