New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, has recently re-imposed Corona restrictions. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the lockdown should be lifted at midnight local time. A three-day lockdown has been imposed in Auckland due to three new infections. Additionally, Ardern has ordered a nationwide commitment to wear mouth and nose protection.
Due to very strict measures and close contact tracking, New Zealand has weathered the epidemic quite well so far. In the South Pacific island nation of just under five million people, there were only 1,200 cases and 26 deaths.

This month, Sweden's regions have one week of so-called sports holidays, which many spend in the mountains skiing and partying:

A French point of view of the pandemic response in the Nordic countries:

Quote:
No face masks, #NoLockdown, no closure of restaurants or schools: the #Swedish government relied on the Swedes' self-discipline to battle the Covid-19 #pandemic. Most of them supported its decisions and working from home became the norm. But in the end, calls to be responsible and socially distance proved insufficient. Although Sweden's Covid-19 figures are no worse than the European average, the country has reported 10 times more deaths than its Scandinavian neighbours.

Tuesday, Oct. 13: 2,203

Tuesday, Dec. 15: 20,931 - deaths 153
Tuesday, Dec. 22: 22,319 - deaths 174
- - - - -
Tuesday, Dec. 29: 32,485 - deaths 205 NB. These numbers are since Wednesday 23, not Friday 25!!!
Tuesday, Jan. 5: 32,369 - deaths 258 NB. These numbers are since Wednesday Dec. 30, not Jan. 1.

Tuesday, Jan. 12: 17,395 - deaths 234

Tuesday, Jan. 26: 9,123 - deaths 242
Tuesday, Feb. 2: 9,649 - deaths 224
Tuesday, Feb. 9: 8,112 - deaths 73
Tuesday, Feb. 16: 9,458 - deaths 59
Tuesday, Feb. 23: 10,933 - deaths 64

The Swedish numbers are definitely rising again - probably due to a combination of B.117 and the February holidays. More schools are locked down due to outbreaks. Region Stockholm recommends face masks on public transport at all hours, at the job, in shops and at the hairdresser's. Anders Tegnell is still pretending that face masks don't work: Aftonbladet, Feb. 23, 2021 - 14:21 & 14:24. And he makes it obvious that face masks are still no part of the Swedish strategy when "he reminds about the recommendations to slow down the spread: staying at home when symptomatic, washing hands, working from home if possible, social distancing, seeing fewer people, getting tested when symptomatic and getting vaccinated." (Aftonbladet, Feb. 23, 2021 - 14:12)
So still no sign that he is aware of indoor aerosol transmission of the virus.

In week 6 (Feb. 8-14), 21,300 (9 percent more than the previous week) tested positive, out of 209,400 tests.

* Stockholm joined three other regions by urging people to wear face masks at all times while riding public transit and while indoors where crowding can occur.

Notice that it is still only recommendations, so it remains to be seen if Swedish commuters will be brave enough to defy the general anti-masking attitude in Sweden.

Zero Covid advocates in Sweden:

Quote:
29 företrädare för Vetenskapsforum covid-19: En nollvision med striktare åtgärder bör nu övervägas.
”Trots vaccinerna riskerar covid att öka försprånget” (DagensNyheter.se, Feb. 18, 2021)
29 representatives of the Science Forum Covid-19 (VetCov19): Now is the time to consider a zero vision with stricter measures.
”In spite of the vaccines, there is a risk that Covid will increase its lead”

Quote:
With a zero vision for the coronavirus, we can return to a more open society, the proponents of the strategy "zero covid" believe.
- It is entirely possible to suppress the infection so that it basically disappears, says Björn Olsen, professor of infectious diseases.
Olsen: It is entirely possible to suppress the infection so that it basically disappears

It doesn't come as a surprise that Anders Tegnell declares that Zero Covid is "impossible". And there is no doubt that he will do his utmost to make it impossible ...

Re the kids:

NEJM 2-18-21: Open Schools, Covid-19, and Child and Teacher Morbidity in Sweden
Quote:
We followed all children who were admitted to an ICU between March 1 and June 30, 2020 (school ended around June 10) with laboratory-verified or clinically verified Covid-19, including patients who were admitted for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C, which is likely to be related to Covid-19)4 according to the Swedish Pediatric Rheumatology Quality Register. ...

From March through June 2020, a total of 15 children with Covid-19 (including those with MIS-C) were admitted to an ICU (0.77 per 100,000 children in this age group) (Table 1), 4 of whom were 1 to 6 years of age (0.54 per 100,000) and 11 of whom were 7 to 16 years of age (0.90 per 100,000). Four of the children had an underlying chronic coexisting condition (cancer in 2, chronic kidney disease in 1, and hematologic disease in 1). No child with Covid-19 died.
You can make anything look really bad or not very bad depending on how you look at this.

