We have a wind advisory for the area today (northern state). 50 mph gusts expected. I expect to hear about a semi or two being blown over.

Steaming on at 8 knots, followed by a bunch of tugboats. Soon into Bitter Lake.

I just saw it mentioned in an article that an IKEA spokesman claimed this is the reason for delays in their stocking their stores. Sure, honey, the canal was so blocked it worked backwards in time, frustrating deliveries from 2020. If your supply chain involves time travel at all it means you should get everything exactly when it's wanted.

Sorry, I always struggle to make sense of random CT wingnuttery. Seems to be from Wiki on their page about the vessel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ever_Given

See the panel of quick facts to the right.

Some internet Q genius has connected the given call sign from that page, "H3RC", for the ship with Hillary Rodham Clinton and her USSS codename of "evergreen" from when she was first lady and concluded that the ship is smuggling those tasty babies in containers.

Sure, it is bonkers, but since when was it a rule that CTs had to make sense? The cheese slid off that cracker long ago. These days I just point and laugh.

At that speed I would guess there is no severe damage . . . unless they are racing to a point where it can sink out of the way of other traffic.

According to AIS, it's expected to arrive in Rotterdam on Wednesday morning.

We'll see if they will make it that far, or if they choose to stop at an other port (for repairs or something).

They've already declared the intent to stop the ship once it gets to the Great Bitter Lake and is out everyone's way. I imagine they'll do a fairly robust inspection at that point.

Sure, but after the war I believe you are thinking of it took eight years to get the canal open again.

They did much better this time.

Ever Given with tethered escort tugs fore and aft.
Other shipping lanes/harbors have required this type of towing on these mega-sized vessels in recent years , but not Suez. I bet they do now though!

In 2019:
The first vessel of max size (400m= Suezmax) in the new canal had photos of the transit 2 years ago. No tethers.

Could be they pumped thousands of tons of ballast out of her.

There will be some re trimming to do.

The contents of the containers will vary so the load across the ship will vary.
This happens with any solid cargo to an extent.

One of the jobs of the 1st mate is to ensure the ship remains trimmed as it is loaded or unloaded.

He will be doing some calculations and pumping for a while.

Damn, it just occurred to me: they could probably have sorted out this problem on Day 1.... simply by pouring several dozen tons of Ex-Lax into the Suez Canal.

Or maybe have two canals. Then if one gets blocked, the other is still useable. Each canal would normally allow ships to go one way only.

Big sections of it to the north of the Great Bitter Lake are doubled, one north and one southbound cut.

I bet they speed up the doubling of the remaining sections.

I wonder to what degree this will provoke a response from other large managed seaway/canals like the Panama and the St. Lawrence. Surely at least a few engineers are looking at diagrams going "Okay so what happens if that happens here" to at least some degree.

That would reduce the Canal's throughput. The overall loss would probably add up to orders of magnitude more than the occasional stoppage such as this.

It'd be nice to see a proper cost-benefit or risk analysis done. It's possible that the cost of this kind of event together with the likelihood of this kind of event, is less than the cost of doubling the rest of the canal. I'm sure the representatives of the world's shipping consortiums are meeting with representatives of the Canal's oversight board to discuss this sort of thing right now. The big question would be, who pays for it?

In theory the increased throughput would pay for itself over time, but it seems so far investors haven't been beating down the door trying to get in on the scheme.

Again a second "lane" to the Suez was already in the works, well before this happened. As others have noted I'd wager a "Okay let's hurry and get that finished" isn't something we have to run a trolley problem on.

Here's the thing. Not to undersell the complexity or difficulty but the Suez isn't the Panama or the Saint Lawrence. There's no lochs, no gates, no massive changes in elevation... it's just a big ditch in flat sand.

I have.

Navy Ships are always their hull numbers, never their names.

My last ship always intiated and answered hails as "CG-58" not "USS Philippine Sea."

Unless you're the Iranians in the Straights of Hormuz and it's always "UNIDENTIFIED AMERICAN WARSHIP!"

"*Sighs* It's us Iran. You know who we are. Same as when you challenged us yesterday, and the day before that, and day before that."
