Hey there. I've been a professional sports handicapper for 40 years. I had a few things published back in my youth. "Scientists, Gamblers, and Magicians" in The Humanist, some op-eds and stuff. Anyway, everything in life has become political, and I have discovered that many if not most of my gambling compatriots are pretty much alt-right. I signed up here for both my sanity and to eventually post a link to my blog, since I'm looking for sane feedback.

I attended one of the original CSICOP conventions way back at Buffalo and have followed Randi and Nickell forever. Oh yeah, my handle is my name. I'm not really into the whole anonymity thing.

Stay safe!

Talking Hello

I join this forum to hopefully talk about the Amanda Knox case. Which how learn about this forum in the first place. Which might lead to discussions of other subjects in the future.

Hi redietz, welcome! Sounds like you have some interests that would intrigue this motley crew of Forumites. I'm sure if life goes back to normal, you'll see that we have a few Forum members who still make their way to CSICOP and whatever skeptic conferences are available these days. Welcome, enjoy reading and posting!

I'm still amazed (and frankly baffled) at the length of time that discussion has been running... and is still predominantly on topic.

I heard once that the two most superstitious professions were actors and sailors, because both depend heavily on factors that are outside their control.

Well, that's interesting because most professional sports bettors I've known have been the least superstitious people, and our daily bread is beyond our control, or at least once removed from our direct control.

Skeptic here. Been that way for a while, but getting deeper into it lately reading lots of books and such. Looking to find some like minded peeps here, and maybe some not like minded peeps.

Well I suppose it's a good time to reintroduce myself. I joined five and half years ago, stopped posting (for no particular reason) about three and a half years ago. And today I decided to come back (again for no particular reason).

Some of you might have guessed from my profile pic that I'm Irish, and some leg work will even tell you from what part. Since I was last here, I changed what part of the civil service I'm working in, I'm now with An Garda Síochána (the Irish cops) and I spent two and half years working in Clonmel (about an hour's drive [technically fifty minutes, but lots of tractors and Sunday drivers] from home) and then got promoted and moved to Cork last November, where I now live.

Hi, all. I joined this forum a couple of years ago. I was prompted by the swelling tsunami of conspiracy theories, hoaxes, and pseudoscience, overwhelming my puny ability to fact check stuff. And I have folks wanting to "educate" me about various things - "sovereign citizen" movement, chemtrails, free energy, "ormus gold", vaccines causing autism, the "plandemic", yada yada.
Just trying to keep my head above water.

This is the first time when someone has joined the forum who I can blame for getting me in trouble in the past. Or was that Old Taylor? Or Old Overholt maybe. The 90’s were kind of a blur.

Welcome back Gulliver Foyle. I’ve been to Clonmel and Cork and could comfortably live in both places (anywhere in Ireland really) if I were to be exiled from Australia.

Stay out of Cork itself, the rent is terrible high. Had to go to Cobh to find decent digs, luckily I'm ten minutes walk from the train.