Teachers:
Quote:
Data from the Public Health Agency of Sweden (published report5 and personal communication) showed that fewer than 10 preschool teachers and 20 schoolteachers in Sweden received intensive care for Covid-19 up until June 30, 2020 (20 per 103,596 schoolteachers, which is equal to 19 per 100,000). As compared with other occupations (excluding health care workers), this corresponded to sex- and age-adjusted relative risks of 1.10 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49 to 2.49) among preschool teachers and 0.43 (95% CI, 0.28 to 0.68) among schoolteachers
Science Mag Feb 15: Keeping schools open without masks or quarantines doubled Swedish teachers’ COVID-19 risk

Collateral damage.
Quote:
A careful analysis of health data from Sweden suggests keeping schools open with only minimal precautions in the spring roughly doubled teachers’ risk of being diagnosed with the pandemic coronavirus. Their partners faced a 29% higher risk of becoming infected than partners of teachers who shifted to teaching online. Parents of children in school were 17% more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19 than those whose children were in remote learning.

Ludvigsson is known for being one of the 47 initial signees of the Great Barrington Declaration.
Jonas F. Ludvigsson (Wikipedia)

Ludvigsson is also (in)famous for this study:
Quote:
“Case studies have indicated that children with COVID-19 seldom cause outbreaks, and we have seen (!!!) no major outbreaks among school children in Sweden, despite the fact that schools and kindergartens have remained open throughout the pandemic,” says Jonas F Ludvigsson.
Children unlikely to be the main drivers of the COVID-19 pandemic (Karolinska Institutet, May 20, 2020)
It is worth mentioning that Sweden hardly ever tested children during the first wave of the pandemic, so the country knew nothing about how major the outbreaks at schools were, which was fine by Ludvigsson because:
Quote:
“The virus is so widespread in society that responsible (!!!) people do not think it is a good idea to trace individuals. We only test symptomatic individuals. I agree with that,” he wrote in response to Science asking whether researchers were tracking school outbreaks.
How Sweden wasted a ‘rare opportunity’ to study coronavirus in schools (ScienceMag, May 22, 2020)

Since children are often asymptomatic, Sweden and Swedish researchers didn't do much TeTrIs on them - after all, Swedish authorities are "responsible people," aren't they?! - so they saw (!) "no major outbreaks among school children in Sweden."
And consequently, Sweden's health agency says open schools did not spur pandemic among children (Reuters, July 15, 2020).
Ludvigsson is free to believe that what you don't see can't hurt you, but the virus has still killed almost 13,000 Swedes.

Ludvigsson is a disgrace to research.

An article by the Swedish critics of the country's pandemic strategy has been published in the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten:
En vaksine kan ikke bekjempe pandemien alene (Aftenposten.no, Feb. 21, 2021)
A vaccine alone cannot defeat the pandemic

I think the jury is still out about whether the virus will indeed go away if a high proportion of people are vaccinated and minimal other measures are taken. I would not personally like to bet on it though.

We know where it has gone away - and where it went. Is there any reason to assume that Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Mongolia, Iceland etc. couldn't be done elsewhere? Or that the vaccines will make it easier to do?

The mutations and outbreaks at schools in Sweden:
Quote:
The British mutation is increasing rapidly and is about to take over in Sweden, according to Anders Tegnell.
The South African and Brazilian variants also appear in more places - including in Sörmland.
- We have five cases in a cluster infection at a school with younger children, says Signar Mäkitalo, infectious disease control doctor in the region.
(...)
Increase among children is a surprise
He has reacted to the fact that recently it has become more and more common for children to fall ill with covid-19. Nationally, the whole country has seen an increase in cases among children between 13 and 17 years of age. In Sörmland, there have been outbreaks in primary school all the way down to the youngest classes.
- After Christmas, I was a little surprised because there have been almost more children than adults who have been sick at schools.
Tegnell about the new mutations: One of them may soon take over - The doctor for infectious disease control is critical of the Public Health Agency: Reacts too late

It probably wouldn't have been such a surprise if Swedish researchers hadn't been busy trying to prove that children don't really spread the infection, and if they do so among themselves, they don't really come down with anything bad.
They have guys like Ludvigsson to thank for that!

PS I forgot a "not" in this sentence:

The B117 Brit mutation is swamping Finland, too. Of the new four hundred or cases, 123 are the B117, one is the South African and there is a tiny trace of Brazilian.

Bear in mind, these are only the people who have symptoms badly enough to ask for a test.

Doesn't Finland have contact tracing?! I.e. there must be reason to assume that some of people are getting tested because they are the contacts of people who tested positive.
