He fails to mention he didn't pay attention to emerging events/actions from other countries, failed to attend 5 COBRA meetings went on holiday for a significant time, declined to join EU scheme for sourcing PPE and wouldn't read briefings unless they were short enough to fit one one side of A4.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is on holiday in Spain. He will remain there for the duration of his holiday and will then have to self-isolate for 14 days when he gets back.

We have friends whose flight back from Ibiza was due to land at 0030 this morning. They will have to self-isolate for 14 days. If the flight was 31 minutes early they wouldn't have to. Crazy

AFAIK there's a break at most (all?) uk airports between 0100 and 0500. Put the starting time during that period so you don't have quite such an arbitrary cut off for a day's arrivals

They need to set a time, and it needs to apply to all arrivals, whether by plane, boat or train. The start of the day is the easiest to administer.

Is it ? Why is 0000 any easier than 0200 especially as scheduled arrivals by boat wouldn't be affected by either time and the vast majority of arrivals are by air.

Yes and no. For our developed societies, a more convenient divider between two dates would be 2am. Many arrangements run until past midnight, but few run past two 2am.

It's a reasonable point, though it could have been made clearer in the original post.

If the Canaries have little virus, why are they including the Canaries as well? It's not as if people are going to drive to Gran Canaria from Barcelona to avoid quarantine.

An easy decision to take, not least because they don't dock between 0000 and 0200.

Our friends intend to do so but other acquaintances who were required to on return from the US had no checks or follow up.

It's placing all the responsibility on the individuals, the government has effectively abdicated theirs.

Another set of friends got back from Mallorca at 2330 so they're free to go about their business unencumbered simply because their flight landed an hour earlier. .

Indeed. The chances of getting caught and fined are very slim indeed:

It's easier, objectively, because you only have to look at the date, not the date and time. Yes, functional.human beings should be able to cope with this level of granularity, but... well, watched the news recently?

A lot harder than a quick walk over the border to France! It's between 2 and a half hour and a half to 3 and half hour flight to Gran Canaria from the Spanish mainland.

Our work has said that if you booked a holiday that doesn't have quaratine in place when you book, but this changes while you are there, they will honour it with full pay. I can't see most people ignoring that.

However, there are sure to be places (eg. contractors) that might sack someone who suddenly has to do 2 weeks quaratine. This is where the issue starts.

For our developed societies, a more convenient divider between two dates would be 2am. Many arrangements run until past midnight, but few run past two 2am. ETA: I see I am ninjaed many times over. Forget about this post It's a reasonable point, though it could have been made clearer in the original post. If the Canaries have little virus, why are they including the Canaries as well? It's not as if people are going to drive to Gran Canaria from Barcelona to avoid quarantine.

Our friends intend to do so but other acquaintances who were required to on return from the US had no checks or follow up. It's placing all the responsibility on the individuals, the government has effectively abdicated theirs. Another set of friends got back from Mallorca at 2330 so they're free to go about their business unencumbered simply because their flight landed an hour earlier. .

So, in the first two weeks of quarantine, only 3 fines had been handed out in England & Wales.
